“A perfect 10 - A second honeymoon!”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

Jeannie and I stayed in the cottage:
- Peace, quiet, a cocoon of greenery, all kinds of space, plus a 2nd room for our "stuff"
- Looks over the ocean, plus a huge bath hot-tub hidden in the foliage a dozen steps downhill
- Is surrounded by trees and bountiful flower and vegetable gardens, on a hillside
- Two excellent bikes, plus with fun places to ride right from our cottage
- Our fun sociable hosts, Maureen and Angus, provided yummy meals
- Two delightful restaurants located within a 15 minutes drive
- Good internet, plus a dining table that serves as a computer station
- Angus is a fisherman; fishing just before high tide was super fun
- A private path winding five minutes down through the trees to a pleasant coffee shop

Enjoy,
Paul and Jeannie Queneau, married 47 years, Golden, Colorado

We stayed at Heron's Rest in late December and had a lovely time. The house is in a fantastic location which has views over the bay and beaches. Only a short stroll down to the town where they have a number of local shops.

Angus and Maureen (and Mammi) were very accommodating and friendly. They had a great deal of knowledge of the place which undoubtedly made our stay more enjoyable. It also pointed us in the direction of some great eateries (try the old school house or Mussell Inn - fantastic atmosphere and food). And we really enjoyed some of the walks that they recommended.

We would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to see the Collingwood area.

My original choice was full for my first night in Collingwood hence booking at Herons.

It's up the hill but that gives you a bit of a view, and there's an access track/walkway to short cut down into town rather than taking the long way on the sealed roads.

The guest rooms is I guess what you'd call a cottage (I can't think of what else to call it) at the edge of the property, reasonably private, and with a bit of a deck and view. There is a twin room and a double bed in the main room.

The cottage is well stocked with various bits and pieces be it the bathroom, kitchenette, books on the shelf, and several biscuits in a tin next to the tea and coffee. There is a TV although to be honest you can only really watch it for any length of time in comfort if you are on the double bed, and I hadn't paid for that bed.

I made the mistake of letting night fall without familiarising myself with the location of light switches so there was a bit of fumbling around to get some light other than the TV!

Breakfast is in the owners house and you get a great view out over the back yard and Golden Bay. I took some photos from the yard afterward.

At $90 for a single bed + breakfast I'm very happy, probably the cheapest self contained option in town.

A final thought - finding it can be a bit tricky. The sign at the end of the sealed road seems to be part of the number 21 letter box and says to keep left. I kept left and quickly ended up in the car park area of number 21, which turns out not to be Herons Rest. So you actually need to veer right to go past that carpark/house, _then_ keep left.

My partner and I recently spent one night at the Heron's Rest after doing the Farewell Spit tour. The accommodation was clean, comfortable and private. The outside bath under the trees was a real treat. Maureen was a lovely hostess with a great sense of humour (sadly we missed out on meeting Angus!) We will definitely need to return and stay longer, and will highly recommend to friends. Just a short walk from Collingwood but so quiet and peaceful.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Heron's Rest, Collingwood, Golden Bay and would highly recommend both Collingwood and Heron's Rest as an ideal spot to explore Golden Bay. Angus and Maureen made us extremely welcome and even before our arrival helped us with advice and a booking for the Cape Farewell Lighthouse Trip. The accommodation is self contained and private and has lovely views over the inlet and bay. The cottage is original 'retro" and is spotlessly clean, with lovely linen and towels etc and we had a generous and delicious breakfast provisions delivered each day. We ended up eating in as my husband had caught lots of salmon at the salmon farm so we didn't sample the local hotel for dinner.

Room Tip: The cottage does sleep 4 but we would have hated to have been more than 2 people as our large overse...

Heron's Rest is the perfect place if you are looking for a peaceful spot to get away from it all and unwind. We stayed for 2 nights and had a wonderful stay. Details below:

Location: Located in Collingwood, walking distance to Collingwood's tavern, restaurant, and main street. There is a walking path from the property that brings you right to the centre. The cabin is literally located in the trees with a view of the sea. When we first arrived Angus was a huge help in mapping out all the area walks, activities and restaurants. We fully intended on getting going straight away but were taken aback by the hundreds of singing birds that live on or near the property. It was great to just sit on the sunny deck listen to the birdsong.

Room: fully equipped with everything you could need. It includes a queen bed in the main area and two single beds in the back room. The small kitchen is perfect for the traveller and coffee (as well as yummy cookies) were included. There is a private outdoor soaker bathtub for guest use and I enjoyed a nice hot bubble bath with a bunch of birds tweeting around me!

Hosts: Angus and Maureen are lovely and we were very happy to have met them and had the opportunity to share in conversation. Booking was problem free and I even ended up messing up my dates and they were very accomodating. Angus also does some very nice pottery and I had a hard time deciding which piece to take home with me.

Overall: if you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing getaway (off the 'beaten' tourist track) then I highly recommend staying here!

We had a truly relaxing stay in the beautiful cottage, so quiet and peaceful surrounded by trees and close to the beach. Angus was the perfect host and his home made breakfasts are unbelievable. His knowledge and advice on what to do and see in the area was a great bonus, we did some amazing walks that we would have otherwise missed. thank you for giving us a place that enabled us to get rid of all the stress.
