WOW! Yes, it's a tad remote and out of the way but if you want the most luxurious accommodations, the best scenery, the friendliest hosts and the most spectacular, private walking trek you could ever imagine, this is your place!
Admittedly, this would normally be beyond our budget but we had a "connection" that made it affordable and at the present time, with a daily rate of NZ $470, the price can't be beat.
Where do I start? The retreat is impeccable in every way. The family is doing all the work themselves - 9 years of backbreaking labor that is finally coming to fruition for the rest of us to enjoy and they truly have thought of everything. The family themselves are the most down to earth people you would ever want to meet and did their utmost to ensure every detail was taken care of during our stay. Perhaps the most spectacular part of the stay was the private trek that the family carved out of the trees that cascades down to Turtle Bay (beach). The walk to the Bay is nearly all downhill but it's like you're walking through Jurassic Park country without the dinosaurs. It almost felt artificial in many ways, with every step more and more beautiful down to the ocean where we ended up on a beach that very few have ever been on. It trumped anything Abel Tasman could bring and we felt truly blessed we were able to experience such a wonderful trek that is practically inaccessible to most. The best part is that the walk takes only about 45 minutes and if you're lucky, the hosts will pick you up at a neighboring beach and whisk you back up to the retreat in no time.
The time is now, before the price nearly doubles come September. Do yourself a favor and splurge on this one and stay two nights. You won't be disappointed.
