“very average - far away...”
Reviewed November 23, 2012

You get roughly what you pay for... Alexis hotel is located some 45-50 mins walk away from the
Chania harbour, at least if you take the more bearable route along the beach avoiding the busy main road, which has no pavements most of the way. The room was very basic and the same goes for the breakfast, which was exactly the same every single morning over the whole week we stayed. We tried the restaurant only once, since even if the food was nice, we both suffered some serious stomach problems the next morning. When it comes to service at the front desk, it is a bit hard to comment, since most of the time you could find no one there, For instance, we had a hard time getting a taxi to the airport, as staff had disappeared once again. To sum it up, you can certainly find better deals for the money and we cannot really recommend the place.

Hello there! Thank you for taking the time to review Alexis hotel.
The average time to walk to the city center is 20 minutes. There is also a pleasant route along the beach to the old harbour which may take a bit more time, but is well worth the effort! I look forward to receiving any recommendations you may have for our breakfast offerings. I truly enjoyed spending time with you both at the restaurant, over a bit of our homemade Raki; next time i'll bring out the even stronger batch! Sorry you had troubles finding us, but do keep in mind, our reception hours are limited.

The Owners were exceptionable friendly and helpful as we were travelling in November it was right at the end of the season so the fact that we were one of few guests at the time may have influenced this, however having examined other reviews I believe this always to be the case.

I cannot speak to highly of the hotel restaurant from which we received great food and brilliant service for a good price. Having ventured out on a couple of nights to the heart of the 'old town' we completely failed to find anywhere with such good quality food, such a varied menu for even twice the prise. On the last night we chose to eat in.

Location-wise the hotel is positioned at the top of a hill with a view out to sea and across Chania, There are two good beaches easily within walking distance and remarkably the sea was around 22 degrees, even at the start of November,

Theo, the owner and chef was remarkably friendly and welcoming, also an amazing source of knowledge on where to visit and was very useful in helping us sort out our days in Crete when we requested help. The range, quality and prices for food in Theo's restaurant was consistently better than in the restaurants we visited in the new and old harbour areas of Chania.

Arrived late in the evening and found the hotel very easily. Check-in with Theo (owner/chef) was very informative and welcoming. After taking my bag to the room I went downstairs to Theo's restaurant where I had a fantastic meal. The woman behind the bar(also the waitress) was friendly and mixed a mean Pina Colada. The room was basic (had only paid Euros24 so was not expecting The Ritz) but clean with comfortable beds. The balcony looked out over the bay - a welcome sight the following morning. Only stayed for one night as I was meeting up with friends and staying further along the coast in Rethymnon.
Theo is a very friendly and trusting guy. I had planned to settle my bill by c/c but he had no facility for this. He was happy for me to stay the night and go to an ATM for cash in the morning after breakfast.
Happy to recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the northwest of Crete.

In this hotel, you feel truly welcome. The owners (with perfect American English) endeavour to fulfil all your wishes and, beyond that, really seem to care about you.

The hotel is located in a suburb a mile or so outside the Old Town of Chania, on a very steep hill; but if you are in good shape, you can easily reach it on foot. From the restaurant, which also serves as breakfast room, you look down onto the dunes. When you cross them (for which, again, you need to be fit), you arrive directly at a marvellous sandy and shallow beach, not developed and therefore less busy than those up town.

The soft golden sand, the bright orange earth, the craggy dark rocks, the green dots of bristly vegetation and the deep blue expanse of sea and sky create an impression you will never forget.

The rooms at Hotel Alexis are plain, but pleasant and well-kept. The breakfast buffet includes beautiful local products, such as feta cheese, honey, creamy yoghurt, and orange or melon slices. However, since the bread is strangely stale - like everywhere else in the food paradise Chania - and the cereal has a tough cardboard texture, there is nothing to get your teeth into of a morning. On the other hand, I was stunned to be provided with soya milk very quickly, although this is an unusual request in Greece.

I'd definitely recommend both the city of Chania and Hotel Alexis for your holiday in Greece.

I have recently returned from a two week stay in Chania, Crete, and stayed solely at the Hotel Alexis with Theo and his wife and small group of LOVELY staff.
I was travelling alone but never was! The hotel is situated on a hill, giving spectacular views of the ocean and the charming town of Chania. In the mornings, a perfect breakfast is served which caters for everyone and you are always greeted by the resident cat Ursula.
In the evening, the hotel plays host to a true gem...Theodosi restaurant! Theo is a grand chef indeed, and despite me often being in the town around dinner time and ending up eating there most days through convenience as its a twenty minute walk to and from the hotel, i have to say that i never ate better anywhere else during my stay than i did at the hotel in Theos restaurant! I have eaten in many places around the world and Theo has to be up there with the best of them! The staff, Suzanne and Alan are lovely as is Theos wife and sister and their adorable son Yanni.
I wanted to get away and was looking for a more personally run place and thats exactly what i got. I felt part of the place in no time and will DEFINATELY be back.
Thanks so much Theo.
regards
Peter - London

We agree with five young boys from Uppsala, Sweden: Alexis Hotel is perfect, even for a couple aged +55! The hotel is nice, clean and the breakfast has all you need, so has the restaturant. The view from the hotel is magnificent, just wonderful to see sheep, a goat, dogs and the lovely cat Ursula from the balcony. We walked down the hill to a beach where we almost were alone! So nice! On the way back to the hotel we found olives and figues growing on trees and ready to eat.... Twenty minutes walk and we were in the middle of the old town of Chania. Perfect when you like to live outside the area just built for tourists. We'll come back!

Hotel on the outskirts of the city of Chania, very nice views from the windows, friendly service, food average. the only thing that was bad - it's a bathroom, a shower instead of a veil was material that was moldy at the bottom-I was afraid I would get ringworm ...

Overall hotel rating - 3/5
