Yercaud is not new to me and my wife and we keep visiting Yercaud at least once a year. We started out by staying at the Orchid Suite in Shevaroys hotel which was good value for money a few years ago. Then we moved on to the Lake Forest Hotel which is a part of Club Mahindra Properties and is a very nice place to stay with a retro touch to their rooms, reception and the restaurant.
Then we got a chance to visit The Regent Hill Side, which beats all other places hollow including the GRT which we have heard of the experience from our friends. We visited this wonderful place in end August this year & oh my! What an experience it was!! I shall tell you about the owner Vishu, a little later on but firstly he was kind enough to upgrade our room from Belmont to Sunny Side Up without any extra costs. While all the rooms are really well appointed, the Sunny Side Up is the largest of the 4 rooms and is furnished so well that it will transport you back in time. The cot, the chairs, the lounge chair all 70’s style. The bathroom fixtures are really unique and you will get to see the owner’s sense of humor all around the room including the bathroom with some witty one liners and some framed photographs!!
Secondly, he was kind enough to come near the Yercaud lake in his Mercedes to guide us the way to his resort which was hardly around 0.5kms from the lake and he could have easily asked us to come on our own in our car by guiding us on the phone, but no, he had to come personally to welcome us! It was a very warm gesture.
The entire property is still under development but the central building housing the 4 rooms is ready and is made in a retro way with a working projector from the early days, lamps from yesteryears, and quite a few other items. The restaurant was not yet functional except for hot beverages and yummy toast and eggs. But Vishu is willing to get food packed and served at the restaurant which worked very well for us. So the property and the rooms and the food are all amazing and top notch which you will not find in entire Yercaud. Arguably the best place to stay in Yercaud.
Vishu is a multitalented, multifaceted individual who can hold a conversation about any topic of your interest. While I cannot list all his skills, here are a few that I can remember – Calligraphy expert, PHD in Bonsai & Japanese gardening, Recipe creator, Chef, Automobile buff, Top Cop of Salem (honorary) and many more. While he has around 35-40 skills which he is very good at, he is such a humble person that you will find it hard to believe that he is a millionaire who owns very many businesses. We are the normal IT folk from Bangalore and we were almost the only people apart from 2 other families who were already present and checked out before we did. Vishu is so humble that he spent almost a couple of hours explaining his ideas for the development of his property and how he intends to have a café, and a fully working restaurant serving continental food.
While chatting with him in the restaurant, we go to see an African Grey Parrot which he has trained and also 5 dogs in their own kennels. 2 Labradors, a pug, and a Siberian Husky as well. He loves animals too and was very caring towards them. And as a clincher he gave us a free ride in his Mercedes E and also treated us dinner in Shevaroys restaurant. The next morning, me and wifey were a little late getting ready due to our 2 year old infant. But the great guy that Vishu is, he waited for nearly 40 minutes without having his breakfast and then prepared fresh hot omelets for us as well as for himself and had the breakfast with us. Simple though it was, he treated us to some yummy apricot jam and butter on the toast along with the eggs.
We had a very relaxing 2 days and we will definitely be visiting the place every time we are in Yercaud as we would not want to stay any place else apart from The Regent Hill Side.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- This is the only heritage, boutique, museum, designer, art-deco hotel and resort in Yercaud. Its ambiance and surroundings are breathtaking as it has stunning views of a working coffee plantation. The rooms have individual sit outs for every room and also private lawns. The food is awesome and you can choose the place to have your meal subject to conditions prevailing - either in the alfresco dining restaurant "SWEET RASCAL" or on one of the spacious lawns or choose to have a candle light dinner in the middle of the estate. You can also just relax sipping an exotic mock-tail under the huge Jumbulum tree in the Frangipani garden with all its fragrance galore. It's a place with a sense of serendipity, style and a lot of detailed history. Its ability to truly relax the weary and fatigued traveler is truly fantastic. Much Emphasis is placed on its uniqueness. Traditional perceptions of 5 star luxury are ignored, yet we maintain a spirit of luxury that most hotels can only aspire to. We pride ourselves on the subtle attention to detail which is not immediately noticeable but people can only remember when it is not there. You would probably feel you are only at your friends home, this I say so because you could even walk straight into our kitchen to see us cook. I continue to look for the best of services to provide to the guests, with an emphasis on finding the extraordinary and not the ordinary, a quest which began as a hobby 3 years ago but which is now a passion to bring out the best in India. ... more less
