“Stunning in every way!”
Reviewed May 30, 2012

WOW! Yes, it's a tad remote and out of the way but if you want the most luxurious accommodations, the best scenery, the friendliest hosts and the most spectacular, private walking trek you could ever imagine, this is your place!

Admittedly, this would normally be beyond our budget but we had a "connection" that made it affordable and at the present time, with a daily rate of NZ $470, the price can't be beat.

Where do I start? The retreat is impeccable in every way. The family is doing all the work themselves - 9 years of backbreaking labor that is finally coming to fruition for the rest of us to enjoy and they truly have thought of everything. The family themselves are the most down to earth people you would ever want to meet and did their utmost to ensure every detail was taken care of during our stay. Perhaps the most spectacular part of the stay was the private trek that the family carved out of the trees that cascades down to Turtle Bay (beach). The walk to the Bay is nearly all downhill but it's like you're walking through Jurassic Park country without the dinosaurs. It almost felt artificial in many ways, with every step more and more beautiful down to the ocean where we ended up on a beach that very few have ever been on. It trumped anything Abel Tasman could bring and we felt truly blessed we were able to experience such a wonderful trek that is practically inaccessible to most. The best part is that the walk takes only about 45 minutes and if you're lucky, the hosts will pick you up at a neighboring beach and whisk you back up to the retreat in no time.

The time is now, before the price nearly doubles come September. Do yourself a favor and splurge on this one and stay two nights. You won't be disappointed.

where do i start? we stayed at Westhaven for two nights and this is one of the most spectacular places in New Zealand! the amazing rock formations, nakau palms and seascapes make it a great place for easy walks or sitting enjoying the view from the lodge. The lodge itself is a testament to the vision and hard work of the Stompe family - it is truely a labour of love and a wonderful environment to kick back and relax. Then the food - there is something special about European hospitality - it was very hard to say no to any of the wonderful food - esp Monika's apple cake (which we finished eating on our drive out!). If you are looking for a unique memorable experience then Westhaven is for you - we will definitely be back!

My husband and I were traveling with friends in New Zealand in Dec 2011 and had the honor of being the first official guests! We have traveled all over the world and this was truly our most favorite place to stay. The hosts are just an amazing and special family and they truly make this whole experience spectacular! We were there for just a few days but we have made a pact that we must get back there some day!
If you have the chance to go this area of New Zealand, a stay at Westhave is a must!

This is the most amazing place! Location and hosts are second to none we had a lovely break, accommodation is unlike anything we have seen, a true labour of love and something owners can be extremely proud of. Meals were fabulous and scenery is incredible! The website does not do Westhaven justice

The Westhaven area is the most beautiful place in New Zealand. The Lodge is gigantic. I really like the construction inside. The rooms are luxury and cozy at the same time, even the floor is stunning. The lodge is a real hideaway, so close to the nature. You can relax and take a time off, use the Spa, or go for a nice walk. 5 Points for the nicest Lodge I´ve ever been.
