“Relaxed dining”

I have recently been to Ascension and found it up to their previous standard. I like their new lunch format and found it great value. The atmosphere and service were good and no request was too hard. Husband had the beef pie and enjoyed it while I shared a platter with daughter. The assortment on it satisfied both our tastes and was plentiful enough that we were unable to completely clear it. We also had a wine tasting with the meal which was most enjoyable.

Once, some years ago, Ascension was a nice, reliable spot for lunch. Sadly now the whole format has changed to a strange 'make your own platter' show, with some very limited cooked choices. Whatever you do, do not elect for the cooked choices. The beef pie is like something out of a gas station warmer and the vegetarian quiche appears to have come straight off the deli counter at New World. To be fair, making your own selection from the Serbian charcuterie and French cheeses looks like it would be infinitely better. However, there seems to be plenty of scope for major delays in service with people pondering their choices. The wine's still nice and the gardens are charming but we won't be going back.

I thank Ditch Diver for taking the time to write a review.
We, we did change the format about 6 months ago in response to most people telling us that when they visit a vineyard for lunch (we are only open in the evening for private functions), they dont want the 'full on' steak / chicken / fish dish that most places need to charge close to $40 to make work. They majority told us (we have 14 000 customers we communicate with and survey) they wanted a more casual, affordable authentic experience, and that is what they get here.
We realize and knew from the start that the new format would not be for everyone, but the vast majority love it (refer previous reviews) and we have been full all summer.
I can assure Ditch Diver that everything is made on site from scratch, and if he / she can tell me which gas station they get their pies from, I will be sure to check them out!
I am sorry Ditch Diver wont be back, especially now that much of our charcuterie is about to mature ready to be served hot in various ways this winter.

“Gazpacho as It Should Be Made”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

Ascension Winery is a classy place that should be open more often that it actually is. The quality is terrific.

The luncheon menu is simple, but when we ordered Gazpacho, we got more than we expected. It was perfect, with creme fraiche topping it. My wife and I are "gluten free." No problem. It was accompanied by sour-dough like roll of hearty proportions and fabulous flavor. Happy eaters - both of us. A "Mug of Fries" were also on order, and that came piping hot with a pot of aioli that was also perfect. Well done.

Again, if you are into wine, the offerings are large and varied.
