“Great Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2014

Location and Value for money. The menu is varied. There is an alcarte menu. And three set menus that include starter, main and dessert. ranginf from 12.90 euro, 14,90, euro to 20 euro. My sons and I had the 14,90 option the choice was varied and the food "tres bon"!

“Close to the station, average brasserie fayre”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2014

Don't expect haute cuisine. It's a family friendly meeting place with a basic menu. The Formula de midi is cheap and cheerful under 10 euros.
The chips were very greasy but the ham and pork chop were tasty. We overheard other customer praising the cheeseboard but hey it Normandy so you would expect it to be good.
The cheesecake was a big surprise GORGEOUS!
It was a convenient stop on the way to the port of Cherbourg. Traditional building with nice old photos around the wall.
Having only one toilet meant a permanent queue.
Would I go again? probably not, I would seek another café bistro in the vicinity

“An Escapade Well Worth Missing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2014

This was our second holiday with our daughter, her husband and children, so, as in September 2013, we called in at L'Escapade for lunch on our way to get on the boat at Ouistreham.
To be fair, the first visit was not too bad, we were outside on the terrace and although the service was generally slow, it was just about acceptable with the inflated price.
With the second visit (1st week in July 2014) it was pouring with rain hence eating outside was not an option.
As we were getting seated there were about six or eight tables with French people whose meals were at various stages of completion.
There must have been ten minutes passed before the sole waiter turned up with menus and a further five minutes for him to produce the wine list.
We were left about ten minutes more before our order was taken.
At this stage we asked if we could have a high chair for the smaller of the two children and were offered the only one in the place - it was filthy, had no tray with it, and it was impossible to release the harness buckle. The only way to put kiddies in there was to slide them in !
Another ten minutes and the first of the starters appeared followed by another two, served by a waiter not seen previously.
My daughter was quick to note that there was no spoon with her soup, and asked the waiter for one before he left. There was no chance of misunderstanding as my daughter was raised and educated in France, and returned to the UK when she was 18 to attend university.
He acknowledged the request and said he would be back with a spoon.
He returned five minutes later with my starter but no spoon, only an apology.
The fiasco returned with service of the main courses. I forgot to mention that along the way, about twenty minutes after our arrival a party of about a dozen Americans sat down. Some of them were served apperitives and starters whilst we were still awaiting our main courses.
Having finished the main courses we decided we hadn't got enough time to wait for desserts, so my daughter and I confronted the waiter, told him what a pitiful shambles it all was and settled the bill at a reduced price. This was about an hour and a quarter after we arrived!
As other guests have said, there appeared to be no form of management, just a couple of youngsters of 18 or 20 years old naturally lacking in organisation.

To sum it up :
I'm confident that health and safety officials would condemn the place for a host of reasons :

The "retro" appearance is ideal for concealing the dirt. All of it is grubby, we also noticed that both cutlery and glasses were not particularly clean, tables were shoddy/dirty and chairs ripped.
The toilet, which stinks, is situated right next to the kitchen opening which does not look particularly clean, either. Even basic hand washing facilities are lacking.
Service is pathetic, not necessarily the fault of the individuals concerned so much as a lack of man power and direction.

in short, I don't think we'll risk missing the boat next year !!

“Dont stop here!!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2014

Attracted by the old style French music from within and the 40's/50's style deco we hoped for an authentic French culinary experience. Sadly it never happened. Aperitifs arrived WITH the first course. Not a hanging offence of course and the portions were bountiful though of very average quality, but the "rare" pork entrecote was unacceptable. The situation was aggravated by the waiter's absolute indifference. No apologies were proffered for this nor for the overcooked french fries which came instead of the requested mashed potato. The pork was actually pink on the outside and raw when cut. At no stage did anyone enquire about our meal satisfaction.....indifferent to the end. Wont be back, Fawlty Towers seems a better option....at least a bit of caustic wit assured....our waiter's face remained expressionless throughout the evening. Sorry I didnt check Trip Advisor beforehand as our experience seems to have been a repeat performance.

“Good French food.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2014

Have stayed here several times before. It is basically clean and tidy and there is a good evening menu. Good central location in Carentan. Easy free parking and opposite the train station.

The Plat du Jour is usually excellent and worth considering. If you are not sure what it says, ask, and they will do their best to explain.

Good place to stay when visiting the D Day beaches, Bayeux, or just a family beach holiday. Very central.
