“Great Value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2013

We travel to Nakuru several times a year for both business and holiday. I keep coming back here because of the great value. Although you will not find a great amount of luxury here, you will get a clean room, hot water shower, and a wonderful buffet breakfast for a very reasonable price. The down side is that the pillows are too thin, internet is slow, beds are so-so, and the tvs in the room only have local channels. Staff are very friendly fast to respond even if they cannot resolve your issue. Soap and towel provided (no washcloths or shampoo for my American friends). The restaurant has a tv with more channels. The food is good but the service is slow. New linens have been added recently too. Its much nicer. The guesthouse is only 5 minutes from the Lake Nakuru part entrance and they will give you a packed breakfast for free and a packed lunch for cheap to eat in the park. There are loud sides of the hotel and quieter sides. Try to get a room that faces the courtyard and not the security wall. If you are in the area for business or cheap holiday, this is the place.

Room Tip: There are loud sides of the hotel and quieter sides. Try to get a room that faces the courtyard and...

Stayed here overnight to visit Lake Nakuru National Park. Had heard that good budget lodging is difficult to find in Nakuru and settled on Jumuia from a recommendation. Rooms were clean and mosquito nets are large, which was important as there were many mosquitoes there! The sheets and bedding were clean and appeared fairly new, so they may have been updated since previous reviews. Road noise and animals fighting woke us up during the night, but as the hotel is slightly outside of town on Kanu Street, I think it was probably quieter than if we stayed closer to the clubs. Staff was very friendly. The hotel is located close to the national park. Overall it was an average stay, but compared to what I've heard about other Nakuru hotels, likely one of the better places.

I was concerned when I read the reviews about this hotel. The hotel was suggested to us by fellow missionaries so we took a chance. So glad it turned out well. The 8 of us stayed for about $50 more than a local guest house wanted for 2 of us!!!!!! We will stay here again in July with another mission team. A good deal for the price.

We had trouble finding a place in Nakuru that was affordable. Ended up booking three nights here, but left after two. Should have left after one. It is run by the church, our driver told us, "so there will be no drinking or smoking." (In-room welcome sheet told us we need to dress appropriately when going to the restaurant. Also listed several steps we should take in case of a fire before actually vacating the room.) We weren't concerned about drinking or smoking, but we did feel out of place. I guess there was a religious conference going on. We did not feel welcome. The room was not welcoming, either. Very gray and not cheery. Mold in the bathroom, battered mosquito netting, rough towels, paper-thin pillows. There was music blaring from a nearby club or some place until 4 in the morning our first night. On the second night, it just got started at 3 a.m. Most miserable sleeping experience ever.

Cons:
Really only the noise.
Jumuia is in a noisy part of town so would recommend ear plugs. We stayed when there was a conference on so the conference participants woke us up very early as they began at 6am and when they came to bed late at night. The room we had was by the kitchen and the pots and pans banging also woke us. With ear plugs the next night there were no issues.

Pros:
The rooms are small and basic but clean. Very close to the Nakuru National Park. Good security. Good price (45 USD per night per room non resident). I looked around the internet for a reasonably priced hotel in Nakuru. A lot of the hotels like so many in Kenya were above our budget so I would stay again if I had the earplugs if only for the price. It has nice garden settings and the staff were pleasant. Have rated at 4 stars as I was overall happy with what we paid for. I found it hard to find better in our budget range. There is often a gap in some Kenya towns for people self touring on a budget.

Room Tip: Ask for their quietest room, away from kitchen or road.

We had planned an overnight stay at the Jumuia Guesthouse in view of our visit to the Nakuru National Park on the following day. We had based our choice pretty much on the previous reviews on TripAdvisor.
Everything started out all right from the moment we arrived. The rooms were a little small, but considering the price, the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the buffet dinner, everything pointed towards us giving top marks. It was when we retired for the night that we had a first inkling of what was to come. Already at 9.00pm, the loud songs from a nearby Pentecostal Church of East Africa congregation were clearly audible among other evening sounds. Later at night, however, with fewer noises around, the songs became a real source of disturbance. By 4.00 and 5.00am, each new song, clearly amplified by loudspeakers placed outside the church - not inside - took on a distinctly criminal tinge. In short, a completely sleepless night.
On the following morning, the reception staff told us that the church had previously received complaints and lowered the volume as a result, but then things had got back to "normal", i.e. badly noisy for the neighbours. We were also told that this was only a Friday night service: that was of course small comfort to us, but this may be important information for other travellers.
For us, in sum, a totally ruined overnight stay.

We stayed here for a week, with no problems. It felt secure, with helpful and friendly staff. The rooms are small but adequate and clean. The food is good and plentiful. No dicky tummies in our group. Take a kettle or flask if you like drinks in your room. Hope to return later this year.
