“felt like home”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

We stayed in Cetona last week for 8 nights and dined at L'Osteria del Merlo 3 nights. We went there the first night and nothing else compared to Merlo and all 5 of us looked forward to going back there again and again. The food was so fresh. I liked the menu. Not overwhelming with selections. Loved the Pici with the tomato/garlic sauce. I will make this at home. The antipasto of cod carpacio, fennel and blook orange segments burst in your mouth with freshness. And the chocolate lava cake with pear sauce - yummy. Most of all the service was so friendly and we felt so comfortable - just like home. A special thanks to our wonderful servers - Daniel and Stefano and to the 'exceptional, exquisite chef' Lisa. Bravo, Grazie Mille. Gerardette Iovino

“Bravi ! Bravi ! Bravi !”
Reviewed January 27, 2012

I've been dining here regularly for the past 5 years...and have never ever been disappointed. Located at the base of a circular 16th century tower right off the piazza, Merlo is a "typical" Tuscan osteria in many respects--small and intimate with terracotta floors, soaring arched ceilings, all the staff related to one another. Lovely in every way. But, after years of finding pici al ragu on every menu, in every season, it was a delightful shock to arrive at this "typical" restaurant and find traditional items re-created with subtle creativity and seasonal sensitivity. The chef is a young, well-trained woman and the restaurant is most ably run by her charming companion. I am happy...and proud...to be a regular patron of this delicious and adorable establishment !!

“poor service”
Reviewed October 24, 2011

There are only 3 restaurants in Cetona. this one is the worst. The food was average. The only thing everybody liked was a side dish called a spinach flan. The service was terrible. They were not very busy the night we visited but 2 of our goup of 4 had finished their forst course before the other 2 were even served. Mushroom pasta lacked mushrooms, pice amatriciana lacked spice and pasta with wild boar ragu was dry and sent back. The setting in an old tower in the town wall was nice, though.

The family had an incredible meal in the charming town of Cetona. We all agreed the pici with ragu was fabulous. The restaurant setting was particularly interesting, the floor of tower. You must have the wild boar.

“Just great, great, great”
Reviewed September 8, 2011

This is a great restaurant and I find it incredibly hard to understand why it is not in the top 3 spots. The food is simple but incredible, menu limited but varied enough, service impeccable, period.

We ate here because the bar in the main piazza recommended it as the best restaurant in town. He was right. It is in a small tower with about 10 tables outside and 10 inside. We ate a delicious plate of french cheeses with sweet mustards, then a plate with lightly grilled tomatoes and sliced burrata di mozzarella with oil and oregano, then a plate of ravioli and a plate or roasted rabbit. Desert was a chocolate cake - cuore di cioccolato some red wine and then a sweet dessert wine.

All wonderful. Really.
