“A very nice week”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

We stayed at hostal varadero for one week in August. We had a very good time. The room was very clean and big enough for us (3 people) with a balcony facing the harbour, and a bathroom with a small shower and a very small sink. The room had no nightstands, but there was a "closet" big enough to put all the stuff we needed. Our bed was comfortable(not easy to find a comfortable bed in a hotel with less then 3 stars) and was big that could fit at least 3 people, but there was also an extra bed for the child. Air conditioning was very quiet and the satellite tv worked fine. There also was a safe deposit box in the room.
The check in was fine, the lady showed us everything (pool-restaurant) and then helped us carrying the luggage to our room because the room was on another building, (one minute walking distance from the main building), near the pool. She was very nice.
The first evening we had a problem: the shower drain was clogged, but the reception sent immediately a technician and the problem was solved in less then 10 minutes!
The pool area is very nice and clean. They had a BBQ on Saturday night in the pool area and the food was very good, and not expensive.
Breakfast in the morning was very good, many things to eat and drink.
All of the staff was very hospitable, friendly, nice and helpful in every circumstance.
Porto Petro is a small village, but there were many good restaurant, and I think restaurant Varadero was one of them ( I had the best paella there). There is a small quiet beach at only 10min walking distance from the hotel where the water is crystal clear and it's not as crouded as Mondrago or Cala d'Or. We had a very good time there!
I definitely would go back to hostel varadero because it has everything I need for a vacation, and I racommand this hostel to see that area of the island.

Enjoyed a week in July at this lovely hotel. We booked a room with a terrace and were rewarded with lovely views of the harbor. The room was a good size, very clean with a very comfortable bed. Used the air conditioning at night and found it very quiet and efficient. My only small complaint about the room was the size of the wash hand basin. It is very small and every time I washed my face I manged to soak my feet and the floor.
The staff were all very nice and helpful. Breakfast was very good and the dining room lovely and clean.
The pool is actually across the road from the hotel. We used it on two occasions and found it very relaxing with no difficulty getting a sun lounger with shade. We also ate at the pool and found the food very good and value for money.
Porto Petro is a charming small village and enjoyed wandering around the harbor watching the boats coming and going. Not much of a night life - just lots of restaurants and bars to watch the world go by- suited me fine.
Found a lovely beach to swim about 10 minutes walk away. Were there almost every day snorkeling and swimming. The water is very clean and the beach was perfect. Did a couple of trips on the glass bottomed catamarans which call into the harbor. Had two lovely trips - take the swimming gear and the beer was very cheap.
All in all a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday and would recommend the Varadero for a holiday

Room Tip: get a room with a terrace - shame not to admire the view

Nice hotel, agree with previous reviewers that the computer generated images on the website should now be removed and replaced with true photographs, the reality wont be a problem!

Breakfast was very good, everywhere in the hotel was very clean, I didnt bother with the aircon or tv so cant comment.

On arrival we were told our room wasnt ready until the next day so we had to stay the first night and not unpack and would be moved the following morning, the room we had that night was in the building at the back and was small and basic however we moved to a junior suite as per booking the following day and this was just fine, it was a pain having to move and drag all the cases to and from the buildings and up and down the stairs but it wasnt the end of the world.

We booked half board and after the 3rd day of lamb and fish (I dont eat lamb or fish) had to ask for something else as we had to go and eat elsewhere or I had the starter salad only. The manager helped out and said he would rectify this and change the menu from either lamb or fish and the next night they did, great BBQ food on the saturday and then on the Sunday....only paella, seafood paella and they couldnt do a meat or veg alternative so we had to take the family to eat out again.

Pool was never too busy, always beds available.

All in all was enjoyable, as previous reviews have said with a bit of fine tuning it could be great.

Special prasie for Maty the receptionist and the lady with the blonde curly hair at the pool bar who were both great and very helpful.

Room Tip: Junior Suite rooms are nice

This is a really nice place but the web site descriptions are a little misleading to say the least .The room we given for 2 adults and a 16yr old was tiny, yes we booked standard room (as we were told again and again when trying to change it !!!!) but we could not get into the wardrobe without moving the beds.My daughters bed was pushed between the wall and our bed with no space around it .After asking several times to move rooms we gave up ,the receptionist during the day is less than helpful and rude..Lots of other staff really hard working especially .Lots of positives about this place its very clean and wonderful pool area but web site photos and descriptions are misleading Sorry.

What a shame... It's a fabulous location, and the originality of the hostel has certainly the potential to be superb, some staff like Matty, the other receptionists and Octavia, the PR guy are working really hard at trying to cover up the poor management and sadly grumpy unprofessionalism of others (I would include the owner in that). Forget Varadero 'world'- just get each component right first- Restaurant over priced and dreadful service. We would, however stay in the hostal again if they could only just get their act together. Get the piccies off the internet- they are NOT accurate.

Room Tip: ask for a room in the separate block as the rooms in the main hostel have very limited availabilty o...

The room smelled of rotten drains and the shower is a health hazard.
The booking system is rubbish and they often double book rooms. Then having to relocate people with no compensation. They have no idea of customer service and the manager is rude. Save yourself a lot of anguish and stay elsewhere.
