“A stopover with a difference”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

We stayed here for a longer than normal stopover, two nights for some well earned rest before continuing our journey. And what a good choice for a longer stop. Excellent setting some 5km off the main road, easy to find as its entrance is well signed on the right hand side of the road before you enter Ghanzi travelling from the east ( Gabarone). The road up to the camp is sandy and rocky in parts but not difficult in our 2WD vehicle as long as you are careful. Main building set out as the pub, small bar area, outside seating for meals, and a back room complete with pool table! This building overlooks the waterhole where the ranch game frequently drink. And a very nice swimming pool, very cold in September but exceedingly refreshing. The accommodation is of course meru tents on raised concrete platforms with cold water and powerful hot water shower, flushing toilet, electricity, all modern conveniences for tented accommodation. Even a kettle supplied with tea and coffee and a lockable security box. Each has a good sized patio area out front with seating to enjoy the views over woodland. They are set reasonably well apart to keep any noise from neighbours to a minimum. Walking the grounds one afternoon was a pleasant couple of hours spotting eland, kudu, duiker and other gazelle game and these can be frequently seen between the tents and at the waterhole.
Breakfast consisted of buffet for juice, tea, coffee and cereals. Hot breakfast was cooked, eggs, bacon, toast, all freshly cooked. Evening meals were primarily game based, all delicious and considering you are very likely to eat there and not drive the 5km to town, still very reasonably priced at around Rand65 for mains and only 15 for a Windhoek beer.

After staying at the camp for over a month and travelling around botswana I realised there was no where better to stay in the area. Everyone who worked there were extremely friendly and enjoyed a good laugh when it came to having some drinks in the bar at night! Food was always amazing and never waiting long for a meal. Very clean and well kept rooms and facilities. The guides were very knowledgeable about the wildlife and local area. Extremely reasonable prices. Very sad to not be there any more and will definately return!

Thakadu bush camp is a lovely out of the way camp where I stopped off on my travels around southern Africa.
Perfect for game viewing and they also run 'bushmen walks' where you can learn about the wildlife and how the bushmen live.
The owners Chris and Jeanette made my stay very welcoming and comfortable.
The food is great and the staff are equally as nice. With the restaurant/bar being next to Thakadu's 'pan' you can sit and enjoy a meal and drinks only meters from grazing Eland/Kudu/Ostrich etc.
I will definately do another tour of southern Africa, even if it is just to stay at Thakadu again!

The road were a bit bad for motorcycles, very sandy. The camp is clean and deep in the Kalahari Bush. Staff is very friendly. The food was good, but a bit pricey for what you get. Wild animals were close to the bar area. Tents are private and clean. Campsites are very nice and clean.

thakadu game farm is the ideal overnight location on the windhoek to maun route. it is 2km before ghanzi from the border, 3km up a well maintained sand and rock track. they have opened a butchery in the thatched opening to thakudu, well advertised on the main road into the town. on the route in i saw kudu and eland making their way to the waterhole. the reception is in the bar and restuarant, no better place to observe game which also includes warthog, springbok and ostrich.

the owners and staff make you feel at home straight away. they have a hands-on approach to front of house, kitchen and game farm management, which can be shared and observed from the bar. the food is excellent. i had kudu steak and fresh veg for dinner accompanied by a little-known potatoe dish caled chips!!! the english breakfast in the morning was superb.

i camped, 55pula per person per night is really good value. there are around 6 campsites with an electricity point and south african plug to charge up your bits and pieces. there are also braai pits, an overhead light and a freshwater tap. first class facilities for camping. each campsite is at least 30m or more away from the others and i drifted away to sleep easily to the sounds of the thakadu bush.

owners chris and natalie are great company, interested in what you have to say, even though they've been doing it for 10 years and have heard it all before. wish i knew how to use a camera, the silouhette of an eland through the fork of a tree at night would have made a great shot.

the nuts and bolts ablutions have been very thoughtfully fitted out and the bucket showers are brill. nice walk around the grounds if you feel like stretching your legs before a glass of cheers.

the mix of a few locals, an aussie kalahari desert lion whisperer and some other campers made for a relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable stay. i'll be back!!

I stayed at Thakadu for 2 nights on my trip up North and I am glad I made the right choice! I had one of the thatched cottages instead of camping and I found the prices to be very reasonable.

What really made this place a wonderful experience for me was the helpfulness and consideration of the staff. I was on a bit of a whirlwind tour as I had only come to Ghanzi for 2 nights in order to see a bit more of Botswana but the staff at Thakadu arranged a variety of activities for me and I managed to do quite a lot in my short time there. They have an arrangement with the local bushmen so you can often go and see a traditional dance of be taken on an early morning bushwalk.

Aside from this the place is outstanding owing to its water hole which attracts a variety of animals - I saw eland, kudu, ostrich and black wilderbeast in my short time there. The water hole is only about 15 meters from the edge of the bar so you get a really good view.

If you are looking for a place to stay where you can see and hear large mammals whilst in your tent at night and the stars soar in abundance overhead then this is the place for you :-)

Oh I should also mention that the menu looked great. I am vegetarian and so had a number of lovely things to eat here but I think for all the meat eaters out there the dining will be top notch - eland steak, gemsbok steak, kudu liver, warthog curry - i don't think you can go far wrong. As well as that they have wi-fi and a well stocked bar.

Our accomadation was excellent. We love to camp out in tents and this is the best place for that. We know that we never need to book ahead for campsites as there are plenty to choose from and always something available. We love the food. One of the reasons we returned for a second time, the menu has many wonderful dishes to choose and whatever we get is always delicious. Our waitress was very busy with several other full tables and we still got our dinner quickly and with a smile. The customer service is alway exemplory. We really enjoy our stay at Thakadu every time and always reccommend to friends. We are true die hard adventurers, we have traveled all of Europe by way of motorbike and camping. This time in Africa we went o Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and our next stop is the CKGR. Then on to Maun and Zambia. Thakadu is the perfect place for the outdoorsman, as we are, and is the only place we want to stay when we come through Ghanzi!
