“Eco-friendly hotel rooms in the midst of vineyards”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2013

We booked this hotel last minute and we are so happy we found the town of Matakana. Check in was easy and the gentleman at the front desk was not only nice but very helpful with restaurant suggestions. This property is beautiful with views of green rolling hills, olive groves and vineyards. Each room is a is a super Eco-friendly space. We had 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, living room, kitchenette, 8 people could sleep comfortably plus we had a washer and dryer. Yes, laundry facilities were exciting in the middle of our trip. The hotel is close to restaurants, the bay for boating, wineries and is only 45 minutes north of Auckland or so.

My niece and I stayed two nights and could have stayed longer. All we needed were our cats and we could live there! Beautiful views from #7. We had some rain and a beautiful rainbow to top it off. Just an hour from my niece's home in Auckland, perfect weekend retreat from workweek stress, and the drive to/from Auckland is spectacular. Will stay again on my next visit from California!

Room Tip: We loved #7's views of estates across the valley, wind whistling through tall trees, and lots of...

This is destined to become one of our favourite places to have a relaxing and revitalizing break.
The flexibility and quality of the accommodation in cleverly designed 'baches' set amongst the rows of vines and landscaping is all geared to enjoying this beautiful place with a high degree of privacy and comfort.
The township of Matakana whilst small, nevertheless sports plenty of choices for fine dining , delightful snacks and good shopping and is a wonderful 'hub' for visiting the stunning bays and beaches that abound along with the many boutique vineyards, all within easy reach.
One would have to be very jaded not to come away from this lovely place feeling renewed.

Pleasant beds and a lovely setting. Third bedroom is a garage with a fully exposed garage door. No bathroom here so person who slept in there had to go into another bedroom to get access to a bathroom. No carpet on floor and the places creaks. No sound insulation so very noisy.
We left a day early.
A bit of a disappointment really.

Hi Zane,

Thank you for your feedback in regards to your recent stay at Riverside Matakana. In response, our luxury kiwi baches are advertised as being two bedroom, 2 bathroom, quality furnishings, spacious living and expansive decks, set on 30 acres of vineyard and olive groves. The 3rd bedroom you describe is only ever mentioned as an additional sleepout. We are very upfront about the sleepouts being for additional guests in your group and are ideal only really for children and close family groups. All have a sleep out, which provides for larger groups and the budget conscious. We recommend in all our advertising that the optimum number of people per bach is 2 couples, to really appreciate the bach experience. In saying that a number of groups do take advantage of the extra beds and seem to make them work.

Currently the baches are all going through various upgrades to retain the standard and yes there are a couple of sleep outs that currently need full carpeting, which will be done before winter. All sleep outs are lined and have heating available, if need be. The internal look and feel of these sleep outs is also under review to upgrade them to a better standard. But currently they are provided as an extra facility to the bach.

With noises that the construction makes, it is due to the temperature changes that occur here and is unavoidable.

As a measure of goodwill, if you were to choose to stay at Riverside Matakana again, please make contact to our main email host@riversidematakana.co.nz and we will certainly look after you on your return.

We appreciate all feedback and thank you for you comments.

Kind regards

Kelvin Napier

We stayed 3 nights and from start to finish our experience was thoroughly enjoyable. Michael's hospitality is amazing, the cottages are trendy, clean and comfortable and from the balcony have beautiful views out over the river and rolling hillside. The starry night sky was stunning. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: We believe that Room 12 has the best views!!

We held my daughter's wedding at the Riverside last weekend. The ceremony was at nearby Scott's Landing and the wedding dinner was at Riverside. We booked the place from Friday to Sunday as all the wedding guests spent the weekend there. It was the most amazing weekend. We can't thank Michael enough for all his help in making this a perfect "wedding weekend". Nothing was too much trouble to ensure everything ran smoothly and that all the guests were looked after. Also big thanks to Kelvin for all his hard work. The accommodation is of a very high standard, very spacious, well laid out and exceptionally clean. The location is great with lovely views.
We would highly recommend the Riverside as a beautiful place to stay.

We recently got married at Riverside and what an exceptional experience. The owners and manager could not do enough for us, very helpful and friendly, beyond their call of spduty.
We used riversides conference room for our reception and it was stunning, exceptional food, staff and environment, everything was taken care of to a very high standard.
The batch rooms are spotless with plenty of space and provide everything you need for a relaxing time with stunning views. Highly recommended riverside and we will definitely be returning.
Thanks
Sarah and Guy
