We have just returned after DBB at hotel. Superb friendly service. Milk offered and taken to our room, and our bathroom had underfloor heating- both nice touches. Sherin and Kim, the owners, were always around and engaging in conversation. Lovely food. Warm fire. With nice walks nearby.

found this property by chance when looking for hotel in or around Keswick to stay in location ideal only 10 mins by car from Keswick bassenthwaite lake in view easy access if required from hotel rooms have modern features ie new bathroom good shower new wallpaper new owners are concentrating on improving bigger features before smaller things loads of ornaments and standalone individual decorations welcoming lounge bar and games room very quiet when we stayed out of season however a big returning party were expected the following weekend a lot of repeat visitors due to quality of hotel good quality three course dinner with different homemade bread and chefs recommendation on menu each night. breakfast plentiful also staff friendly dodd wood on doorstep nice walks one to summit provided worthwhile view at top of surrounding area. did not travel in opposite direction however only 16m from cockermouth and 25m from Carlisle. would certainly consider visiting again without a doubt

Room Tip: room 11 facing lake front view smallish on 2nd floor nice view though

We first came across Ravenstone when looking for somewhere to get lunch earlier in the year. We were so impressed with their helpfulness that we decided to book a short break with them. We weren't disappointed.

The staff are very friendly and the hotel has a lovely relaxed, informal atmosphere e.g. guests are encouraged to play the piano in the lounge, rather than the usual "Please do not touch" signs seen in some places.

Competent and accommodating restaurant. Good base for walking Northern Lakes with access from the door to the Skiddaw range and Bassenthwaite Lake.

The building was once a dowager house and still retains some original features like intricate fretwork to the sitting room and a huge mantle around the fireplace. The rooms are all well appointed and spotlessly clean. The bedrooms are a reasonable size and underfloor heating adds a luxury touch to the bathrooms. The staff are very pleasant except one young lady who may have been shy but did come over as rather surly. Food is the highest quality but here is where the fifth star is lost. The first evening the order was wrong , altered without an apology, and served as if we were at fault. Meals occasionaly were not hot, especially breakfast . This could have been rectified very easily by the plates being heated. There was also problems with six people being served together. Not a huge issue but a constant niggle.

Our return to Ravenstone Manor was everything we anticipated and more. The owners have updated and improved the rooms and been presented with several hotel awards. A well deserved testament to putting their hearts and souls into making it a wonderful place to stay. Thank you all a Ravenstone Manor

We think this must be a first - a restaurant or hotel with a dinner menu that offers exactly the same choice to diners on a gluten free menu as to diners with no dietary requirements. It was so unsual to be able to order different things and then swap mouthfuls (one of us has coeliacs' disease, the other does not) that we didn't even consider doing that until our second night! (But a word of warning, the same does not apply to the toast and sausages served at breakfast time, which are different.)

This was the first time in 21 years that my wife has come away from a hotel or restaurant after dining there twice without having been able to sample all of the desserts which she would have been able to try. (Usually it's a choice between creme brulee, perhaps ice cream or sorbet, and fruit salad, or even no choice at all but just a speciality coffee.) At Ravenstone Manor there is an abundance of choice!

The pizza bread we were given one evening as an accompaniment to the meal was exceptionally good and we very much enjoyed the venison and the chicken caesar salad. Our only critisicm would be that one night the gravy which accompanied roast beef and yorkshire pudding was a little bit salty - I think the chef's hand must have slipped - so don't season your food until you have tasted it! (You shouldn't anyway, of course, and fortunately i hadn't done.) However, all in all the food was very enjoyable.

The only reason I haven't given Ravenstone Manor five stars is because our room was very cosy - I think probably the smallest in the hotel, as we have stayed in other larger rooms there under the previous management. However, there was nothing wrong with it, although the jacuzzi shower is not for the fainthearted because the penalty for getting the controls wrong is being sprayed all over with jets of ice cold water!

Room Tip: If you want a larger room, perhaps you should ask for one with a bath. We were offered a room with...
