“We're in love with this place and these folks!”
Reviewed August 6, 2009

My husband and I first discovered the Lake Shore Salzburger Hof Resort over 20 years ago, and fell in love with it immediately, as did our children. Since then we have made 38 trips to this wonderful place - sharing it with parents, friends, and grandchildren. Our daughter even chose to have her honeymoon there! There are so many reasons why this place calls us back year after year - the beauty of the area, the amazing quality of the food, the spotless facilities, and most of all the warmth, friendliness and hospitality of Ann Elsigan and her family. They make each guest feel welcome and special.

The resort is located about 45 miles south of the Superior Provincial Park, so it is easily accessible to excellent hiking, fishing, canoeing, and picnic opportunities. The Elsigan's provide free passes to the park and surrounding beaches. Through the years we have seen bears, moose and even wolves in the park and have put in probably thousands of miles in hikes and boat trips. But always at the end of the day we had the wonderful opportunity to return to the Salburger Hof for dinner, a glass of wine on the cliff overlooking Lake Superior and Batchawana Island, a visit with the Elsigans and a clean warm bed. No matter how busy and hectic our lives get, we always renew and relax at the Salzburger Hof. We hope to come back again and again for many years.

We found this place through the welcome center in Saulte. Ste. Marie. What a lovely area! The owners offer great hospitality and excellent food. The rooms overlooked Batchawanna Bay and were well kept. It was a pleasure talking with our hosts and the addition of a pass to the nearby provincial park was a nice bonus- I believe the pass costs $100 if bought separately. We will definitely stop here again the next time we circle Lake Superior.

We spent two nights at the Lake Shore Resort, from July 30 until August 1, 2009. The Elsigan family were very helpful and friendly. Our quaint housekeeping studio was clean, comfortable and well equipped with a small kitchen and fridge. The comfortable mattress was much appreciated. The grounds and the view are beautiful and the restaurant was excellent. We'd return to this resort: it's a winner.

We chose to stop at the Salzburger Hof because my husband loves Austrian food. We weren't dissapointed! It was second to none!! The best part, though, was the hospitality. Ann Elsigan and her family, who own and operate the resort treated us like they'd known us for years! Located on the banks of beautiful Lake Superior, the surroundings are wonderfully relaxing after a hectic day (or week) of sightseeing. If you're looking for rustic, calming, out of the ordinary, back to nature, this is the place for you. You won't find fancy soaps in wicker baskets and built in Kleenex dispensers but you will find comfortable beds, clean log chalet rooms, wonderful food and great hospitality...what more is there? We loved it.

The Salzburger Hof has a spectacular view of Batchawana Bay -- that alone is worth a visit. The resort is dated, but immaculate. It has been run by the same family since the 1970s and three generations currently work there. In fact we didn't see anyone who wasn't family. As a result, service is excellent, and the place is well cared for. This corner of Lake Superior is beautiful and wild -- few touristy things. That is a plus for us. Outside the resort is extremely quiet -- surrounded by woods. The restaurant looked quite fine, but we had eaten dinner before arriving. We did have breakfast and that was quite good -- the fact that locals come by is an indication of qualify.

I have to work hard to find a negative. The walls are wood -- log-cabin style which provides little sound deadening. However, the occupants were quiet so that was not an issue. In fact, the other occupants were quiet friendly -- conversations were easily struck up among all of us -- something about the atmosphere.

For those who must be connect there was free Internet at the lodge/restaurant.

They do have a web site at salzburgerhofresort dot com.

End of October 2008

Hello,

The Lake Shore Saltzburgerhof resort was fantastic because of three key, equal ingredients: first is the terrific hospitality and kindness of Mrs. Ann Elsigan's family; second is the wonderful, delightful food; third is the fabulous view of Batchawana Bay, looking out to the North and South Sandy islands in Whitefish Bay (Lake Superior). Mrs. Elsigan has the best whitefish and red cabbage on this side of heaven!

The cabin-like rooms are so private, so clean.

This resort is the perfect place to wind down, relax, escape...

Thank you, Mrs. Elsigan and family for making the trip absolutely the best!

I was lucky enough to accompany two individuals on their vacation this past September. One of whom had been going almost yearly with his family. He invited one of his room mates this year and I was able to go with them. Ann and her family were great! They bent over backward to make sure our every need was met. Everything from suppling a ramp into the cottage to making sure we have enough firewood for the cottage and a supply of her excellent rhubarb jam. The accommodations were first rate, the food in both restaurants excellent quality and the service was outstanding! By the time we left, we felt almost like family. I hope I am lucky enough to go back sometime in the future.
