“Full of potential but ultimately disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

Fresh back from a yoga retreat hosted by Leela Cottages I'd like to give you some feedback about the place
- The yoga studio is well equipped and spacious
- Organisation at Leela Cottages was chaotic, not helped by the owner going on holiday on the Tuesday after we arrived. There was another yoga group there at the same time as us and often they would run over their allotted time or come in while we were still practising. Maybe yoga shala etiquette hasn’t reached Russia yet! The guy on the desk didn’t seem to have too much authority or motivation to resolve issues of this kind.
- Noise is a big issue at this location. There is a newish bar close by which played loud music, sometimes until 2am in the morning. There is also a club set into the hill which on one evening played Trance anthems at full blast from 9pm until 9am. Even the other yoga group caused a noise nuisance by hosting a Hari Krishna style band in the yoga shala one evening until 11:30pm. None of this is helpful when you are getting up at 06:30.
- Food is excellent but service is slow and the main communal areas could do with some freshening up.

The place has the potential to be a little slice of heaven (location, weather, food etc.) but Leela Cottage management need to get their act together. However, bar / club noise is probably out of their hands and will ultimately destroy this as a yoga venue.

The grounds were fantastic and thanks to a wonderful yoga teacher so was the week of yoga. The food was also very pleasing. I was sharing the deluxe cottage with a friend. Thankfully the bed was big enough for us to share, as sleeping in the room above would have been dangerous, since the loo was in the lower room - steep stairs. One of the steps onto the deck broke while we were there and we didnt want to have to descend in the middle of the night. This particular cottage is one of the few that has not been repainted or updated which is staggering given it is the most expensive of all the cottages and the least attractive. In order for my friend to get into her side of the bed she had to crab walk along the end of the bed between the wardrobe and then between the bed and the window - thats how small the room was. That said, we checked most of the other rooms and they all looked great. This cottage was also next door to the Boom Boom club next door (not Leela's fault obviously) but is was very NOISY and motorbikes were often coming down the track along side our room at all times of the night. We did have a seaview, but it was more a view of the stall at the end of the path and the brick partially finished hut also at the end of the walk to the beach. We were however, given a full refund of the extra cost for the upgrade - hope that was from the cottages and not our yoga teacher. I would happily stay in one of the more modernised cottages next time.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the done up rooms. They are at the top of the garden not the beach end.

We stayed in the White Feather cottage, situated in the cool leafy coconut grove surroundings, literally just a minutes walk from the beach. We thought the location was great and the Indian food in the restaurant is spectacular. The best dal fry in Ashwem (and we tried this a lot !). Very good fish curry also and the Paneer 65 which was apparently a starter, but pronounced delicious and big enough for a main course.
Slightly ramshackle electrical sockets, some worked, some didn’t and our shower broke after a couple of days. But, they arranged for us to have a shower in a vacant cottage whilst ours was fixed (a few hours later) top marks.
However, Ashwem beach has changed a lot since our last visit in 2006 and we had the luck/misfortune to be to be staying there on the Russian New Year, Jan 14th. Next door to Leela is La Cabana beach resort which has the new Soma Project bar/club/restaurant attached. Next up is a new hotel/club for Russians called Bardo. Both Soma and Bardo had very loud, very good (if you like techno) Russian NYE parties on the 13th and 14th January respectively which went on well into the night. Some of the yoga warriors staying at Leela and on Ashwem had their noses put out of joint by this.
Overall, we felt prices at Leela were a little high, but this was outweighed by the location and the staff who were super friendly and very helpful. We will go back.

Thanks for reviewing Leela Cottages. We will keep on our efforts to give the guests a pleasant and
memorable stay.

As far as the loud music is concerned it is shameful that some of these beach clubs are spoiling the calm ambiance at Ashwem. We are trying to get the music intensity from these clubs controlled by 10 PM.

We had a lovely time at the Leela Cottages and staff went out of their way to accommodate the needs of our large group. The cottages were basic but well presented and spacious. We ate two fabulous dinners here and my boyfriend is still raving about the king fish and prawns.

I think as the season gets in to full swing this place will get better and better as we did have a few issues. Dinner was slow, we booked for 8pm and we didn't eat before 9.30pm. Power outages were common which was frustrating at night when it was so hot and aircon needed. The power outages also resulted in a couple of iphone charges being fried which was a shame. The bathrooms could do with some extra lighting as they were really too dark in the evenings. Also the cottages could do with some better curtains - although they face away from each other and are not that overlooked we did feel a little exposed and would have liked non see through curtains!

The beach itself is lovely and there are a couple of good beach bars to the left and right of the cottages. However there were limited options for going out nearby (perhaps early season) but the staff are happy to arrange taxis to nearby restaurants/bars which will wait and bring you home again - just make sure you negotiate a good rate.

Overall and subject to some improvements I would definitely recommend these cottages and the area. They are good value for money. Beyond the cottages try to go to Old Goa, if you can, for a change of scenery and some history of Goa.

If you ever want to get away from a bustling life and enjoy Goan beaches, this is the place to go. Staff is super friendly, the Indian food that is prepared is truly magnificent (although western food can be ordered as well, the menu is balanced). The owner Ravi is always prepared to help out or provide sound advice. The designer huts are very nice, airconditioned and with a fan, and with Indian antique furniture. Step on the beach for lovely walks, beautiful sunsets on the Arabian Sea, or a nice dip into the sea. A place not to forget, feels like heaven. I'll be back ...

Room Tip: Any hut is fine, with windows with glass (airconditioning) windows that mostly provide a nice view.

my wife and i stayed here in april 2002 ,we have probably stayed in the best huts and cottages goa has to offer and i must say leela is up there with the best..the hospitality was fantastic and such beautiful chilled laid back vibe.cottages were fist class especially their new ones...that is the best i have tried and only H2o at agonda can beat it for location but not for quality.
if anyone is considering staying at leeela stop considering and go fot it.you won't regret it.
one last word is thanks for having us leela and all the best for the future :)))

Room Tip: the newer cottages are plusher but the older cottages are still class and give better VFM

When we got to the cottages, we had two. Mine had a faulty air conditioner and at 95F outside, it was unbearable. Ravi was great about scrambling to get me a new cottage as fast as possible!

My new cottage was cool and immaculate, with excellent hot and cold running water. My only gripe is that the beds were quite hard, but once you travel around India, you'll see that ALL the beds are hard, even in 5 Star resorts.

The grounds were mystical and the beach was magical!! I loved every minute and look forward to going back!!
