Reviewed July 29, 2006

We stayed at Castle Salem in Rosscarbery for 4 nights this mid-July and very much enjoyed it. The house, in which there are 3 guest rooms, dates back to 1682. Margaret and her family have been in the B&B business for more than 30 years and know how to make guests feel welcomed. Castle Salem is listed by the „family homes of ireland“ association which is, in my opinion and experience, a good label for good quality B&Bs.

We had the 4-bed family room on the first floor: big, cool and bright. The king size bed was very comfy and the 3 other beds, too soft for adults. But ok for small kids. Apparently, William Penn stayed at Castle Salem too back then as a friend's family owned the property. This might interest american visitors. The small bathroom is shared but that didn't bother us since we were on the road the whole day.

The house is partly built on a wall of a 15th century castle. Margaret let us have a glimpse into the castle which is still in very good shape considering the centuries.

She prepared us wonderful irish breakfasts and told us stories and poems about her region and country. She even gave me recipies of her brown bread and scones. We felt like we were visiting family, a great aunt perhaps. The decoration of the house reminded me of my grand-mother's house in Canada. It was like a trip into the past. A great experience.

The B&B is located approx. 2km passed the town of Rosscarbery on the N71. Pass the town then a sign on the right side of the road directs to it. Turn right and keep on driving on the small road.

Rosscarbery is an ideal base for visits to Cork, Kinsale, Skibbereen, the Drombeg Cirle, Lough Hyne, Baltimore, Sherkin Island and other islands. The Warren, the local beach, is very nice, the water clean. Ideal for clidren. There's a good pub in town (Nolan's) with live music once a week and a couple of restaurants to fill up on local food and seafood.

If one wants european-size orthopedic beds, en-suite bathrooms, sat-tv and a/c, this isn't the place. But if one looks for authenticity, great irish hospitality and kindness, this is it. Plus, the Dalys have a cute little dog, Rover, who accompanied us on our strolls. Great fun for kids. Without a doubt, we will go back.
