“Great value for money in paradise - Swiss efficiency meets costa rican beauty”
Reviewed April 19, 2011

We've been to guacamay lodge twice now and love it. The second time we took 45 people back with us and got married there. It's owned by a Swiss brother and sister who are efficient and warm. You barely see them unless you need something and then there is always someone there to help you. The rooms are not luxurious but they are clean and have everything you need, including air conditioning. Gabriel, the main waiter in the restaurant, is very friendly and never makes a mistake on the bill. You pay for everything at the end so we were expecting some mistakes but he gets everything perfectly right. The restaurant is open air and looks over some trees to the pacific ocean. A short walk down the hill and you're on a deserted beach (plays junquillal). I'd recommend one of the four studio apartments as then you have a refrigerator and little kitchenette.
The atmosphere is one of complete relaxation. The pool is surrounded by lovely plants and flowers and there is a lovely mango tree next to the two bedroom villa. There is a volleyball court and a fabulous tennis court which is floodlit. I get the impression that Alice and Berni, the owners, are always looking for new tennis partners to play with. Menu in the restaurant is very interesting as there are some swiss items. The specials are particularly good. Our wedding dinner included steak and everyone commented on how perfectly they were cooked. At the end of the wedding after dancing on the dance floor Alice and Bernie were good sports about everyone ending up in the pool fully clothed. In summary it's quiet, relaxing, fun, beautiful and terrific value for money. We're hooked.

I recently returned from a solo 11 day trip to Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Since this was my first adventure to CR, my mission was to see as much of this part of the country as I could in a limited amount of time. While I stayed in four different hotels from the Lake Arenal region to the Pacific coast, the Guacamaya Lodge was my favorite as well as the least expensive. I can't say enough about the gracious hospitality of Swiss owners Alice and Berni as well as their friendly staff.
The duplex cabinas might be considered a bit small for some, but I found it perfect. After all, how much time does one really spend in the room when there is so much to do and see. I rarely turned on the AC as the large ceiling fan provided excellent circulation of the air along with the cooler evening breezes wafting through the screened windows.
The staff will happily arrange fishing excursions, horseback riding, golf, or any other available activity that might interest you. Even a very reasonably priced massage from a local masseuse who will come to your room.
On site, there is a volleyball pit, lovely pool and a beautiful open air restaurant with very good food and a great ocean view.
I'm happy to say that I met a few new friends and found a gem of a hotel.

Guacamaya lodge was friendly from beginning to end. We went deep sea fishing and had our dorado catch prepared several ways, scrumptious. We played bocchi ball and swam at the beach. We walked for 5 kilometers on the most beautiful beach and saw about 10 people. Horses were available but we didn't go riding, nor did we take advantage of the tennis courts. Every day was memorable, full and sunny. What a dream week with Alice and Bernie

We stayed at this hotel during the Green Season. This is a very good hotel if you want some seclusion. Playa Junquillal is a very, very sleepy beach community. There were never more than 4 others on the beach while I was there. The Guacamaya Lodge would be a fine place to stay if you want quiet afternoons by the pool or reading on your porch. There are tennis courts. Although the website advertised aerobics classes, there were none scheduled while I was visiting. Don't expect shops or restaurants or tourist attractions when you go to Junquillal. There was only a deli and a market open on the way into town.

The lodge is set on a hill, up a long driveway. The grounds are very open, and you can see the sea from the pool and lawn areas. The units are huge, with very tall ceilings. The AC worked well. The safe worked fine. The bungalows (two units to a building) seem fairly well soundproofed.

We were in Costa Rica March 4-11th, 2010 for a sunset wedding for our niece & her man and we were not dissappointed. We stayed at the Gucamaya Lodge, Bernie & Alice were very accommodating, the food was always good, the drinks cold, the rooms made up with - out any interruption to us. We were worried about no T.V. or radio in the rooms, but it was very relaxing, almost simple feeling not to have anything distracting. If your looking for a place to reconnect or just get away from everything, this is the place to go. The taxi driver Chris picked us up at the airport & got us back for our return flight with no problems at all. Thanks everyone at the Guacamaya Lodge for taking care of us & making our trip memorable !! Wade & Rhonda

I've been using Trip Advisor so much to plan another trip that it was gnawing on me that I never left a raving review of this wonderful place where I stayed three years ago. We stayed here to be close to Tamarindo. Once we got to Tamarindo, we left after about an hour to leave the spring break vibe and go back to our own private beach at Junquillal. The hotel is wonderful. Each "room" is its own little house. The bedroom was very spacious with a king sized bed. The grounds were gorgeous and very well maintained. At night I just stood there and stared at the stars- beautiful! The beach right by the hotel was equally beautiful- and it was empty! A private slice of heaven. The owners were very kind, the food was good, and I was amazed by the quality for the price. This was, by far, my favorite hotel in Costa Rica.
