I have just returned from my stay in Turtle Bay. I was there for 8 nights and was looked after incredibly well. I was very impressed with the large spacious rooms with balconys overlooking the very quiet beautiful beach. The only noise being the waves which were incredibly soothing as I drifted off to sleep. The food was exceptional- every vegetable under the sun, fresh fish and a huge variety of fruit. Each night was different. All members of staff were extremely friendly and helpful and no request was too big or small. I received some fantastic treatments during my stay and left feeling very rejuvenated. The whole place has a great atmosphere. I would definitely recommend staying here.

We stayed in the hotel for 4 nights over my partners birthday. We found the surroundings very beautiful. The hotel did a special birthday dinner with a cake which was super. The staff were really friendly, attentive and helpful. Would recommend this hotel.

When my husband and I were looking for a place to stay in Tangalle, we chose Turtle Bay based on the many excellent reviews it received from other travellers on TripAdvisor. We were travelling around Sri Lanka with our own driver and vehicle, and had specifically asked boutique hotels like Turtle Bay if they provided driver accomodation. We were assured our driver would be taken care of, and his meals provided. On our arrival, we were told our driver would have to stay at another property but that his meals would be provided. We were taken to our room, which was pleasant with a large welcome fruit basket. We had a private balcony which was great except that the deck chairs (caked in bird droppings) had not been cleaned and didn't lend themselves to relaxing in the sun. When we enquired about the nearby bird sanctuary (open to the general public), the hotel staff told us we couldn't take our own vehicle but instead, had to pay to be taken there by a 3-wheeler. Dinner time was a perfect example of this hotel's standard of customer service. We had paid full-board, but the on-duty manager was adamant that we would have to pay for dinner. We ordered pre-dinner drinks whilst they were sorting this out, but had to wait for 15mins for them to be served. We did note in the meantime that the staff were happily serving other guests drinks that were far more complicated than a scotch with soda and a lime juice. The food itself was not great, and there wasn't much in the way of variety. Whilst at dinner, we overheard the waiters asking other guests what they wanted for breakfast the next morning (English vs Sri Lankan). We were never asked or given a choice. When we arrived at breakfast, we were told we were having an omelette. At breakfast, the manager asked where we were going next and did his level best to put us off our next hotel (which incidentally, was awesome), telling us we should stay another night as "its next to the cement factory". However, the icing on the cake came when we left the hotel - we discovered that our driver had not been looked after despite us paying for his accomodation and food.

Turtle Bay is not a great place to stay if you happen to be Sri Lankan. The service was appalling, and the implied attitude of the staff was that you don't have money to spend if you are not Caucasian (which is antiquated and ridiculous). The on-site manager was abhorrent and his petty attempts to belittle other hotels in order to make TB look great were thinly veiled. My husband and I have grown up in the West, and are proud of our Sri Lankan heritage. However, we never expected such racially biased treatment from a hotel with a brilliant TripAdvisor rating. Will never be coming back here again.

Dear Guest,

I am truly saddened that you could not experience the comfort at turtle bay owing to the bad experience at the Restaurant.

Please accept my apology for the inconvenience caused to you as we have clearly failed in our service. We should have been more responsible and extended our service more closely as you were visiting your motherland as someone who is special to us and also to srilanka.
While accepting that Turtle Bay is not perfect but we are not racially biased as you claimed, We have had many srilankan Guest, have visited us many times with proven service records. We regret that the caption of your review is largely unjustified and really not deserved to be classified as being claimed by you. .

On reflection of your booking ,it has been made via booking.com for one night on Half Board basis and not on Full Board as claimed. further there was no any prior correspondence regarding the drivers accommodation as it was an on line booking. We do not provide drivers accommodation on site .also the pathway to the bird sanctuary is so narrow and perhaps the kalametiya is the only bird sanctuary which is accessible by boats in srilanka.
We are really sorry that Turtle bay fell short of your expectation ,please write to me directly on sujeewa@turtle bay.lk as we are willing to offer you 3 nights on complimentary basis .surely an another visit ,we will be able to create better memories for you at turtle bay.

Yours sincerely

Sujeewa

Turtle Bay located on the most amazing beach, totally unspoilt, the views are stunning. The hotel is beautiful and the staff made us feel so welcome, we were even served our own family dinner in the beach cabana and worked hard to accommodate our 4 children's needs. I loved the idea that the hotel embraces the local area and we had a wonderful fishing trip on the lagoon, a village tour and a most memorable night at the turtle sanctuary. I would love to return to Turtle Bay.

Everything about our visit was just what we were looking for, but we got a little restless with little to do in the area. The hotel itself is superb, with the best service, friendly staff and great food. We felt like the king and queen of Turtle Bay. But the restlessness in us needed to move on sooner than expected because we soon realized how much else we wanted to see without spending all our money on transportation.

The rooms and scenery were perfection. The nearby bird sanctuary was incredible. The beaches are perfect for walking, not for swimming. The only issue we had was that the shower was not quite warming up easily. But the weather was such that it didn't bother us. We did catch a 16lb sear fish that the chef cooked for us beautifully... and then fed the village, so to speak.

Highly recommend for a few days for couples. Families might have more fun, the pool was great for family fun.

Room Tip: Corner suites have the best view.
