Had better food from a chippy overpriced and small portions. Great views and lovely surroundings. Will not be going back.

“Rude owner”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2013

Grumpy rude owner that propped up the bar. Food is okay but you'd be better off going to the FIre House in Sowerby Bridge.

“Excellent Location and that's the end of the good bit.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2012

We very rarely get all our family in one place but when we do we like to book a meal together. Being local to the area we thought we would try the Alma for a meal for nine of us. Lucky for the ninth member of our party only eight of us made it.
On entering the place appeared clean, we had a table booked in the dining area through the bar by the pizza oven. The first odd thing we noticed were the menus, they consisted of two sheets of printer paper stapled together with pictures of beer bottles printed around the edges, leading us at first to think they were the drinks list, but no they were a childish cheap attempt at a menu. Trying to decipher them was the next challenge, there was no clear distinction between the starter, mains and desserts, in fact we didn't see any desserts. We discovered that there were only three starters on the menu, pate, mushrooms cooked with gorgonzola cheese, and soup of the day - we were told there was no soup !
Three of our group didn't order a starter as there was nothing they fancied, the others of us ordered the pate and one the mushrooms. The mushrooms were OK, the pate dire, one slice of toast that appeared to be supermarket smart price bread, a bland tasteless lump of pate and a heap of salad in an unidentifiable dressing.
The main courses consisted of two pizzas, two fillet steaks, two fish & chips, two roast diners.
The pizzas were OK, but I had ordered a meat feast, and it lacked both meat and feast, there was only cheese and pepperoni, but it was at least edible.
The fish and chips were eaten, but personally if I had ordered them they would have been sent back. The batter on the fish was black, so were the wedges/chips it seemed as though the fat hadn't been cleaned in years. The fillet steaks were ordered to be cooked medium, one was, one was cremated. The two roast diners were the worst by far, slop, the meat had that much fat on it (see photo) that after it had been removed there was a 3 by 2 inch piece of meat left on one plate, and little more on the other. The Yorkshire pudding was greasy and I was told tasted of dirty fat.
A complaint was made about the quality of the food and the owner did knock the price of one of the steaks and both roast diners off the price of the bill, after she was asked what she was intending to do about the situation.
The table was cleared, no desserts were offered, we paid what was left of the bill and left, never to return.
It wasn't busy, our party were the only diners in the restaurant area (we now know why) so there really was no excuse for the food being so bad, perhaps a change of chef might be a move in the right direction. Also, how on earth do you run out/not have of soup ?

“OK unless you want a late night!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

OK, So we had a terrible experience here. However I will start with some positive aspects to be fair.
The setting of this place is amazing. The views are stunning and the pub building is great. A nice open fire etc. The room we were shown was OK. A double with a Jacuzzi style bath. Although it was just twin beds pushed together.
We booked a nights stay recently and it didn't really work out well. We arrived and did get a warm welcome....from the dog! The customer service was nil. We were informed that we would only get a key to our room and not the front door. The landlady asked us if we would be going out that evening as she would have to let us back in at night. when my husband said yes, she replied, not too late I hope!! As we knew we would be late we asked would she prefer us to find somewhere else to stay and she said yes!!
We have never had this experience happen to us before, it was very odd! Luckily we did have somewhere else to stay, if not we would have to have changed our plans and come home early so as not to be locked out!!!
