“Listen to the ocean”
Reviewed April 25, 2012

We have just spent 4 nights at the Arniston Hotel - we love the peace, quiet and tranquility of a midweek visit there. This was our 4th time we have stayed at the Arniston Hotel.

Coming from the city it is divine to only hear the ocean and to recharge one's batteries. We always stay in room 101, "The Birkenhead" - a spacious sea facing luxury room with a fireplace and balcony with magnificent views.

There are no entertainment in Arniston, not even streetlights and you have have to entertain yourself.

The Gingko Spa at the Hotel offers top class treatments, currently they have a Monday special half price on all massages. We enjoyed a couples massage and two other massages while staying at the Arniston Hotel.

The Breakfast buffet offers a good selection to start off your day we enjoyed the home-made muesli.

Overall the food is very good and the wine very reasonably priced, for lunch the hotel offers a lighter and snack menu and at night an A-la Carte Menu you have a choice to dine in the formal dining room or at the Ladies Bar which is cozy with a fireplace and you have a choice to sit outside weather permitting.

Thank you to Mien & Riaan and the team for an excellent stay, we always enjoy our stay at the Arniston Hotel.

Room Tip: second floor luxury sea facing room, room 101 corner room very private

The hotel is the only one in Arniston. Facing the sea, with the wind blowing into the front as we arrived. The owner was at the front desk and was awfully informative, giving us advice on everything. We all had sea view rooms, all were clean and comfortable. There is a lovely restaurant, serving fresh fare, the staff, like everywhere in SA were so friendly and helpful. It seemed to be a popular destination for cyclists , I have no idea why. So hot and with so many hills!
Great place to explore the coastline. The southern most point of Africa is nearby where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.

Room Tip: Most rooms face the sea, which really is the place to be.

We stayed here on the recommendation of South African friends and would wholeheartedly pass on the recommendation. This was in mid-April, which is not their busiest time, so we were able to get three nights for the price of two. We had a second-floor room with a stunning view out to sea; all the rooms were named after ships which had foundered in the vicinity – the village of Arniston itself is named after a British ship that foundered on rocks near the hotel in 1815 with the loss of 372 lives, the worst loss of life in any shipwreck before the Titanic.
The room was spotless and comfortable, the service unobtrusive and hard to fault; beds were turned down by an unseen hand in the evening and chocolates left on the pillows. Dinner in the main restaurant was excellent; we are there on two nights, and on the third we went to the bistro/bar, which was perfectly good. They have a spa, apparently; we didn't go into it.
Arniston is a fairly isolated spot and there are no other facilities in the village, so you'd not go there looking for an active time. The small town of Bredasdorp is about 20 miles away, and there's not much excitement there, either. But it's a beautiful coastline with amazing white dunes, nature reserves, animals roaming free – we saw baboons, ostriches and much unidentified fauna.
I suspect we might not have loved the hotel so much had we not had a sea-facing room; as it was, it made an indelible impression.

Room Tip: Worth holding out for a sea-facing room

I had seen the image on the hotel's website, but wasn't prepared for the stunning view that opened up when driving around the last bend arriving at the Arniston. Its just such a great location, right next to the old fisherman's village and on a cliff above the beach. Fortunately many rooms are facing the sea and the sea is what you want to see from your room. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The food is great and one can choose between a more casual bistro and the fine dining restaurant. The pool is big enough to do some good swimming in case the sea is to wild.

Room Tip: Try to get a sea facing room.

The first thing to check is whether you want to stay in Arniton: it's a village by the sea quite a long way from anywhere else - assuming you do this is the only hotel in town - and even if you don't stay here chances are you'll eat here and have drinks in the bar. Great for families - especially with pre teen children as its so safe and easy. The whole place is quiet at night so avoid if you want nightlife! Teens might find it dull.

The prices are reasonable and breakfast particularly good. The setting is stunning but the only activity is walking or swimming so come when the weather is good. The sea is warm and sharks don't lie it because it's shallow and sandy.

It's lovely - very comfortable with good relaxed service. The pool is small but beaches in front of hotel. The spa is very good - more sophisticated than you might expect. As indicated by other reviewers no air con - not a problem in April but might be too hot in summer.

I liked the complementary water in the fridge - and fresh milk instead of packets of UHT even quite smart places seem to think are acceptable.

Wifi exists but very low bandwidth so good for emails but not much else.

I would definitely go again.

Room Tip: Ideally sea facing (east so sun rises over the sea) - and second floor best whichever way I think. T...

The hotel was smelly dirty over priced and the food just made average .
In short the worst night ever.
For two hundred pounds a night you would expect at the very least air con, and wifi that worked.
Do yourselves a favor avoid at all costs.

Lovely hotel but it should be noted that in a very quiet location! Pretty coastal village. Stopped here for an overnight stay on the way to Mossel Bay however wasn't really on the way / garden route, we did have to do a bit of a detour! Modern, quality rooms with a personal touch however only fans in the rooms not air con. Limited free wi-fi Good food in hotel restaurant
