“Fantastic Resort”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

After spending 16 days from Sapa to Ho Chi Minh my partner and I decided to take 7 days off in a resort. We could not have been happier with our choice of the Pandanus. We stayed in a Garden Bungalow which was very large with a lovely outside area for sitting and enjoying the view of the magnificent gardens. The pool area, beach (very clean) restaurants, spa and general area of the hotel was a welcome surprise and the staff were excellent with their English and customer service.

After a 3 night stopover in Dubai and another 3 night stopover in Ho Chi Minh City rushing around seeing all of the sights, we were very happy to find this hotel encourages relaxation from check-in to the all too inevitable check out.
The receptionists were lovely and we met Rosslini who is the Guest Relation Officer she made sure we were looked after and taken care of throughout our 7 nights at Pandanus. She also takes the tours and the tai chi at the pool in the mornings. We looked forward to seeing her every day and she certainly helped us enjoy our holiday. If you need anything she will be able to organise it for you! Nothing was too much trouble for her.
The manager was available at any time but also had a meet and greet for all guests every night where you can have a wine or a beer and some cheese. We only went the once but it is good to know he is accessible if you need him.
We booked a garden bungalow and loved the quiet surroundings in the gardens with the sound of the waves in the background. We spent quite alot of our evenings just lying on the loungers outside our bungalow reading books and having a wee nightcap!
The garden lay out and attention to detail is beautiful. Every day the gardeners were planting and trimming there was always something new to look at.
We had breakfast in the restaurant and there were lots of choices for breakfast regardless of which continent you came from. We loved trying something different every day. the staff were very attentive, although it was a buffet, and were constantly clearing away and offering coffee or teas.
I did a cookery class which was fun (especially with the language problem) and once I had cooked everything my husband came to join me and there was more food than we could manage. For the class and the food it worked out to be about £17.00.
Both my husband and I had a Vietnamese massage and pedicure his was outdoors down by the pool. I also had a salt scrub. The spa facilities are excellent and the ladies in the spa were lovely and very good at what they do. For both of us for 4 hours of spa treatments we paid about £60 an amazing price for what we got.
We did have a couple of problems with our bungalow, 1 where the aircon started leaking and another where the bathroom room got locked from the outside. 1 call to reception and we had at least 2 staff in our room sorting out the problem, all very efficient.
It is a bit far from the main drag but the hotel does offer transport twice nightly to the main strip where you can get an ATM as well as try some new restaurants or do a little bit of shopping.
They also offer morning trips on the minibus to the local fish market on the beach at Mui Ne which takes in the landing of the fish( it was so interesting we went twice) you also walk through the small town of Mui Ne stopping off at the temple and then onto the market. It was great to see all locals selling their wares a real eye opener for us but good fun and experience of the local way of life.
During the day we relaxed by the pool or on the beach. there were always plenty loungers and the pool was the biggest we have seen at a resort of this size. The pool staff were very helpful.
The beach goes on for miles and the staff do a clean up of the area in front of the hotel.
We are more than happy to recommend this hotel based on our requirements and experience. we would like to compliment the Manager on such a well run resort with such lovely friendly and attentive staff.

There are also little garage type restaurants just on the main road outside the hotel where you can go for a meal or something to drink. We tried a couple of them and they were all pretty much the same. They do decent food at good prices and my husband was very happy to get a pint of Saigon Red for VND11000 about 30p!
We had our laundry done at the little hut opposite the hotel entrance and it was VND50000 per kilo about £1.60.

Room Tip: We booked a garden bungalow and got number 102 which is the closest to the sea. It was ideal.

Beautiful grounds very well designed and kept, sadly the rooms (we stayed in a bungalow) feel a little tired, they could be easily updated with new linens and more upmarket guest provisions, a coffee machine/plunger would give you a reason to sit on the balcony and enjoy the view. The food was disappointing and the resort generally lacked any vibe or atmosphere.

Sue,

Thank you for your comments. I'm happy that you thought our grounds are beautiful and that our location is good. We have thirty full-time gardeners working to keep our gardens as beautiful as they can possibly be. However, after praising our grounds as being well designed and kept, your comment that the hotel lacks any vibe or atmosphere was curious.

I have sent your comments regarding our linen to the housekeeping manager and your comments regarding our food to our executive chef. We do attempt to keep our linen as new and fashionable as we possibly can, so I'm disappointed that you felt it was not 'updated' or 'upmarket'.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a "coffee machine/plunger". We do provide a coffee and tea pot with cups, along with a supply of tea and coffee, in each room.

I'm sorry that we did not meet your expectations regarding the 'vibe' and the food. I do hope that you generally enjoyed your stay with us, even though you felt that we 'lacked' in some areas.

