“Disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2013

I recently had a meal with my husband and another couple. We went to the Ellerby as my friends husband is 6ft 7' has an enormous appetite and knew by previous visits that the portion sizes were generous. What a disappointment. 3 mushrooms for the starter.....Really! The portion sizes have been significantly cut, which I think was the best thing about this place really. I had a salad which I would say was about a third smaller than it used to be. Now it has just become an average place to eat rather than somewhere where you would recommend to a friend. I don't think we will be returning in a hurry.

Thank you for your review.
We are very sorry to read of your disappointment with the Ellerby on your recent visit to us. It is frustrating for us all when our guests are not satisfied and indeed leave us unhappy, I hope you will accept our humble apologies.
Please be assured we value your custom and our high standards of service, menu content, portion size and fresh quality ingredients that we source locally, the principle on which the Ellerby has traded for the past 28 years, have not intentionally altered in any way.
We do hope you will find it in your heart to give us another try and please do make yourselves known to us so we can give you that special personal welcome.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

We have visited The Ellerby regularly over the years and chose to visit here for my Grandad's 75th birthday because we've never had a bad meal here in the last. Unfortunately, this was not the case this time around. The service was very slow with a long wait to take our orders for food and drinks and in between courses. The young man who was waiting on was difficult to understand when bringing meals out! We were given the specials menu, which had two main courses on but when we came to order 25 minutes later, we were told one of them was sold out. My sister chose something else from the main menu but that was also sold out. In the past, the scampi used to be huge portions and the chips were dark coloured, fluffy and homemade. Both were a disappointment this time around. The vegetables were luke warm and watery, the broccoli was hard and undercooked. My brother-in-law and partner both ordered the Ellerby Special (a mixed grill) and both their steaks were over cooked, even though they asked for them medium-rare. If you aren't a fan of cream (I'm lactose intolerant myself) or raspberry then there are few desserts for you to choose from. It wasn't a bad meal but it wasn't particularly nice and certainly wasn't anywhere near as good as it has been in the past. To be honest, I wish we had gone to the Jolly Sailor's instead!

Thank you for your review.
We are very sorry to read that you didn’t enjoy your meal with us, please accept our apologies.
It is clear from your review that our training and usual high standards have failed in this circumstance and we fully accept that a wait of 25 minutes to order your meal is unacceptable. We also have procedures in place for communication, between the kitchen and the staff out front, when we run out of certain meal options, unfortunately these were not followed properly on this occasion.
We hope that our staff were able to rectify some, if not all, of the food issues mentioned on the day when your table was checked on shortly after being served your meals. Please be assured that our chips are hand cut from fresh potatoes, however we do believe that perhaps due to the standard of potatoes available at the moment our chips can be improved.
We understand your comments about our dessert menu, however there are 10 items on our main dessert menu (3 of which contain raspberries) as well as 1 on our Daily Specials menu which gives you a much greater choice than most restaurants. We also have a further Vegan dessert menu for those with dairy allergies (although pre-ordering is advised with this menu).
Again we can only apologise that you did not receive customer service and a meal of the Ellerby’s usual standards and we do hope you will find it in your heart to give us another try.

As below, we would certainly stay again. Handy for Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay etc. excellent food, friendly staff, good value for money. Poor mobile phone reception though, was the only downside, otherwise, an enjoyable stay, we had room 7 on the ground floor, very clean, only a double bed, not sure if they have rooms with king size beds. Nice communal conservatory to relax in, got chatting to some guests who return each year. Would certainly recommend anyone to stay here, ideal spot to explore the beauty of North Yorkshire and surrounding areas.

Room Tip: Didn't mean to put 'terrible' and won't let me undo this! There wasn't a spa or...

i have stayed here 3 times now and the attraction is that it is only 1 mile from Runswick Bay and 5 minutes in the car to Whitby and that it offers 2 rooms which are dog friendly (for an extra cost of £5). The rooms are standard and very clean. There is a lovely sitting out area at the back if you're there in sunshine and a conservatory that guests can use. They have a large bar area and a restaurant on site serving traditional meals. Staff are always friendly and welcoming.

This is an ideal place for breakfast, lunch or evening meal. All cooked to perfection using local traders produce. High standard of cleanliness and staff are friendly and professional. Although we have never stayed in the accomodation, friends of ours have and report this to also be to a high standard.
Try this place out....you will not be disappointed.

My family and I have been visiting The Ellerby for many years, both for lunch and evening meals, as well as weekend breaks and we have NEVER been disappointed with anything. The food is of a consistently excellent standard with a wide choice of dishes from the main and specials menu. The staff are ALWAYS friendly, welcoming and helpful. I look forward to every visit!

We spent two nights at the hotel for a short break, it was a special Winter offer, two nights bed and breakfast for the price of one. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we could not fault anything. We were shown to our room which was beautifully appointed, large bed, lovely bathroom with bath and shower.Spotlessly clean, I do not think I have stayed in any hotel that was sleaner than this one.
We ate in the dining on both nights and the food was superb. Not at all your average pub grub. Breakfast was equally good, plenty of choice and the freshly cooked full English was excellent..
The staff were all very helpful and extremely pleasant. It had been snowing during our stay and when we left one of the staff even came out to our car to see if we wanted to borrow a de-icer.

Room Tip: We were in Room 8 which is a standard double, but we were shown room 4 which is superb newly refurbi...
