I'm a bit surprised by the low rating this hotel is getting. Okay, Iga Ueno is a small, historical city and I thought this hotel was perfect for this class of city. First, the rooms are dated, but nothing is broken. This is Japan, so everything is perfectly clean, beds were comfy and I got a perfectly warm shower. I personally loved the really old school radio that was built into the wall. It's location is just two blocks from Uenoshi metro station and a nice walk to the Iga Ueno Castle. The front desk spoke excellent english and even helped to point out an amazing restaurant. Free wifi and free coffee use of the coffee machine in the lobby. And did I mention, absolute value for money. I would definitely return.

We arrived at the hotel way earlier than the usual check in time of 3 pm but was allowed to check in and leave our bags in the room before we set out to explore the city. The room was simple and had a small fridge and an air conditioning unit that didn't work too well so we slept with the windows open to keep cool as it was a rather hot day. The food that they served for breakfast was nothing fancy but sufficient.

The front staff were very helpful with regards to providing information to the local area. The waiting staff in restaurant seemed less helpful.

The only complaint that the following day, all of us who had slept in different beds ended up with bed bug bites all over. At first it was suspected to be mosquito bites but after the bumps developed, it became clear as to the origin. Other people in other rooms seemed ok so we would assume that we were unlucky?

We were originally going to stay for one night at this hotel but had to rearrange our plans as we were travelling from Tokyo which meant by the time we arrived in the Iga, it would be very late in the night. Originally booked for one night, I had to email the hotel for an extended stay. I received great communication through email from Hirokazu Sakamoto and arranged the extra night.

We arrived in Iga Ueno late in the night, the hotel was very central and close to the train station. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a gentleman at the reception that spoke brilliant English. He was very helpful and gave us maps of the area for the main tourist sights. He also photocopied an English version for us too and advised us where the nearest 24 hours convenient store was. I regret not taking this gentleman’s name.

Room was a typical business hotel but good size, very clean and comfortable. We were only staying for two nights and the hotel was perfect for us. Bathroom was very clean with powerful showers. The bed itself was little harder than the usual, nothing too uncomfortable.

When we went to the convenience store to buy Cupnoodles, a member of the staff was very helpful and kind where she offered to put hot water in for us and also helped us put food in the microwave whilst we sat down on the comfortable seats at the lobby. The microwave and coffee machine were a mere 4 metres from the seating area but staff member insisted on this brilliant service.

Very happy with this hotel, great location to the main attractions and most of all, excellent service.

Room tip: Iga Ueno is a very cute and small but due to this, there are loud train noises in the morning. Not something you can escape from regardless of where you stay in that town. By 10pm, a lullaby is played in public speakers as a goodnight gesture to the residents of the town, this is not played by the hotel. It generally is their ‘town’ thing.

This hotel is right in the middle of the town and is the perfect location for the Iga Ninja Festa. Of all the larger western-style hotels in Iga, I believe this is the most central one. They allow check in at noon and check out at noon, which was great as we arrived at lunchtime on a Saturday and could enjoy the ninja activities immediately, and could enjoy some activities on the last day too. Iga is a lovely old town, with strikingly gorgeous old houses and temples on every street, but small enough to wander around on foot and get pleasantly lost.

We booked two twin rooms (for a family of 2 adults and 2 children) and they thoughtfully gave us neighbouring rooms. We asked for non-feather bedding (due to allergies) in advance, and although they initially said they didn't have any, they kindly found some from another branch of the hotel. Rooms were quite large and although a little dated, they were perfectly functional and clean. Breakfast was included in the price and was a decent portion in the waiter-serviced restaurant on the ground floor - a bit of luxury savoured by the tired parents. (We also ate dinner here twice and recommend it highly. As we had potentially noisy children, it was lovely to have spacious tables slightly separated from each other, the kids selection was great (3 grades of kids' set meals) and the special menu of 1200 yen for staying guests only was very reasonable indeed). We booked about 3 months in advance and stayed for less than 10,000 yen per room per night inc breakfast, which was great value. Highly recommended.

A standard Japanese business hotel, with the usual facilities and comfort level. Compared to other business hotels we've stayed in at the Ueno City Hotel the room was somewhat bigger, and there was wifi in the room.

Location is ok, not to far from the castle and other attractions, and main shopping and restaurants.
There is also quite a good restaurant in the hotel, although not the most atmospheric and quite pricey.

Not a bad place, although we found the rates a bit higher (approx 120 EUR/room) than most Japanese business hotels (approx 80 EUR/room)