Pandanus Resort in Mui Ne is a beautifully landscaped resort offering it's guests the perfect opportunity for rest and relaxation in tranquil surroundings.

The rooms are quite spacious and clean, with good bathrooms and amenities. Bungalows are located a short distance from both the pool and the ocean, and are extremely comfortable. Outdoor massage is available adjacent to the pool also.

The restaurant is very large and provides an excellent breakfast comprising an extensive selection of both Asian and Western favourites. The lunch and dinner menu's are similarly attractive.

Service is excellent, and clearly the management pays a great deal of attention to making the guest feel welcome and comfortable. The staff are bright, friendly and efficient.

The resort boasts two bars, one of which hosts wine and cheese gatherings for the guests every evening except Sunday. An outdoor barbecue is held by the pool on Saturday evenings.

Pandanus Resort is located in Mui Ne, and should not be confused with other resorts which use Mui Ne as their address. This "strip" of resorts is in fact in a place called Ham Tien, about seven kilometres from Pandanus. The resort provides a free shuttle to Ham Tien, and it takes about fifteen minutes by taxi.

I consider Pandanus to be the perfect place to recover from the stresses and pressures of life in the city.

Great attention to detail has been given to this resort's design, right down to bonsai bougainvillia, a lotus pond, and pathways and lawns that indulge the senses of one's feet.
There are many ways to 'do' Vietnam, and I prefer to visit a few locations to get a feel for the rythym of life in them. For me, Vietnam's beauty is in its people and Pandanus resort has really friendly, helpful staff. It is really close to a charming fishing village and the resort provides bikes to get there. If that is too adventurous, local buses that pass every 20 minutes go all the way to the city pf Phan Thiet for the equivalent of about 80 cents Australian.
My wife is a chef in an Australian five-star resort, so she really knows food. We visited the kitchen at Pandanus resort and saw that they were very well organised, well equipped, well staffed and immaculately clean. Little wonder then, that the food at Pandanus is absolutely sensational. On our last night, we tried the regional specialty which is a six dishes which are first eaten dry and then mixed with a consomme. It was one of the most fantastic meals I have ever eaten , so fresh and fragrant.
It is absolutely worth paying more to eat at the resort, as the food is vastly superior to anything available at the street side eateries serving turtles, frogs and greasy noodle dishes.
The service of this resort proved itself when one of our daughters fell ill. There is nothing scarier than a sick child so far from home.
Pandanus resort provided a charming nurse who had our girl recovering within hours. The nurse made regular checks on our girls health, and provided appropriate medication, at no charge.
By the way, the gym at Pandanus is very well equipped. It is air conditioned, in the shade and provides cold filtered water, and every bit of gear for the keenest body shaper.
I have seen some silly criticism of the General Manager's receptions. He provides free beer and several varieties of wine for an hour. What's there to complain about! It was great fun and very informative.
The resort's location away from the tourist strip is one of its greatest advantages.
If you look carefully on the beach, you'll see a few people selling fresh coconuts and cheap, well-made jewellery. You will need to approach them, as they are not touts, merely local people trying to scratch a living.

GENERAL
Very large Resort on 25 acres, beautiful landscaped gardens. Rooms (134) are spread out on the premises in small buildings. Everything is well kept.
LOCATION
The Resort is really in Mui Ne at the beach, but Mui Ne is about 7 kilometers from Ham Tien and nearly 25 kilometers from Phan Thiết. They have a shuttle bus (only 11 passengers) that takes you to Ham Tien (not a village but a 10 km tourist strip) at 5.30 pm and 6.30 pm. Many restaurants and shops in Ham Tien. A large shuttle bus leaves from Ham Tien to the Resort at around 9.45 pm. A taxi ride (one way) will cost you $ 5,-. So you are in a really quiet place only a taxi ride from outside entertainment. Google maps will show you the correct place and distances, but a bit too much sea, it looks like the Resort is on a strip in the water, but that is actually not true.
WHEN TO GO OR NOT TO GO
A word of caution, it is mentioned before, during the fishing season there is a fishing market on the beach, about 500 meters upwind. Worth a visit but causing a real nuisance, it attracts many, many flies and they will bother you at the poolside. Also be aware of the small sandflies. Best season as we were told is from late September until May because the fishermen won't be there. But all of this is beyond the control of the Resort. It is annoying but not a spoiler.
In the weekend the Resort is crowded with Vietnamese families from HCMC, be aware that their culture is different and their way of living might be causing a lot of noise.
RECEPTION
The reception area is a large high roofed building, all open and very beautiful. A small shop and always live music from a local band to welcome new guests.
FACILITIES
A very large restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner (try to be seated right underneath a fan), a large gym, a tennis court. A great swimming pool with another bar and restaurant. A spa with 2 massage beds near the pool. A nice white clean beach. WiFi is acceptable. Overall worth 4+ stars.
RESTAURANT
At breakfast a large choice of Continental and Asian food. Lunch and dinner is decent. Burgers and sandwiches at the pool.
ROOMS
We stayed in the superior room (30 sqm), coffee and tea making facilities, safe, minibar and balcony. Bathroom with a great shower, beds are ok. The superior rooms are in larger buildings (3 stories) a short walk from the pool and beach. Bungalows are more near the pool and that could get noisy.
So if you go here in the right season and probably not during the weekend, it is a very comfortable resort, somewhat remote. Staff and management are really great.

