“Dog Friendly Heaven!”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

Prior to booking Gwel an Mor we had booked Retallack Resort as they stated they were 'dog friendly' however once we had booked there we discovered that Retallack discriminated against breeds of dog which aren't actually banned in the UK! We then started to wonder if all Cornwall resorts were doggy discriminatory towards our lovely friendly Rottie however we were thrilled to find Gwel an Mor would happily allow our four legged friend regardless of his 'breed' :)

We managed to grab a last minute deal for end of Aug midweek in VIP dog friendly lodge with hot tub for £700 4 nights which for school summer peak season we thought was a bargain! The lodge was spotless & included a very much appreciated bottle of Chenin Blanc in the fridge!! Needless to say we enjoyed a glass on our balcony gazing out over the sea views while our doggie enjoyed surveying the sights & sounds of nature on the doorstep (pics of our balcony view attached). The hot tub was a delightful added bonus after exploring the local coastal & forest walks which were literally on the doorstep - doggy heaven!! (Also buggy heaven as the footpaths to the local forest were flat & gravelled)

We also brought our high functioning autistic son with us who is 4 years old, he really loved the upside down house and we had no fear of him falling down the stairs thanks to the very sturdy stair gate installed at the top of the stairs. We had no issue with the open plan kitchen however I did wonder about child proofing for parents with younger children or children who have a fascination with opening/closing doors, pressing buttons on appliances etc? The Terrace restaurant on site were extremely accommodating for our son too, allowing us to sit at the 'undesirable' table by the kitchen door & the bar which was situated away from the other tables allowing us peace of mind that our son wouldn't disturb the other diners too much if he was noisy. They also had mini decks of cards on the tables which entertained our son for ages lining up the cards, it was one of the most relaxing & quiet meals out we have had in a long time! (Pic attached) We must also mention the absolutely amazing on site Feadon Farm Wildlife Farm & the wonderful Gary Zammit!! Our son was absolutely fascinated by everything & Gary was extremely patient even when our son insisted on asking which was the 'naughty' one each time he saw a new animal lol! Our son is still talking about it now, think that speaks volumes for how good it is (pics attached). Our son also enjoyed the on site pool however we did feel that this area could be improved with the addition of a slide(s) and toddler splashzone to entertain kids? Maybe the pitch & putt area could be made into crazy golf too?

In summary, we absolutely loved the location, the lodges, the facilities and the peace & quiet of the resort and are looking forward to returning with our new Bulldog puppy next year as we have since discovered that Gwel an Mor allow 2 doggies in the accommodation! One very happy family, thank you Gwel an Mor!! :D

Thorncrofts and 4 legged friends,

Thank you for taking the time to write, and your comments on Gwel an Mor.

And yes we love dogs! and they love us! there are great walks all around us, 26 miles of mineral tramway routes, Tehidy Country Park next to us with 300 acres to walk around, and of course the beach at Portreath most of the year.

Doggie Heaven!

Hope to see you all back soon.

loveley publicity and website. Expensive. Well supplied villa with everything needed for a 1 week stay - except food of course. Staff very friendly and helpful. Chalet we were allocated needed new iron and ironing board. Broadband by wifi is useless and mobile telephone reception is dreadful - not the fault of Gwelanmor but best be aware. Swimming changing area and toilets were not cleaned during the day so pretty grim by the end of the day. Long walk (20 minutes) down to the beach and very steep inclines on the way back. Excellent restaurant on site which does a take away menu which is very good.

Room Tip: all chalets have sea views but the sea is quite a distance away

On the way back from a visit to morgans barns at St.Agnes we dropped in for lunch, this place is a delight and we would stay here but as we live a few miles further down the coast........
The restraunt is a delight, spotless with a fine modern interior and splendid conservatory with {as you will see} a fine view over Portreath to the bay.
Lovely greeting by equally lovely staff, good range of food,Wine & Beer. We choose one pulled pork Panini and one Hoisin duck wrap, both had a small side salad and a bowl of fries washed down with chilled Lager.

Will we go back? for sure,it was a very pleasant lunch in good surroundings and served by attentive staff not to mention easy free parking.
Go try I am sure you will enjoy.

