“A lovely country pub”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

A lovely country pub out in the countryside half a mile from the steam train station. We were upgraded for free to the annex room which is a beautifully furnished living room and bedroom. It was very new and clean and seemed luxurious. The bed was very comfy and there were two flat screen TVs. Unfortunately as soon as we used the toilet we discovered it was blocked and was beginning to overflow. It took nearly 3 hours to mend, they had to get an emergency plumber in. The owner tried to find us alternative accomodation as the pub was full but to no avail as everything for 50 miles was full. Luckily the emergency plumber fixed it and the bathroom was recleaned. We spent three hours sat around in dirty clothes waiting to get washed and changed for dinner though and the owner kept saying 'we're not at fault, you're not at fault' as if we had equal responsibility to the management for the problem. They did give us a bottle of house wine as an apology however. Breakfast was fine: fresh fruit, muesli, cereals. There was a good choice of hot food including smoked haddock, kippers, full English. It was a shame that the toast wasn't as good as the previous night's bread. Well worth staying at but check the plumbing

We booked this place at the last minute and spent 3 nights staying here. It is in great location for visiting places in the area, such as Totnes and we received a warm welcome. the room was really nice and the bathroom was new, with a great shower. I would have no hesitation in staying again, plus the food and beer was great, the burger and proper real chips especially!

There are a few lovely lanes to walk down, including one that takes about 10 minutes and takes you to a lovely stream and the railway line where the 'vintage' trains that you pass on the way to the Inn run by.

Was really looking forward to our stay as seen such good comments from TA & others. The experience was mostly very good - great location, rooms good standard and very clean - although things like broken bathroom door which could not be closed should not be left unattended. The staff were very nice and helpful. The atmosphere & bar area make for a great pub. The thing that let it down was the food which did not live up to the previous reports. The evening meal was just about average for a good pub but nothing more than that, although prices are OK. For example the steak was a bit overcooked and the chips obviously from a packet - although ( I think ) were advertised on menu as home made. The bigest disapointment was the breakfast which again was just OK.My full English was very small ( not sure why anyone would serve half a mushroom- even a large one ) and my wifes egg benedict was on a very watery & soggy muffin. Perhaps being such a hot & glorious weekend meant the food staff were busier than normal but still a bit disapointing. Having said that we would probably go back because it is such a nice place.

We stayed for 2 nights in the new annexe and we had dinner each evening in the restaurant.
We rarely give a review unless the stay is exceptionally good.
Reception:- Friendly and attentive staff. No hesitation in dealing with a special request.
Room (annexe):- Spotlessly clean, good sized rooms including bathroom. No faults.
Bar:- Excellent service.
Restaurant:- Cannot fault the service. Staff not hovering over each table but prompt, yet unhurried, in taking orders and in clearing away. (Just as it should be, even when busy).
Menu:- Good choice for each course. (Modest descriptions do not do justice to the quality and beautiful presentation of each dish).
Food:- Simply outstanding. Presentation was as good as in any top restaurant.
Wine:- We chose well, though from a rather limited selection.
Breakfast:- Eggs prepared to perfection, according to preference. "Full English" breakfast was not as large as some but perfectly adequate. Again, the service was excellent.
Overall value for money:- By far the best we have experienced for many years.

Room Tip: New annexe is well worth the money.

We stayed at the Sea Trout this weekend and had 3 rooms booked. We felt that the hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful and were always there, from 8am at breakfast until last orders! We had great food in the lounge bar on Friday evening and nibbles on Saturday, all of the food including breakfast was excellent. We stayed in Room 3 which was very spacious however the double bed was much smaller than we are used to so it felt cramped. We loved the french door over the garden but would have really like a voile so that we would not have had to close the curtains so much and block out the sunshine. Lovely village and easy walk along the river and rail track. Will definately stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms over the garden are away from the road, we didn't hear any noise other than the birds..

Afraid the review isn't what you were expecting,
popped in after walking the dog down the river, good selection of drinks, ordered a drink at the bar, then some food, we were asked to pay for the food which i always think is strange
sat outside and waited, starters arrived which looked ok, but thats where it all begins!
asked the waitress for another couple of drinks, she went away then came back to tell us we would have to get our own drinks at the bar??????? if you want to be a restaurant then provide the service if you want to be a pub then i will get my own!
it was sunday so i decided to have roast beef, well i could have re soled my dads old boots with it and the veg was dry and quivering, the place was not very busy so i gather the chef had been keeping it all warm in anticipation of me coming in! (should have had beef burger like miss T)
the big downfall was that no body was checking if the meal or service was ok, so thats whats brought me back to trip advisor, you will see by me reviews i give credit where its due
oh well i said to Tracey, remind me not to go there again :(

We are very disappointed that you did not enjoy your meal. Most unusual as Sunday roasts are always a popular thing with many returning customers. It was a quiet Sunday this week and not surprising given the beautiful weather enticing everyone to the beach, but we do not have food sitting under lights keeping warm waiting for customers to come in like a carvery would. Dishes are cooked and plated to order. You should have been table checked, even when sitting in the garden, and I can only apologise for the lack of attention by the waiting staff and will address this with them. However I would like to address your issue with paying at the time of ordering when you were sitting in the garden. I have visited many places who run the same policy and I can sympathise with them as to why they do things this way. When we first came into the Sea Trout we let people run a "tab" but sadly the few spoilt it for the many by sneaking out the back gate without settling their bill. Therefore in line with many other establishments we adopted the policy of pay as you go if you are sitting in the garden. It is perfectly normal and indeed common practice to pay for items that you have gone to the bar to order and something most people do automatically without having to ask them. You have obviously experienced it before as you say "which I always find strange" in your comments above so you know it is not unusual for Pubs to do this. We provide table service where possible but we are a pub and not a restaurant and do not claim to be a restaurant. We have a "locals bar", a lounge bar area and a more formal area with laid tables that our customers refer as the restaurant area but ultimately we are an Inn and do not promote ourselves to be otherwise.

We had a marvellous weekend stay at the Sea Trout Inn, staying in the their delightful signature room. Everything was extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. We ate both evenings in the restaurant and the food was delicious, breakfasts were also just right. Sam and Jason, although extremely busy, could not have been more pleasant or helpful. A great stay.

Room Tip: I think that all the rooms are very comfortable.
