“Loved it!”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

When we got to the cottages, we had two. Mine had a faulty air conditioner and at 95F outside, it was unbearable. Ravi was great about scrambling to get me a new cottage as fast as possible!

My new cottage was cool and immaculate, with excellent hot and cold running water. My only gripe is that the beds were quite hard, but once you travel around India, you'll see that ALL the beds are hard, even in 5 Star resorts.

The grounds were mystical and the beach was magical!! I loved every minute and look forward to going back!!

we have travelled to goa umpteen number of times, and have preferred palolim beach shacks, over main stream hotels...it's always been fun but we have missed the comfortable and clean rooms that one gets in nice hotels, and lately palolim has also become very crowded...landed in leela cottages just by chance, and the beach, the rooms turned out to be really good...they have ac rooms with nice antique furniture, hammock and a private garden area for each room, where you can nice breakfast, with the beach just a minute's walk basically just outside the resort and the beach is awesome.... the room rates are reasonable, the service is very friendly , provided by shankar and many others( all of them are very sweat and friendly)...the owner ravi takes special interest in making it comfortable for the guests... they even have wifi
Ashwem beach is quite, clean and pretty and some activities are available close by, like you can hire surf boards at copa cabana, also an instructor teaching kite surfing lessons, some nice eating places....go for eating place near babu's ...the french restaurant nearby is highly overrated...food quality is so so....
we had one indian meal which shankar cooked at the leela cottages and it was really yummy....
So all in all comfortable rooms, friendly service, reasonably priced, next to a pretty beach, good eating places nearby, we are defy going back

As a regular traveller I was bowled over by the kindness and warmth that exuberated from the people of this beautiful part of India.

The resort is functional and basic, literally on the beach, clean and tropical. Healthy, wholesome fresh food is prepared daily. The staff can’t do enough for you,

Would I come here again? Absolutely!

If you want a McDonalds and a Starbucks on every corner, 5 star hotels with private pools then this is not the place for you, go to Spain; if you truly want to lose yourself in something magical come here!

We stayed with other UK visitors who were a great bunch, apart from a couple of geriatric women who moaned at the slightest thing, this was a great holiday!

My friend and I spent 2 weeks at Leela Cottages as part of a Yoga holiday. The huts were fine until it rained when quite a few sprung prodigious leaks! The aircon was variable, it worked but didn't stay on because the electricity supply is quite erratic and they don't pay for the full power link. They have a generator for emergencies. There is WiFi but again, not a consistent service although it is free.

Decor isn't too bad. Big picture windows with curtains which are best kept drawn to keep the sun out. We had two single beds with the hardest mattresses known to man, it spoiled my stay as I found it hard to sleep. The bathroom is basic but adequate, water supply to the shower is fine although the geyser is very small so the hot doesn't last very long. The toilet works and didn't smell but several times was home to a frog (when it wasn't on a wall or under a picture); a bit unnerving in a rather dark room in the night to find Jeremy Fisher peering up at you from the seat :o) We had linen change and a quick clean every other day (sorry but blokes just don't do much of a job!)

Our stay included meals, the breakfasts were always fresh fruit salad served with yoghurt, honey and a sort of muesli and eggs anyway by request. Freshly squeezed fruit juice, watermelon, papaya or pineapple and their speciality, hot ginger and lemon drinks. Dinner was always curried vegetables with dhall and rice and roti. All tasty and you could ask for meat or fish for an extra charge which was never more than a couple of hundred rupees. There is an inhouse menu if you want to purchase lunch etc. and the staff seem happy to cook at any time.

At present, an extremely good yoga teacher, Paramjit Anand does yoga classes twice daily until May. She plans to continue next year. There is a purpose built Shala with ceiling fans.

The grounds are very pleasant, coconut palms (beware falling branches and coconuts!) and various chairs, loungers, tables and hammocks were dotted about in front of huts. The beach was a short stroll away and was very clean and sandy. The sea is always quite rough but it is possible for good swimmers to have a dip and there were others kite surfing. There is a prevailing wind all the time which makes the beach cooler. The usual sarong sellers walk up and down and are difficult to get rid of but they always remain polite and pleasant.

There are plenty of other restaurants and bars along the beach. One has music playing all day and most of the night with a constant bass thump. There are a lot of dogs but these are unfailing good tempered and friendly and all look quite well fed and mostly keep close to the food outlets. They are tolerated by the locals.

This is a lovely place if you like the heat, the beach and eating out for not much money. The roads are variable in quality but have improved on what they used to be like. Taxis to markets and larger towns are quite cheap especially if you share. Leela cottages is presently run by Ravi who is very pleasant and helpful although what he promises and what he delivers are pretty standard Indian practices. The site is kept clean and fairly tidy (again by Indian standards) and I can recommend it. It is safe for children and has a night security guard.

Most of the reviews here seem to have confused the Leela Cottages at Mandrem ( north Goa ) with other resorts in Goa that have the same or similar name .
The Leela Cottages at Mandrem - http://leelacottage.com/ - are small little chalet-style huts dotted about a coconut grove . The lovely beach - Mandrem - is a fifty-metre walk away through a little gate .
The cottages are colourful and quaint , decorated with lovely antique furniture and paintings . Our cottage had a lovely four-poster bed and wooden floors . Unlike most beach huts , these are air-conditioned . There was a lockable wooden cupboard in ours as well as a writing desk , two chairs and a table - maybe some floor seating with cushions would have made more sense and maximised the use of the area near the nice large windows that overlook the adjacent coconut grove and then the beach and the sea right after .
The bedlinen was clean . Sheets were not replaced every day but when we asked for a change the attendant was prompt enough .
The bathrooms are basic but clean for the most part - my critter-averse boyfriend would beg to disagree - he spent most of our two days there in fear of the resident frogs ( I thought they were cute - if far too prone to leaping about ! ) .
Breakfast ( included in the price ) was very basic and never varied - two slices of toast , a scrambled egg and coffee . But the good thing is that the attendant would rustle this up for you anytime of the morning .

Problems -

For the price - Rs. 2,500/- per night - we were paying , we never had an experience removed from that of a regular and far cheaper beach hut because the air-conditioner never worked - because of the problems with electricity there it stayed on for a maximum of a minute and then promptly conked out again . If we had known about this problem we would have worked out a non-A/C rate with the owner - we paid full-rate as we hadn't thought that this would happen and the owner absolutely refused to re-negotiate the rate when we were paying up at the end .

The water pressure in the showers was abysmal and there wasn't an option to switch to a bucket . I understand that the structures are temporary keeping in mind the CRZ regulations but water is a basic requirement - bathing was very difficult - trying to get the sand and soap off in that thin spray of hard water was quite a task !

There was just the one lackadaisical attendant who needed far too much prodding for getting the simplest task done - but this attitude may just have been because we are brown , unlike most of the visitors from overseas .
The bigger annoyance was all his friends coming to the coconut grove and hanging out there - it is uncomfortable to laze in one of the hammocks or sit in the garden chairs when there is a noisy group of men horsing around next to you .

In the end , the cottages stand out for their cute-cute looks and their charming and funky decor but the area of Morjim-Mandrem-Ashvem has a huge range of accomodation options and you could do far better .