This was our 5th time staying here. Another lovely stay. It is great to go back to somewhere where you know the standards will be excellant, just like your previous stay.
The staff are always welcoming and happy to help.
Swimming pool was great and we never had a time when it was too busy even in the middle of the school holidays.
The staff in the Terrace went that extra mile to sort our sons birthday dinner out even when they had lost power to the kitchen!

Just returned from a week at Gwel An Mor we had a deluxe VIP lodge which we were able to access at about 3pm, nice surprise to find a platter of food, champagne, wine, bread milk etc most unexpected but a lovely welcome. Lodges clean airy and comfy. We had maid service and hats of to them they do a fantastic job. I had a pamper session in the spa which was great would recommend to all.
Big plus are the staff - they are extremely helpful and friendly

The Terrace is nice, serves good food but could do with a mid week menu change, staff excellent, owner says they have 80 covers but, found it frustrating at times that you couldn't get a table between 7-8pm when asked staff admitted the kitchen can't cope with too many people eating.
Read a review family stayed in 2011 and said poor children's facilities owner replied stating 'Next year we will have, and indoor children's play area, a cafe, rock climbing walls, entertainments area, along with a zip wire, Zorbing and Mountain Boarding.' at the end of August 2013 these have not arrived. I agree there is nothing for kids or teenagers to do here.

We have stayed in many 5 star lodges over the last few years and the accommodation is on a par with Gwel an Mor expect for 'The Valley' which is truly 5*+, BUT the facilities at the other sites are much much better than Gwel an Mor

Yes the lodges are close together, the only disappointment was the hot tub, our lodge slept 6 there is no way 6 people would get in the hot tub it is only suitable for 2, the indoor pool is very small compared to the number of lodges.

Overall a nice place to stay but I have to agree with others it is not value for money. Other sites that offer 5 star lodges are £600 cheaper for the same week & lodge spec. Would not return to Gwel an Mor as I can't justify the high prices they charge.

My wife, three children (aged 5 - 1), mother and I stayed at Gwel An mor in June. We chose to opt for the VIP deluxe option and were not disappointed. On arrival the booking in process was quick and the staff very friendly. On entering the chalet we discovered the cot we had booked was not in place, however the staff sprung into action and delivered one to us in under three minutes! The chalet itself was brilliant with really comfortable beds, great bathroom / shower and a great little kitchenette. The little touches were brilliant, with a very unexpected amount of food (locally sourced) wine and champagne. The hot tub was great and my wife and I spent a few evening's relaxing outside, regardless of the weather.

The gym, although small, was quiet and has enough equipment to 'tick over'. The indoor pool is great and our kids loved it. All very clean.

The real jewel in this Cornish crown is the wildlife experience. We were lucky enough to be the only people booked onto our particular activity and had the undivided attention of the infectiously enthusiastic Gary. This is a must, our kids loved the activities and still talk about Gary and the animals. Even if you don't have children you will enjoy the experience and learn in the process. Excellent, and thank you Gary and staff.

Finally, the restaurant. Superbly child friendly, well priced and excellent portions. Food was brilliant. Staff very courteous and helpful. All in, our visit was superb. The VIP option is a must as the cleaners do a superb job, and after days on the beach etc it was great to return and not have to worry about cleaning. The spa treatment was also brilliant (hot stone massages). Apologies for the prolonged review, but Gwel An not deserves every word of credit. We will definitely return next year, we are smitten :)

This was our third visit so we obviously like the destination. The accommodation is still excellent but as one reviewer has already noted, the owners need to keep working to keep the 5 star label valid. Small issues such as black mould in the shower and peeling worktop edges take the shine off slightly. On past visits we have eaten on most nights in the restaurant but were surprised this year to see some of the same items on the menu as last year and quite dubious food quality which meant that after one meal , we ate in our lodge for the rest of the week. I had absolutely vile crab linguine containing huge pieces of nearly raw onion (not in any recipe I know for crab linguine) and 1 cm chunks of red chilli, all drowning in a centimetre of horrible cream sauce. Bottled beer was warm, there were tiny portions of spaghetti bolognese for the children and overcooked fish for the other main course. The food has been so much better in previous years so this was a disappointment as I didn't want to cook when on holiday.

Room Tip: Splash out on a VIP lodge for best views and more privacy