I didn't like this place. I don't like to give negative reviews but I reckon there is some misleading information out there about this place.

The GM of the place said it was 1K from Mui Ne and he is right but: Mui Ne stretches along about 20K of coastline and they are 1K from the town but about 10K from the area tourists want to be (restaurants, bars, etc). So it's a $10 taxi each way.

The beach at the resort doesn't look anything like the photos, more of a mud flat. It's pretty rough water and not suitable for swimming.

The food was pretty ordinary as was the cleanliness of the kitchen.

The rooms were okay but look a little dated, the shower jet went straight forward so it either hit you in the face or bounced off the wall to get you wet.

The pool was great.

I found the resort to be isolated, overpriced and it gave bad service. We were planning to stay 6 nights but booked out after one and went to Lotus Village.

If all you want to do is sit by the pool and eat at the resort restaurant you might like this place but if you want an experience of Vietnam you won't get it here. There are far better places than this at a better or equivalent price that offer some variety.

Room Tip: Most rooms are a long way from the pool, if you can afford to splash a little more cash get poolside...

SteveMuiNe_Vietnam, Manager at Pandanus Resort, responded to this review, October 24, 2012
Cosmowayne,

Thank you for your comments. I'm sorry that your stay with us was not as pleasant as you would have liked.

Whenever there are specific comments or complaints, we use them as a guideline to see what we can do better. You have made a number of comments that are not specific, but to which I will try to reply.

You stated that you wanted to give a negative review because of "misleading information". I'm not quite sure to which misleading information you may be referring, but if it concerns our location, your comments were inaccurate. We are in located in Mui Ne ward only one kilometer from a town of 22,000 people on one side and adjacent to the orange sand dunes on the other side. To say that we are "in the middle of nowhere" is quite misleading. There are more than a dozen local restaurants on the street in front of the resort and between our resort and both the town and the sand dunes, so guests do not need to find transportation to dine outside.

Your comment that Mui Ne "stretches along about 20 kilometers of coastline" is also misleading and inaccurate. Mui Ne ward ends at Rang Beach, just three kilometers from the Pandanus Resort. The tourist strip to which you refer is not in Mui Ne and is not a town at all. It is a strip of hotels, guest houses, shops and restaurants that stretch along a ten-kilometer beachfront in Ham Tien ward.

You commented that (Ham Tien) is "where tourists want to be". However, most of our guests disagree and tell me that they prefer our resort to the myriad of smaller resorts in Ham Tien. If one is going to a resort destination to mingle with tourists and to party all night, then you are correct. However, many people 'want to be' in places in other countries where they can mingle with local people, see local culture, and use the recreational facilities inside their resorts.

You stated that our beach "doesn't look anything like the photos" and is "more of a mud flat". This comment is very curious, as our beach is a white sandy beach without any mud. As to whether it looks anything like the photos, if you visit beaches regularly, you will notice that they change with the tides and the winds. However, you can see many photos of our beach taken by guests and posted on our website at different times of the year. They don't always look identical, but they always show our beach for what it is; white sand.

Your comment that the "cleanliness" of our kitchen is "ordinary", insinuates that it is not clean. Our kitchen is inspected regularly by government health officials and they have a different opinion, as we always pass muster.

As for the shower in your room, the flow of water is regulated by the nozzle. If one turns the nozzle to another direction, the flow changes from solid to misty and may be regulated to one's taste. Perhaps the previous guest regulated the nozzle to emit a solid stream of water.

You commented that the hotel was "overpriced", yet we have just received an award by a European tourist organization as the "Best Value" in Vietnam.

I apologize if any of our staff provided bad service. You were not specific as to what you meant, so I am not sure to which staff or department you were referring.

Again, I apologize that your stay was not to your liking and I hope that the rest of your Phan Thiet visit was pleasant.
