A lunchtime family meal for four in early January, a wide and varied menu, food was delicious with some less usual dishes -most of the food is locally sourced. Service was extremely slow(but very pleasant) on this occasion, it wasn't clear why as it was not crowded, and the waitresses were very efficient. Easily accessible from the main road yet in lovely and pleaceful location. Interesting ambience and the name itself has an interesting origin.

We turned up on spec at 11.55 and walked in to a deserted bar. After a couple of minutes by the fire, a waitress arrived and explained that although the restaurant was fully booked we could eat in the bar. Within 20 minutes the place was buzzing! I guess the restaurant seats upwards of 60 and is very attractive.Fully booked for Sunday lunch shows how popular this place is. We had a good table in the bar with lovely views to the sea.
The food was very good, a beautifully balanced chicory salad with pear, blue cheese and walnut was fabulous. Two mighty Sunday lunches then appeared. The pork shoulder was a reconstructed mound rather than slices of a joint but delicious and tender. 'All the trimmings' is usually a euphemism for quantity over quality but this was a fantastically satisfying plate of food.
No room for desserts but a bill of just over £40 for two including wine seemed great value to me.
It's worth a detour.

We could not fault anything with either the service, bedrooms, bathrooms or the food - all were excellent! We were in a party of eight following a wedding and were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff. The champagne was well chilled - as were the glasses. Only the day before the wedding I contacted the hotel to ask if we could have canapés with the champagne - they provided them and they were superb! In fact so superb we asked if we could have more 'nibbles' and they produced the most delicious tapas. The dinner was fantastic, the service brilliant and we all had a thoroughly great time! I would definitely recommend the Cook and Barker.

Had lunch here on Monday and was as always outstanding. They do a special offer on a Monday you get two courses for £10.00 which is very good value for money.

Tip - if you go early you will get a lovely seat by the open log fire.
