This basic but pleasant guest house is on the Magome to Tsumago trail. Its possible to get here by JR bus from Tokyo but the drop off on the highway is probably a 30 minute walk uphill. Note: its impossible to find in the dark so arrive during the day light if you plan to walk. It is possible to take a connecting bus, but they are not very frequent and only run till about 1800.
The guest house has about 12 traditional guestrooms, The guests share the washing facilities. There are 12 toilets - 6 for men and 6 for women but only 1 bathroom for each.
Now I mention these facilities because if like me you want a quick shower and the guest house is full you can wait a long time for the bathroom. The traditional open plan bathroom has 3 showers and a hot tub and if a family is in there you can wait at least 45 minutes before it becomes free. On one night I waited over 2 hours walking back and forth to see if it was available, in the end I sat outside and waited.
The rooms have heaters and air-conditioning, television and you make up your futon yourself. Sheets show sign of wear and towels are available for a charge. There are two computers for guests to use, and green tea and instant coffee for guests to make when they want. There is also a kitchen where it would be possible to cook.
Food is served at 6 and there is a bell to tell you its time to go across the path to eat. The food is excellent so do eat here, presentation of the food is amazing and everyone got out their cameras to take pictures.
The staff, who speak English, are incredibly nice and very helpful when you have a problem. I would certainly stay here again, though I would try and get into bathroom before the 8-10 rush.
