“Great motel”
Reviewed August 30, 2012

We recently had the pleasure of a night at Collinwood Motel, Not actually in the motel as we were in a camper van, but there are excellent facilities in the motel parking area, It was very clean and had a lovely view over the estuary. Collingwood itself is a charming place and very near Wharariki Beach and Farewell spit, would recommend this place.

My wife and I travelled to Golden Bay when we were back in NZ from the UK. I love photography and had always wanted to visit Farewell Spit. We chose Collingwood Park and could not have been happier. The owners (Ann and Alan I think) were so friendly and helpful. Ann even organised our spots on the trip to the Spit for us when I rang up to book our room.

We had a lovely room. It was very comfortable, had a great little kitchenette and was quite probably the cleanest room I've ever stayed in! The facilities are excellent and we even got some washing done.

Collingwood is a pretty quiet, sleepy sort of a town, but is perfect for access to the Spit and another beautiful spot called Wharariki Beach (sp?). I'd recommend it to anyone who loves photography, especially birds and nature.

Also, if you love boutique beer and interesting food then you can't miss the Mussell Inn, which is just up the road.

We visited in February and had a wonderful peaceful stay here. Our room was clean and well equipped and it was useful to have laundry facilties. Our hosts were very helpful and friendly.
We liked to village and the fantastic chocolate shop and it was very convenient for local exploration of this beautiful and remote area.

The motel is OK, close to everything in town (its a small town!) and what you would expect from an average Kiwi motel.
BUT I was charged NZ$25.00 to check my emails via Wifi, which is the biggest rip so far in New Zealand, So if you stay here don't even think of using any wifi devices unless you have a very deep wallet.

We travelled to Golden Bay at the top of the South Island for some relaxation and to visit Farewell Spit. We found Collingwood Park Motel which had great street appeal. The owners Ann and Alan are terrific hosts and their attention to detail was appreciated.

The rooms were spotlessly clean and had been recently upgraded with a new kitchen. The room met all of our needs for our short, but comfortable stay in Collingwood. Being located in the centre of the small village, we found ourselves in easy access to both the beach (about 100 metres) and Farewell Spit Eco Tours office (across the street). With the motel broadband internet and great new laundry facilities, Ann and Alan are constantly thinking of their guests' needs.

There are a couple of good restaurants worth a visit and they are The Mussel Inn and The Naked Possum. The Mussel Inn was particularly good and a favourite in this region. Our trip to Farewell Spit was delightful with numerous varieties of bird life and sun bathing seals on the beach. The ride along the beach for 30kms is unique.

Many thanks Ann and Alan and we hope to return again one day.

We had an amazing stay here. This was the beginning of our vacation and could not have asked for more. The rooms were very spacious, had a small kitchen that included all the utensils, cookware, and a small refrigerator. we enjoyed the charm of this very small town. If you are looking to slow down and enjoy the scenery, this is a great place.

The motel had a full house & we did not notice any noise intrusion. The owner was vey accommodating and helpful. Had great recommendations for place to go & eat. We would absolutely stay here again :)

We stayed here because we could not find anything else available in other areas of Golden Bay. The owners are nice and helpful and the room was very clean, though it did smell strongly of bug spray when we arrived. The motel was built in the 70's and has had some updates but could use more. In particular the walls between rooms are very thin. We could clearly hear a spoken conversation next door and could clearly tell the other guests were watching Robin Williams. The shower sprayed water in quite a few directions other than what we wanted. It also has soap dispensers mounted on the walls instead of little soaps and shampoo which I don't like.

Collingwood the place is very basic food options are limited and basic and the beach there is good for walking but not somewhere you would play in the water.

I see this as the sort of place you might stay for a night if you were doing the track or the spit tour. Between the noise between rooms, and the fact that with two young kids we felt we had to constantly keep them quiet, we cut our visit short and stayed near Nelson instead which gave us better quality and value accommodation and more to do.
