“The Pub Next Door”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

This is a spacious and roomy pub with ample parking. It has very substantial bars with a wide range of beers (both standard and traditional) and also offers a reasonable range of wines and spirits. The food is filling and cheerful (although unsuitable for dieters). There is sometimes live music (it can be a bit loud) but the pub is a popular and lively location.

“Nice place shame about the food”
Reviewed November 17, 2013

We went on a Sunday before it got busy. The place is modern and in a good location. We found the staff very friendly and helpful. However it had to be two stars because of the quality of the food. My wife and I had a carvary. The meat was dry, the potatoes were barely edible. The cauliflower cheese, lacked cheese. Other local carvary's we have been to, give more choice It was the worst meal out I had experienced for many a year. I have to follow a gluten free diet the helpful staff went to the chef, but didn't come back much wiser, basically all you can have is the carvary, but not the gravy. Other restaurants are far more clued up and even have gluten free items shown on the menu. They really must up their game.

“Good pub food”
Reviewed November 14, 2013

My wife and I met a friend here for a quick drink, meal and catch-up. Let's be honest this is a pub - its not a gourmet restaurant or Michelin starred establishment. The food and prices reflect that. We had three well cooked generous meals at reasonable prices. No faults with the food or price. If you want gourmet food - go somewhere else. If you want good food at pub prices, then the John Gilbert is a good place to try. I'd recommend the mixed grill - steak, gammon, chicken, 2 sausages, 2 eggs and all the trimmings for £11 - what is there to grumble about? The staff are polite, yet pleasant and 'down to earth' too. Its good to see a return of pubs selling pub food and not coming up with bizarre combinations of ingredients that would be best suited to chemistry lab!
