“Lovely setting on the Med”
Reviewed October 22, 2010

Stayed 5 nights toward end of their "summer" season - beautiful setting right on the sea, beach right in front. Hotel provides chairs, lounges, towels. Paid for upgrade in the renovated main building (used to be a sanitarium) with beautiful views from the terrace. Hotel sits along the boardwalk but feels quite private. However, can walk to many restaurants, shops along the waterfront. Wine, cava bodegas within driving distance - excellent tours. Will happily go back!

After two weeks traveling around the northeast of Spain, my partner and I were really looking forward to getting a beachside rest before moving on towards Barcelona. Service from the get go was immaculate. Our car and suitcases were swiftly taken care of. Check-in was polite and professional. I booked a Premier Deluxe Room which promised a "frontal seaview from the terrace" and so I was surprised to learn that my room faces a lake and the sea is only visible for those taller than 9'10" (Please see pictures). I complained to the front desk and they immediately upgraded me to a duplex suite facing the ocean, which I thought was a nice touch. Still, I thought it was deceptive of them showing a picture of the ocean when all you can see is the lake.

Apart from the minor mishap however, this hotel was virtually flawless. The security guarding the entrance to the hotel from the boardwalk was extremely helpful in telling us a little bit about the area. The breakfast was also a wonderful plus. However, please beware that they have two rates for the buffet breakfast. One is just for the cold selections while the other include the hot selections.

Certainly this hotel has a lot going for its five-star claim: nice building, cleanliness, friendly to very friendly staff, quiet and terrace restaurant with beach access.
My wife, daughter and myself had requested two double connecting rooms; we like space and privacy while on holidays.
However, at first we did not get connecting rooms; understandable if the hotel is fully booked.
What did annoy though, is that one of the rooms did not feature a double door as all the other rooms apparently do, so, with the proximity of the piano bar, finding sleep was not easy.
On Monday, after two nights, we were 'upgraded' to connecting rooms - at 50€ extra per night - fine.
What we discovered though was the presence of a kitchen below one of the rooms, with noisy trolleys riding up and down until 01:00 a.m. and back after about 05:00 a.m.
My wife being a light sleeper, I complained about the noise but without much success; at first the problem did not seem to exist; afterward we turned down another move: who wants to pack and unpack twice during a week's stay?
Buffets - breakfast & dinner - were NEVER hot, but lukewarm at best, the reason being the lack of a so-called 'bain-marie' system to keep the food warm.
Food was expensive anyway: e.g. filet steak 28€ - so far so good. Want fries with that? 7€ extra; want some green salad too? Another 7€ extra - get the picture?
As a conclusion I would say: as far as the rooms stories are concerned, we probably ran out of luck - such things happen.
The way the 'upgrade' was handled and the price for side dishes and food and drinks in general, left a bad aftertaste.
Oh yeah, final remark: the parking fee was 19€ per night, and, no, you were not allowed to sleep in the car for that price ;-)

This hotel seems like it is still trying to find its own personality, with an odd mixture of architectural styles and an odd mixture of guests, ranging from older couples on a romantic break, to wealthy northern and eastern European families, to French businessmen. The vast reception area is impressive and sleek, but the welcome not particularly warm. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped, but the small-ish pool is situated on the roof rather than by the sea and lacks in atmosphere. The breakfast buffet was good, but the evening ones extremely limited for a five-star hotel. The pool restaurant is good, but prices are high throughout the hotel. The parking fee is exorbitant. El Vendrell town is family-friendly but far from picturesque and the beach is nothing special for Spain. The spa did seem popular.

I was rather concerned that we had made the wrong choice of hotel for a weeks vacation with our ten year old son, worrying that there would not be enough for him to do. I was wrong to worry as the hotel and location was absolutely superb if like us you don't want British bars, Volley ball competitions in the pool and Karaoke. The hotel is set right on a really lovely beach with not a high rise block for miles. the town of Calafell is to the left of the hotel and although not the most attractive town in Spain, the sea front has character, is safe and is full of reasonably priced tapas restaurants full of locals and Spanish tourists when we were there. We had wonderful tapas in L'ancor, Guiseppes and Pastania ( May have got name wrong). There is also a wonderful Indian restaurant called Spice. I would not normally eat Indian food in spain but this place was unbelievably good. The onion bahjis the best and most fresh I have ever tasted.
Back to the hotel, the room was clean, modern and very quiet. The buffet breakfast was superb and the staff as usual for an SPG establishment very professional and friendly.
The only regret I had was not booking for longer than a week.
By the way, if your looking for nightlife don't book here as no disco for miles, the only music was in the piano bar. Another reason we are coming back.

the meridien ra hotel and spa is a great place to de-stress and relax. There isn't too much to do in the town of El Vendrell and the resort and the beach in front are probably the highlights. Its a great place to visit over a weekend . The view from the room balconies of the central water pool is amazing, the staff is helpful and speaks English (which, if you don't know Spanish, is very important) and the beach is clean and gorgeous on a sunny day. Did not try any of the spa treatments but the therapeutic pool on the top floor is great and very relaxing. The food is good but very few vegetarian options. Overall, a good weekend stay if you are looking to soothe your senses
