We stayed for a long weekend & had a wonderful experience. The food was excellent. The service provided by Robert was discrete & attentive.
The room was immaculate & the bathroom awesome. A problem with hot water was dealt with immediately.
Our room had a flagstone floor with rugs, I would recommend slippers.

We arrived (6 of us) on Friday evening to a friendly welcome from Robert and Di.
After checkin we had drinks in main sitting room followed by lovely dinner prepared by Pippa.
Our rooms were beautiful ,recenttly refurbished with great style.
Saturday and Sunday were spent exploring Ludlow, Wenlock Edge, and the Longmynd-stunning countryside- no people -great pubs.
After a fantastically relaxed week end we left on Monday following the utimate Shropshire Breakfast.

My partner and I decided to go to Old Downton Lodge to celebrate our engagement. We arrived on New Year's Eve to be greeted by Robert the owner. We were taken to our room, which had the wow factor, the whole place was immaculate, then shown around the the rest of the lodge. We booked to have dinner and were asked to the dining room for 7.30pm. We went for drinks first in the lounge area which had a roaring fire, then taken to our table by a very polite South African gentleman. The meal was outstanding, cooked to perfection, wonderful flavors and very generous portions. The service was the best i've ever known. I can't say one bad thing about Downton. We loved it and Robert and the boss (his wife Diane) are both so lovely, they can't do enough for you. We will definately visit again. Thanks to Robert and Diane for making our stay unforgettable.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 5 which was very spacious with a very comfortable and large bed. The bathroom was...

Set in the most picturesque countryside. We stayed overnight as a group of 15 and have never been made to feel more welcome, our room was immaculate and packed with character. Our evening meal was superb and the service was second to none, all served in a beautiful dining hall. We would highly recommend Old Downton Lodge to anyone.

Room Tip: we enjoyed choosing our room from the pictures on the web site. The room was even better than the ph...

The hotel is perfect and has so much character . Jayne who works at the hotel was the perfect host - she showed us to our room and made our stay really personal.

The only negative things I would say is:

Cold on the evening
Expensive bar
Staff in the morning serving breakfast was completly not fussed with us.
Breakfast was served cold and overcooked.

All in all a great trip but don't go to The Clive restaurant !

We stayed here overnight as a get-away to celebrate our engagement and had a lovely time. We stayed on a Monday when the restaurant is closed, although it wasn't a problem as we had planned to eat somewhere else. I was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call two days before we were due to arrive to let us know that thier restaurant was closed that night, and an offer to book us a table somewhere in ludlow - very thoughtful!
We loved the location of the hotel, it is very rural and we felt like we were completly away from it all. We were greeted when we arrived and shown round the hotel and to our room, and were recommended a resturant which we had seen on our way (The Clive, which was very nice although very busy and the service was slow at the end of the evening). Our room was lovely, the high ceiling and beams made it feel spacious and it was clean. We were given fresh milk and it was nice to have a 'proper' coffee machine rather than instant! Breakfast the next day was good, there was a good selection and the service was quick and the staff were friendly. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would go back.

The manager came to meet us as soon as we parked up, then showed us to our room which we loved. We couldn't believe the height of the ceilings, this made it feel very roomy. We settled ourselves in and then asked Ken if he could arrange a taxi for us to go into Ludlow as we were booked in at the Koo Japanese restaurant (gorgeous by the way), this wasn't a problem - although it was quite pricey with us being so far out of the way - £15 there & £15 back.

The breakfast the following morning was lovely - a nice selection of fruit and cereals followed by a full breakfast which was served very quickly. We also ate in the restaurant that evening and the meal, in particular the sticky date & ginger pudding, was lovely...Mmm. We found the service was great and the manager friendly, loved the weekend away - we would definitely recommoned this place...the price we paid was very reasonable - £140 for two nights. Unbeleivably the weather was also great...

I did have one gripe though and that is that the heating didn't come on at all on the Saturday and there wasn't enough hot water to have a nice long bath as I'd intended, although if I'd mentioned this to the manager I'm sure he would have done everything he could to resolve the problem.

Fascinating. Intriguing. Mesmeric. Pure escapism just seven miles from Ludlow, in some respects, Old Downton Lodge defies description: It is not a hotel, nor is it really a bed and breakfast or a restaurant with rooms. Each of the nine bedrooms are unforgettable – stylishly converted from historic farm buildings surrounding a flower bedecked courtyard, each is quirky, luxurious, packed with history and designed to make you smile. The hospitality is relaxed and genuine. The food – served in a dramatic dining hall - is exceptional and the wine list inspired. ... more   less
