“Warm welcome, excellent place to stay”
Reviewed April 29, 2011

Aristea herself welcomes guests to her beautifully located apartments and rooms on the 'periferal' street of Anogia. She speaks no english, and we have only a few words of greek, but that doesn't deter her friendly chatter. We had a double room, with more space than many places we stayed, a spotless en suite bathroom and a balcony overlooking the valley below.
Aristea cooks breakfast in a little family kitchen/breakfast room, and offers eggs, cheese, honey - all the usual bits and pieces, and hot freshly cooked cheese toasties - to keep you goinf through a day in the mountains!

I took a seredipitious drive into the mountains during my trip to Crete and ended up in Anogia, the closest town to the Idean Cave, one of the purported birthplaces of Zeus. I pulled into Hotel Aristea in a rainstorm and there was Aristea herself, motioning to me from her home next door "Ella, ella" ("come, come"). I stayed here for one night after being plied with Greek coffee and sweets. The rooms were immaculate and the balcony had a spectacular view the next morning when the rain had cleared up. Great value- only 30 euros with a modest breakfast. I recommend this as an example of Cretan hospitality.

I stayed at the Aristea Studio and rooms in August with my husband and friends. The rooms are spotless! My group rented two rooms. Both of the rooms had a gorgeous valley view with a large shared veranda on the bottom floor. Each room was two-level with a divan bed, small kitchen, television, fireplace and bathroom with shower, on the lower floor and a large double bed + one single bed with a televison, bathroom with shower and balcony on the upper floor. Aristea, the owner, is pleasant, no-nonsense woman who greets her guests every morning with coffee, cookies, cheese and fruits that are in season in the alcove next to her residence which is adjacent to the hotel. If sitting down with your host isn't your thing, there is a full service kitchen with food items available for use in the hotel. Aristea recommended a tavern to eat at our first night (it's just up the street across from the giant warrior statue with some of the best Cretan food we ever tasted! The town of Anogia is very rustic and may be a little macho for some as the men all sport giant busy mustaches and many still carry the traditional Cretan dagger shoved in their waistlines. We visited the town during the annual celebrations commemorating the third burning of the entire village by the Germans during World War II followed by the festival for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary the next day. Being a town renowed for its music, both nights featured live, free, whole-village concerts. It's definitely an experience not to be missed. Aristea knew we would be cold, so she even supplied us with hefty jackets and sweaters so that we would be comfortable. Additionally, I believe the hotel has wifi. I will be visiting again and again!
