The Cook & Barker Inn

Absolutely fabulous. Get the 'T' bone if very hungry. One of Northumberlands hidden treasures,
just 4 miles south of Alnwick on the western side of A1. Original in every way from the quarry flagstone floors to the raging winter fires in grates. Book ahead if possible to avoid disappointment.

I purchased a groupon a while ago and have been tireless to reserve a table as its very popular on a Saturday evening, never mind we paid a visit. The restaurant is very old fashioned but with character. The service is prompt and attentitive, we choose from the October seasonal menu.
I choose the advacado with crab which was okay but my wife choose the scallops with black pudding which looked tasty. Main course of slow cooked lamb didn't match up itch the menu description but eventhough it was nice. My wife had the sea bass but only wanted the roasted vegetables without the potatoes but for some reason it was ignored. Followed with the local cheeses and a glass of port. All in all its a nice run out to the countryside from Newcastle to find a gastro pub stock in the middle of nowhere but always full, this has to be a good sign.

Booked the Cook & Barker for one nights B & B + Dinner, (Sept 19th) to break up a journey up north.
Have eaten here before in the bar & really enjoyed the quality food.
Rooms are in an annex at the rear of thge main building, so nice & quite. Very well equipped room with all that you would need, spotlessly clean & lovely big bath room.
Booked into restaurant for 6pm & glad we went early as the place was fully booked later. We could select our Dinner from either Al Carte or the set menu, both with wonderful selection of food, to keep everybody happy. Very helpful staff, even though the place was filling up.
All in a woderful stay in excellent accomadation & wonderful selection of food & an all in price of £140 for two people.
Breakafst was also very good, with excellent choice of food.

Stopped for a couple of nights. Wished it had been more. Pleasantly quiet village just off the A1. Good clean, comfy accomodation in the quiet annex. Good location for visiting NT sites and the coast. The breakfast and evening menus are stunning, with great choice of food which is prepared & presented to a very high standard. The staff are attentive, polite and friendly. We made the mistake of not pre-booking the restaurant, which seems to be fully booked virtually all the time!! Overall, a great place and have already recommended it to several colleagues/friends. Will definitely try to stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms in annex at back will be quietest.

Stayed here Sat 21st July 2012 with a group of girlfriends. Had a bar meal for lunch, the pork baguette £6.90 was fantastic much more than just a sandwich. Room was comfy and clean. Bar staff stayed up into the early hours for us, very friendly & helpful staff.
Lots of choice for breakfast I had the full english which was delicious.
Decided to stay for Sunday lunch in the restaurant. Three courses £16.95 but we opted for just the beef roast £8.90 which was gorgeous. Great service, very popular place but they dont over crowd the dinning room. I would definitely stay here again, £85 for a double room b & b.

The star rating given is purely for the resturant. Eat here to enjoy a meal and a good breakfast but the bedrooms are dirty, tired and in urgent need of refurbishment particularly the bathrooms.
Our friends who were in the next room to us discovered a dirty toilet, uncleaned carpet and questioned whether the bed sheets had been changed before they took up occupation.
Would question how the AA could award a four star rating and it would seem that they need to make an urgent snap inspection to reassess to prevent this establishment living on and charging prices on what must be an outdated and historic rating assessment.

Room Tip: Down stair rooms look out on to a car park with no voile curtains for privacy.
