The Riding Fool Hostel
Reviewed September 13, 2012

We were warmly welcomed by Caitlin, the new employee from Australia and she was very accommodating in showing us around. We are in our 60's and had a private room. The room was clean and comfortable and we had a great sleep. There were only 4 other guests so basically we had our own bathroom and it was very clean - sink, toilet and bathtub/shower. We rented towels for $2.00 each.
The kitchen was large and well equipped with dishes and utensils. The common room was very large with lots of seating and a pool table, a great place to meet and chat with other travelers.
This hostel reminds us of hostels in Australia and New Zealand and we heartily recommend it.

Room Tip: Although it was quiet for our stay, I can see why others say a room away from the common room might...

My husband and I (both in our 50's) stayed here for a few nights in July 2012 and really loved it. The folks who checked us in we're sweet and helpful. The place is huge, the kitchen well stocked, there is even a pool table. We were able to rent a private room and were very comfortable. It is a tiny town but has some nice shops and a couple places to eat. If you are into mountain biking, this is a great place to stay as there is world class mountain biking from the door step, seriously. Great place!

We had been camping for 2 weeks on Vancouver island and came here for a bit of comparative luxury. Really fantastic hostel, excellent value for a private room. Super clean, great facilities, very friendly service and lots of character. Cumberland itself is a real gem of place too. We would definitely stay again if in the area.

We had a group of 30 mountain bikers, who have been doing our June Ride for over 20 yrs.
I only wish we could take this place with us wherever we go! Tons of room, very large kitchen &
recreation area, good people to deal with. Ride right from the hostel, fantastic!

The staff at Riding Fool were over accommodating to the extraordinary needs and demands of our annual Joon Ride group of 30 mountain bikers. The lodging, culinary facilities, great common room and location to trail heads, entertainment, food, and drink were awesome.

Room Tip: rooms on the opposite end of the building from the common room are quieter.

This heritage building is in downtown Cumberland. The two hotels in town are nearby and play loud live music until late on Saturday nights. The common area is right next to the sleeping area so if your fellow hostel visitors like to stay up late and socialize and you are a light sleeper then you're out of luck. I didn't see any Quiet Hours posted.

Bathrooms were clean, each one having basin, toilet and combo bath/shower. The kitchen is large and good.

You need to arrive before 10pm when the front door is locked.

Room Tip: Private rooms are next to common area and are noisy. Take good ear plugs.

We stayed in the riding fool in off season, at the end of September 2011 for 4 nights. we turned out to be the only ones there, but that didn't make too much difference as the staff were lovely, the couple who own the shop downstairs great to chat to and the place itself comfortable and cosy. The bike trails from Cumberland are good for moderate to advanced mountain bikers (like most of BC!). It was raining almost the whole time we were there, but still found plenty to do, checking out the local museum even was an unexpected treasure. Highly recommend staying here.
