This was our "luxury" two nights in Kenya with the rest of our two weeks spent either in basic but quirky lodgings or staying with friends. It styles itself as a 4 star hotel and I guess I had expectations which were too high. Superficially the Merica is a generic top end hotel. The rooms follow the design we all know from anywhere but it was all a little on the downside of what you might have hoped. The bathroom was basically clean but with grubby edges. The shower was scroching hot/icy cold. Rooms had neither ac nor fanns. The pool area is lovely and service there was really good. Food - the buffet breakfast and dinner got mixed reviews from our group. Some thought it was tasty (and they were right). I saw the negative which was that breakfast, even early, was cold.
Basically this, to me, was a hotel which looked like luxury but didn't feel like it once settled in. If I come back to Nakuru I think I'd either trade up or down. Up, if I could afford it to genunie luxury or down to somewhere with more personality and a bit of quirky fun.
Market across the road was fun but a bit intense - like all the salesmen and women had the hotel as their sole focus.More
