First and foremost, the best part of this B&B / Homestay is the hospitality by Maureen and Angus. They are wonderful hosts and sure made this a pleasurable experience. They have a great view of the bay and a beautiful property. This is THE place to stay if you are heading to Farewell Spit.

We stayed here having read everyone else's review on here. As described Maureen was a wonderful host and it turns out we may know the same people on the other side of the planet. My wife and I were invited to join her for evening drinks and she was a very warm, kind and friendly hostess. Angus was away which was a shame as it turns out we are from the same town. We stayed in the garden shed which has its own balcony and views of the bay. The room itself I would describe as "nice and cosy", you feel like you're staying in someone else's bedroom with all the reading material and magazines for your perusal. This clutter creates a home from home experience rather than a clinically clean feel you get in most motels.
Excellent.

Stayed here on our way back from Farewell Spit and Wharariki Beach. We arrived in Collingwood in the dark and, after seeking directions, found our way up the hill to Angus and Maureen's house. This is very definitely a 'homestay' and we were welcomed in like old friends.
My wife and I were in the garden hut - well it's a wooden structure in the garden anyway - which was very comfortable: a large room with a double bed and a shower-room off. It was warm and clean with all mod cons so no complaints.
Our companions had a double room in the main house which they reported as very comfortable.
In the morning we discovered that the approach to the hut was actually a verandah deck and there was a good view out across the Tasman Sea from the Heron's Rest's elevated position.
At breakfast we sat at the table in the house with our hosts and had a 'help yourself' type breakfast while they told us of their globetrotting adventures and we shared ours. In it all we discovered that we actually had friends in common! It is actually a really small world.

It Feels like I'm coming home (away from home) Sometimes you get the opportunity to discover fabulous places................. Sometimes you get the change to meet extraordinary people.................... We were extremely lucky to experienced both. Heron's Rest is a wonderful place in the Golden Bay. Maureen & Angus welcomed us with open arms, and made us feel part of the family. From the moment that we met, we knew that this stay was a special one. You guy's were one of our highlights while visiting New Zealand. The BBQ at The Naked Possum on Friday night was fantastic. (say hallo to Jocelyn & Grant) Always nice to come as a stranger and leave as a friend. Thanks for having us and, I'm pretty sure, till the next. Helma & Co (from the lowlands) Deurne - Netherlands

We really enjoyed our brief, 2 night stay with Angus at Herons rest....his wife was away for a few days and so we didnt get to meet her. Clearly Angus is the ultimate host..a warm welcome and our room was perfectly situated to view the Harbour of Collingwood...Generous continental breakfasts and a Muesli recipe that I had to have..and indeed many others before me! Angus was thoughtful and interesting to talk to...we shared Fish and Chips one night and met by chance at the Naked Possum Cafe and went for a short walk...Must dos in Collingwood that Im sure Angus will advise on...
Farewell Spit Tours, Choclate Factory, Naked Possum Cafe and nearby bush trek. Thanks Angus for a grat stay and making us feel so welcome...Paul and Barbara, Paihia, Northland NZ
