My wife and I took a drive and happened upon the Royal Oak by chance, we stopped because it's rural location, it was your typical old unspoilt English pub from the outside and it ha a garden. It did not disappoint the menu was varied and what we had was excellent (ribs and a burger). Great choice of beers on tap, especially if you a real ale fan!
The garden was the best bit a view over rolling fields of corn towards the Oak Woods, we could have stayed for hours, listening to swallows and the other birds.
By the way dog owners out there, the pub loves our furry friends!
A great experience not like what was previously written!!!

This pub had decent (ish) write ups online, but it didn't measure up. We sat in the back annex, which was slightly shabby - a couple of strategically placed cushions at the end of the bench seat, covered up a great patch of wall where the pink paint had peeled off - and the food was fairly mediocre. Reasonable oatcakes and fish cakes for the missus, but a hugely disappointing steak with peppercorn sauce for myself. The steak was a poor cut of meat, and the sauce one of the blandest I'd ever tasted. Might have stretched to an average '3' rating, cos the service was quite good, but the over inflated prices meant that a '2' was the best I could stretch to

met some old friends had a simple ham eggs and chips arrived late so made it easy for the chef but it was great proper ham eggs done to perfection and nice chips, no pressure to leave and i'm not local.

Last visited this pub nearly 2 years ago and was very impressed. High quality food and good service. Sadly things have changed. Now offers a fairly big semi-pretentious menu. Wife had the fish cakes - fine. I had the beef burger... which was sadly a firm tasteless pattie of dubious quality and grisly texture (? from a catering pack). You'd think a homemade pub burger would be one of the easier things to get right.

On the plus side staff were friendly and beer good. Plenty of tables free on a Saturday on BH weekend and nice outdoor space. But plenty of other pubs in the area so would aim to eat elsewhere next time. Lovely walk in bluebell-filled Staffhurst Woods after though.

You will only feel welcome in this pub if you are a local. Felt too uncomfortable to stay for any length of time. Nasty experience.
