If you have only a day or afternoon in Lanciano, this is the place to eat. It is located adjacent to the Medieval square and church: historic old center. Perfect to stroll after a fine meal.

The cuisine is meticulously handpicked. Andrea, the always smiling owner, personally ventures off into the mountains and discovers shepards who hand make cheese the old fashioned way. He buys only local and seasonal food. He, along with Carla the chef, prepare dishes as their grandmothers taught them. This is traditional Abruzzese cuisine at its very root: a peasant dish made for workers and farmers. The results are surprising. I tasted the "pallotte cacio e ovo" (meatballs of sheep cheese and egg) and I wanted the shed a tear. Like the famous madeleines of Proust, I tasted these meatballs and remembered my grandmother and all the love she put into food.
One can start with a platter of local cheeses and cured dried meats (it's a lot) and then taste little pasta dishes. I recommend the local biodynamic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo "Il Malandrino". If you like hearty reds then this is for you.

Every time I'm in town I make it a habit; it's one of my great pleasures to dine here.

Nice atmosphere right in the city center. Good choice of local cheese and prosciutto. The sheep steak was absolutely delicious. Arrosticini were average.

If you want to have a decent, freshly cooked meal and not pay over the top then this is the place for you. They managed to transform the old style trattoria into a more friendly and inviting looking place. The place is simply decorated wth beech wooden tables and some stools. Strongly advise the vegetarian starter, but don't be folded by it, if you're not a big water, get one to share or simply don't order anything else. The starter is enough to send you home satisfied. But then, if you're a big eater (like me!) order the cheese platter with Many kinds of cheeses served with freshly cut pears, apples and some honey to enhance the taste! It's a place I would definitely go back to if I visit lanciano again.
