We stayed at the Coloso for 10 nights, in Cabin 1, and had the best of times.

The cabins are clean and include several fans. There is no AC, but the place is very windy during the evening, which offers natural freshness. The cleaning lady, Martha, was very nice and discrete and changed the linen and towels almost every day.

There is a coffee machine available in the room with free coffee and sugar (nice touch). Another nice addition are the multiple shelves available to organize your stuff, which is particularly useful during longer stays.

The site itself is well manicured and offers direct access to the beach. Also, they built a large hut beside the beach with several hamacs. We read for hours under the shade while enjoying the fresh ocean breeze. An amazing spot to unwind and forget the worries of the world!

Every cabin has a foot shower.

The beach itself is probably the wildest one my wife and I saw in our life. The surf can be challenging at hide tide since it carries many branches and coconuts with it. Low tide is much quieter and perfect for a gentle and refreshing swim. Since the sand is black, the water becomes very warm. Lovely!

This is a strong point of the Colosal's location, in our opinion, because it offers a wilder and quieter environnement, just a couple of minutes south of the village. Here, it's only you, the beach and life unfolding slowly before your eyes.

We taught about renting some bikes on site, but we spent our entire stay walking to the village instead. The walk along the beach is lovely and you can stop along the way at the Sol y Mar Hotel to have a drink at their bar. The walk to Zancudo Point is about 2 hours (one-way), but it offers amazing views and the best swimming spot in town. You can also go to the point with bikes (on the beach).

Note that Colosal offers bike and surfing equipment rentals for a reasonable price.

Zancudo is a quiet town and, even in high season, you will see almost no one on the beach for miles. If you are fed up of tourists hords with their Nikon cameras around their neck and there Indiana Jones looks, then Zancudo is the place for you. As our travel book noted: "It should be full of tourists, but it's not".

The town has two supermarkets. Avoid the Bella Vista supermarket which is dirty and is known around town for offering horrible service. Instead, go at the El Buen Precio supermarket - a little bit south - and meet Jonathan and Filemon who are very helpful and friendly. Regardless of the place you shop, be prepared to pay outrageous prices for sunscreen and note that most of the bottles have long reached their expiry date (try to haggle the prices down - it worked for us).

You can get to Zancudo from Golfito using public buses, but be aware that you have to stop in Conte and take another bus that will drop you in Langostino, 5km south of Zanduco. Then, you have to manage to find a ride in town, which may be challenging. A daily bus will drop you in Zancudo around 4PM.

Your best option, and a very fun one, is to take the public ferry boat which leaves the Golfito municipal port at around 12PM. Call Port Fishing Zancudo at +50686387712. Ask for Eric. You can also WhatsApp them and they will answer in no time. The ride is a surprisingly cheap 3000 colones and it offers some of the best coastal views we had during our 1 month trip around the country. Note that these guys also leave the Zancudo port at 7AM to Golfito, from Monday to Friday. The morning ferry heading towards Golfito, at high tide, offers one the most amazing spectacles we've seen. You feel like you are speedboating through the Amazon forest and will be able to see some beautiful and untouched wildlife. It was like being in a dream. You're in for a treat friends.

Moreover, the Coloso owns a restaurant on site that has a very good reputation in town. The food is fresh and good and we had dinner there 6 nights out of 10. They have a bar and many locals and other off-site travelers come and eat there. It often happens that tables are reserved and the restaurant is almost full. The staff is generally friendly and professional. Be prepared to pay around 8 000 colones (15-20 CDN$) per person for a dish and a drink. The chef, Edwin, also prepares breakfast in the morning, which was included and lovely.

The owner, John, a very nice guy from upstate New York, is very attentive to his customers needs and a great guy. Ask him anything and he will gladly help you out. He his very professional and friendly. We can easily say that our stay was much better because of his kindness. Kudos to you John on 15 years doing business in Zancudo!

All in all, the site is very safe with several security cameras on site.

The only thing that needs to be improved is the wi-fi service in the rooms. It kept disconnecting and was unusable most of the time. However, the wi-fi in the restaurant works fine and is accessible 24/7.

The Coloso Del Mar is the closer you will get to paradise for such a reasonable price.

The drive to Zancudo was a lot better then a few years ago. A lot more of the road has been paved and new signage. Coloso Del Mar was easy to find and was welcomed by John Charles the owner. We were a little early for check in but John Charles got us to our room within minutes. Our cabin had a nice view towards the beach and the over all property is very clean and refreshing. The cabins are rustic but very clean and comfortable. There is no a/c in our cabin but it was not needed due to the end of the winter rainey season. Breakfast and dinner on location was excellent. That's when the snow bird gringo's came out of the wood work and they were regulars. John Charles knew them all and had their drink orders memorized. Very surprising to see a snow bird community in an out of the way place like Zancudo.

Room tip: No bad room. Walls are a little thin but not bad.

Definitely an amazing place to stay in Zancudo. Cabinas are big, confortable, really clean, with hot powerful shower. We stayed there for three nights and this is the best place we've been in CR so far. The restaurant is perfect, nice food and affordable prices (even for backpackers). We can not enough recommend this place for a short or long stay, just to relax in front of the sea and enjoy the sound of the waves. Staff is very welcoming and charming. If you're looking for a quiet, beautiful, clean place with reasonable prices you should choose el Coloso!

This was my second time at Coloso, and still beautiful as my first time! It's located in one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, Playa Zancudo.

Rooms are clean and have a really nice space. Really good food and drinks. JC the owner is a very good host.

Great location, the staff is very friendly, the beach is mere steps from your cabia. There's a great elevated platform to overlook the ocean and/or take a nice nap in a shaded hammock. Also, they have the best breakfast (crepes) on the playa, and a number of great fish recipes available for dinner in a cozy screened in porch.
