“Very disappointing for the money”
Reviewed March 15, 2010

My husband and I spent a night here before Christmas on a trip around Tasmania. We had looked at the website and for $1000 a night expected this would be a real treat. We enjoy staying in special places and we're foody people...Tarraleah fell way short of the mark. The rate included breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lunch turned out to be a plate of pre-prepared sandwiches - there was no menu, no choice, no chef. The set dinner menu (the only option) was very ordinary - for $1000 we thought we might be getting something at least a little special. The thoroughly disappointing end to the stay was breakfast - basically on a par with what you'd expect at a comfort inn. Limited cold buffet with variety pack boxed cereals on offer, no menu and no chef. The waitress came to ask us if we wanted a hot breakfast and said we could choose from egg, bacon, tomato and mushroom. She then went off and cooked it herself...
The next night we stayed at the Priory Country Lodge in Bothwell which was an AMAZING experience and cost half what we paid to stay at Tarraleah...don't waste your money!!

Very comfortable, very stylish and mucho fun. Make sure you spend some time with the chef - outstanding. All of our group really enjoyed the weekend with a spectacular view and a wine list to die for. Very very good.

We enjoyed our one night stay here at christmas. The rooms are expansive, very well furnished and fitted out. And very clean. The furniture and interior design of the lodge is very sophisticated and obviously a lot of thought has gone into that.
It's not such a large lodge and not all the rooms have great views (but still pleasant). I thought the food was very good and appropriate for the price. Drinks and snacks are served in the lounge before guests are led to the restaurant. The range of drinks -whisky, wine, sake that they have is quite impressive. The guests all had a set course christmas dinner which was excellent. Granted, the breakfast was quite simple with not as many choices as you might get elsewhere at this price bracket. But the quality was fine. There is interesting reading material (that you would be unlikely to find elsewhere) and a lovely quiet ambience to relax in. The spa/bath house was bit ordinary for us (Japanese residents), and the water pressure in the shower of the bath house was poor leading to a slightly cold experience.

If your looking for a special time out holiday with that special someone or just an opprtunity to get away from it all in a remote spot away from the daily happenings in life then this is the location. A truely beatiful lodge and facilities passionatly restored in a art deco fashion with modern facilities included. The accomodation is equally supported by great staff in Nicky, Wes and Jo who make for a very pleasant, attentive and hospitable existance with every meal produced by Chef to a exceptional executive standard. For anyone to comment less then you are just not staying at the lodge for the right reasons for it is a non hassile do as you please with what is availble existance not a commercial style resort where patrons expect you to be at your beck and call.

We stay in many hotel around the world and some great lodges in Australia and New Zealand.
This is not one of them!!
With 3 inexperienced staff.
Its run like a school with a reclusive chef.....
Cocktails 18.30 Dinner 19.00 finish around 20.30 so that the remaining 2 staff can go. The chef has wll gone by 20.30.....
Onsite 24 hours butler is not correct. On site means in the village not the building.
When an emergency arose and the guest could contact no one the phone just rang out and there was no one in the building...no one. Thats a fact. Then told next morning `you dont look ill`` No real sympathy or offer of help.
Rooms were not cleaned properly and often waste bins etc were not emptied.

Running out of basic foods and only offering a choice for meals when it is clear that the chefs choice is based on a limited amount of provisions.

The buffet in the morning is the same everyday and very basic.
The real conversation in the evening was on how a school became a lodge with guests......
The spa was locked up when we tried to use it...etc etc

This was a three day indulgence and although it rained we had plenty to do. Ar deo style indulgence with delightful staff, Nicky and young Wezz. Rich red colurs and plenty of tactile experiences - and a very funny hotel guide. Highlight was probably the food although a number of the other guests raved about the spirit collection - the best bit was the pre dinner drinks and the free wine they presented mid meal. Big rooms and delighful artwork although dissapointingly not for sale. We were pleased we had a car to explore the rest of the area. Overall very romantic and thanks to my gorgeous partner jus the right medicine....

First time review prompted by some appaling behaviour from BRITISH GUESTS!

Firstly the hotel - beautiful view, expensive, fantastic rooms and a very very good wine list. Highlights were the young and keen staff, amazing bathrooms which really are quite gorgeous and some very well priced wines - although you have to search throught the list as it is not in price order. No hesitation reccomending this place if you want some quiet time in the lap of well served luxury. Given the A$ this is quite an indulgence.

Second, the guests! Maybe we were unlucky but on night three we had post dinner drinks with a drunk couple from the UK who proceeded to tell us that they 'hogtied' every hotel and always got a good discount on check out. The scam goes like this, something small is picked out (in this case it was no green olives only black) and complained about. The next morning, something big is brought up ("food poisoniong'") and the threat made 'give us a discount or we will complain to the Tourist Police or similar and write to tripadvisor". The hotel is 'hogtied' and they get a discount - "as we know it is not worth the hotel taking a chance". Unbelievable and simply not fair on the young staff - and from middle aged Brits!

How often does this happen I do not know but these people were a disgrace - and in a nice hotel.
