This was a good place to stop for supper on the long drive from London to West Cornwall. The food was really delicious and interesting. The service was efficient (in fact our food arrived more quickly than in most restaurants of that calibre, which suited us but might not work if you're planning a long, romantic dinner) and the host was very good at keeping chatty regulars/locals happy whilst not ignoring new guests like us. I also laud their endeavours to use locally sourced food.
The place doesn't have much atmosphere, which is a shame as the food deserves better. It's in a charmless basement, with simple furnishings. My main quibble though is with the price. You have to have at least 2 courses at £25 per person. That's quite steep even by London standards and it is especially unfair on vegetarians as their food costs far less and is far less filling. I had a lovely veg jambalya the ingredients of which must have cost an eighth of the huge piece of (wonderfully cooked) pork my companion ate. If they looked at their pricing structure, I'd definitely consider returning and recommending to others. But for the current prices I expect bells and whistles in excellent surroundings.
