“great place to stay”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

Have been staying at this motel since 1967! An absolutely gorgeous setting with a large window facing the bay, island, and lake. An older motel that's been appropriately upgraded without overdoing it. Clean and comfortable. I had a great night's sleep. A good value in this part of the country.
Restaurant was closed when I arrived, but owner personally brought sandwiches and soup to my room. Outside the room was a picnic table, so supper was outdoors overlooking the lake.
Suggest asking for a room in the older section. That way you have a picnic table just at your doorstep. The only drawback to these older rooms is that they don't have a fridge.

Room Tip: Suggest asking for a room in the older section.

July 2013. Beautiful property, well maintained with expansive grounds. Travelled with a dog and this was extremely dog friendly. By luck, I arrived about 3pm so had time to enjoy and relax. Price for the stay was excellent, especially when you factor in the grounds. I had dinner. Yes, the menu is pricey, however I had a tremendous steak for dinner and enjoyed it after a few days of burgers and road trip junk. Owners were extremely friendly and called me by name upon check in. I felt welcomed and valued. Beds are amazing and I could have spent a few days there relaxing. TV channels can be fuzzy, but saw this as an excuse to go for a walk. Highly recommended and I would stay again. Just be aware that the menu is not a "value menu" and a family dinner will cost you. Not sure why there is negative feedback given, but to each there own!

Room Tip: Second complex (starting at 17) has front door overlooking lake. Third complex more remote. First...

Ever since the 1970's, this motel in its stunning location overlooking Lake Huron has been one of our favorite places to stop for the night. The view out the window is breathtaking, the well-maintained surroundings peaceful and quiet. We'll be back...

We stayed for one night and booked 3 rooms. Rooms were very reasonable, clean and the beds were extremely comfortable! Everything worked well; the owners were very pleasant to talk to. Views from our room of Lake Huron were beautiful!!!! Due to other plans, we didn't eat there, but have heard the food is great, although maybe a little higher price than what we would usually spend. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: All have a beautiful view!

I love Carolyn Beach Motor Inn and Restaurant. Why? There are so many reasons; I’m going to have to list them.

1. The beach. The motel and restaurant are on the shore of Lake Huron. You can see the lake from the restaurant, your room, the Muskoka chairs, and from the little path that leads to a point.

2. Thessalon. You can walk from Carolyn Beach to Thessalon, along the lakeside to a very charming town. A river (more like a stream) runs through it. The houses are varied, and affordable.

3. The rooms. These rooms are clean and completely refurbished. The furnishings are not standard issue motel, and there is original artwork by the Native Group of Seven on the wall.

4. The owners-24/7 hosts. Susan and Andrew Weigel are charming, smart, hard-working, and positive. You will never hear them complain – they love what they do. And they love meeting new people and hearing their stories. When they take time off (which isn’t often) they trek around other countries and learn even more about the food and lodging profession.

5. The food. Fresh ingredients, made while you wait. And you won’t mind the wait because of the beautiful scenery. You can order from the menu or ask the chef (Susan) to make you something completely different. It’s licensed too.

6. The staff. Andrew and Susan make a point of hiring people who want to learn and do their very best. So you don’t have disinterested servers; you have folks who are genuinely wanting to be restaurateurs.

7. The gift shop. You need never worry about buying something unique for your family and friends. There are original artworks, regional books, Carolyn Beach memorabilia, etc.

*****

Is there anything I don’t like? There is nothing I don’t like, but some folks might balk at the prices. The rooms and food aren’t cheap. I’m fine with this because I have an understanding about how much work it is to run a small business that is high quality.

This resort is not for folks who want fast and cheap and impersonal – they would be best to go to a chain in the Soo. Carolyn Beach – in my opinion – is for folks who want to de-stress, rest in a beautiful room, enjoy good food, and enjoy nature.

OK, there is one thing I don’t like – it’s two hours away. If it was closer, I would BEG them to hire me. I love to be on the receiving end of excellent service – but I envy those to get to provide it.

/ jan :)

y husband and I stayed over many times and in 2002 stayed twice as my husband's mother was in the Algoma Manor and we would visit. When she passed away we booked 4 rooms for the funeral. ( The only game in town) The owner said "well so now that your mother died I guess you won't be coming back" Strange Public Relations. The food was overpriced and the owner was just down right obnoxious. We have a trailer in the area and know most of the locals and they won't go there and frankly they aren't welcome. I think the worst story is the "cancer bus" incident. There is a bus that goes between Sault and Sudbury. The bus stopped there and one of the patients wanted to use the washroom and they were denied. Smile every time I see the empty parking lot.
Lovely view, but not worth the trouble.

I think the tale of the tape in the reviews capture this place perfectly. The food here is unbelievably overpriced, staggeringly so. Examples include the below mentioned $14 pancakes without real maple syrup, Breakfast that is easily going to cost you $15, or burgers that will cost you $18. None of these items are unique or special in any way. There is no custom Bernaise they add, or some neat seasonal twist in the pancake. This is just a solid basic family style menu. So you are not getting anything particularly special for that extra expense. To give you an idea Micheline 2 star restaurants in NYC have lunch specials where they charge $20 for a burger and they have things like Truffles and dry aged beef in them.

The good news is that if you remove any concept of money, they deliver a pretty solid product. Again nothing special, but each dish is prepared with consideration and all of the items are prepared very well. The fish tastes fresh and not over battered, the eggs always seem to be cooked just right, and the burgers are nice and juicy with good char on the outside. So you are least getting something for your money.

We have also stayed here as well and the theme is almost exactly the same. You are paying $120 for a room that is about half of that in fittings, size and space. Yet, everything works, they are very efficient if something goes wrong.

This is what makes it so maddening about the place. If they met me halfway and charged me 150% more than the going rates, I would struggle paying but in the end acknowledge a case to be made for quality. It is the fact that they charge 200% more but only give you 25% more that I just never can get my head around.

These guys clearly rely on one time impulse travelers and if you have no price sensitivity and need a good meal, feel free to stop in. I for one can never let go of how much I just spent, it is just that insanely overpriced. It leaves you with such a bad feeling, that it takes aways from what could have been a great meal.
