“Great pub food at an affordable price”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

Me and a friend visited the John Gilbert on a Monday evening. On arriving we noticed that it was quite busy but was assured by the staff that there wasn't a waiting time on food. We got our drinks and it wasn't even 20 minutes before our meals were on our table. My steak was cooked to perfection and was plated up exactly how i had specified with the waitress and my friend thoroughly enjoyed her hunters chicken and side order of onion rings. We passed on dessert as we were so full but enjoyed a latte and regular coffee. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience and will be returning at our next possible opportunity.

“Very Good Food”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

This has very good food (unless it has run out, which has happened occassionaly, hence only a 4 star not 5 star rating), good service, is very close to the motorway network and A580 making it an ideal meeting place.

“Fish and chips”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

The one dish you can rely on is Fish, chips and mushy peas. The fish is a good size, nice and white and the batter is light and crispy.

“Gave it a second/third/fourth chance and..........”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

YES!......The John Gilbert is once more at the BOTTOM of my list for pub food in the area!!!
Why? We visited on Thursady this week for tea at 6.15. There was hardly anyone in and it was freezing cold-not a good start and having to all but stand on the chairs and whistle to attract the attention of the waiter TP order food is not recommended!! (the said waiter we found out as we came to pay-had had enough and was leaving anyway)
We ordered our food and drinks...fine..... Two meals after quite a wait, arrived, perfectly fine(gammon and a chicken burger) the third meal arrived,Hunters Chicken WITH BBQ sauce-which a had specifically NOT asked for. The waiter give him his due,was most apologetic and even brought me his 'check' to show he had ordered it without the sauce. After the last mouthful of chicken burger & gammon meals had been devoured and I had been 'pinching' chips, my tea finally arrived. The food was fine, piping hot and well cooked....I just had to sit and eat it while my companions sat and watched ME now!!! We ordered another round of the same drinks, this time I got a cheap house wine (passed off as Sauvignon blanc!)
Here I will end the Saga of The John Gilbert.......
It's in a Fantastic location, why oh why can they not get their act together. As I live local, we keep going and being disappointed coming out muttering 'that's the very last time i'll go there'
I think their time has come......as far as I'm concerned the tea towel is over the pump for the very last ime!
