“Charming historic home in heart of Northern Lakes”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

Ravenstone Manor near Basenthwaite is a warm, welcoming hotel full of quirky nooks and crannies, unusual features and bags of Cumbrian character. Nestled near the foot of Skiddaw, it is surrounded by some of the most breath-taking scenery that the Lake District has to offer. As soon as we entered the hotel we were made to feel welcome by owners Tina, Adam, Cherin and Kim. Excellent service was their top priority and we very much appreciated the personal touch. Nothing was too much trouble for them - they even make a special effort to cater for anyone with food intolerances. We also loved our cosy room, the intimate wood-panelled feel of the place, its unusual features such as a snooker room and the beautiful grounds surrounding it. We felt as if we'd escaped from the rat race and entered a natural paradise. Our room was clean and modern with wonderful views of the fells and glimpses of the lake at Bassenthwaite. In the evening we had a delicious meal made by the hotel's chef. Again, the attention to detail and service were spot on. We also enjoyed chatting with the owners and other guests in the comfortable and impresive lounge which has a fireplace that is a replica of one at Greystoke Castle near Penrith. The building is steeped in history and we enjoyed hearing all about it from Kim, Tina, Cherin and Adam. The hotel is also very much their home but for one night we felt as if it was out home too.

Room Tip: Ask for a room looking towards the lake.

The most memorable thing about my visit to this hotel was the exceptionally warm welcome from the proprietors of the place who went out of their way to make you feel at home.

The public areas of the hotel are great with log fires, decent beer behind the bar and so on. It was nice curling up on a sofa in front of one of the fires with a good book!

The restaurant has an excellent menu although the execution wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped for (The turkey presented to me was very dry around the edges as if it had been kept under the "keep warm" lights for too long). Breakfast was top quality, though!

The rooms were clean although there were quite a few flies from the nearby woods. There's nothing you or the hotel can do about this apart from go round hunting before you turn in for the night! I was on the second floor, and I found the walls somewhat thin - I could easily hear snoring and talking from other rooms.

The location is absolutely wonderful!

For the price I paid (£50 including breakfast), this hotel exceeded expectations.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor.

Thank you, Paul, for your feedback. We are sorry that you were with us when the flies were a problem but appreciate your comments that it was beyond our control. Nonetheless we will try to be more aware of the possible problem in future. We have noted your comment about the turkey and have already taken steps to ensure that the food is perfect everytime. We really appreciate all the feedback because it allows us to improve and we are glad that we exceeded your expectations. Regards, Cherin and Kim

Having just returned from our second stay at the hotel I can honestly say this hotel is a little gem not to be missed. Our stay was for 2 nights for my Birthday. Upon arrival we were shown to our room and the staff had kindly arranged for flowers & Champagne (at my partners request) to be left in the room. The room had a magnificent view over the hills and was spotlessly clean. The food was exceptional (Breakfast & evening meal). The staff were very friendly and polite and nothing was too much trouble. One of the owners (Kim) took time to sit and chat with us over a drink in front of the log fire which I felt was a really nice touch. Nothing seemed like too much trouble. Having read back at the review dated 13th October 2012, I feel the comments are incredibly unfair and uncalled for. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE NOTE OF THE COMMENTS !!!! Granted, this hotel may not be to everyones taste but to verbally slate it on here is uncalled for. I will defo be returning to this hotel again and highly recommend to friends and family. Thanks you Ravenstone for making my Birthday so special :O) !!!!!

Absolutly fabulous hotel, staff very friendly. A thoroughly enjoyable stay!! The website does not do the hotel justice our room was outstanding!! Food was 5* (breakfast and evening meal). Games room with pool table, full size snooker table and table tennis table was lovely to be able to give you something to do in the evenings although enjoying a drink in the cozy bar with open fire was good too ;0).

Wow! What a great review. Thank you for the feedback about the website. It is one of the first projects we undertook when we bought the hotel a year ago but obviously it needs some fine tuning. Your comments about the food being 5-star is appreciated and when Chris, our Head Chef, reads such glowing comments about his food, he positively puffs up with pride! Keep an eye on the website for future deals and packages and also for additional improvements to the website itself. Hopefully we will see you in the very near future. Regards, Cherin and Kim

GREAT CHARACTER HOTEL - We were made most welcome as soon as we arrived from friendly owners and staff. Bedroom and ensuite were excellent with very king size bed and a view over lake towards Whinlatter fell!
Meal preparation and service was faultless with good choice including vegetarian, especially for breakfast. Recommend anyone to try this hotel and will be going again ourselves.

Room Tip: Go for room facing the lake!

We discovered this hotel through a KGB deal. From the time of booking right through until leaving the staff could not be more helpful. The hotel was very clean and we had a wonderful view from our room. The food was a set price with a menu to suit all tastes and was excellent quality. Breakfast was also excellent with the hot food cooked as required nothing was too much trouble. It is a great base whether you want to go walking or just enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Lake District.

It is great to have a review from our voucher guests, we deliberately chose to go with a voucher programme to introduce the hotel to an audience that would not normally know about us. Your comments about the food and the hotel are wonderful and we would like to thank you for taking the time to post such a positive review.

Arrived & was disappointed by the decor. Dull Dated & Drab. Room was a decent size with a nice view (of the fells) We updated to it as it advertised room with "Lake View" LAKE VIEW I DON'T THINK SO. Instead of "Were's Waldo" IT was were is the lake?????? It was a joke. I saw more water in the bottom of my water glass from the window. Bathroom dated not 100% clean & so tiny it was colstrophobic. Meals were a disgrace. My starter was a tiny oval DRY slice of bread, 2 asparagus spears laying across & a yellow bit of sauce that had been "BURNT BLACK" The asparagus spear COULD not be cut. It was awful. Furniture in room would not have been accepted by a charity shop. Yes! The people seemed nice but we were paying for a nice room & get-away for our anniversary. It was a terrible experience. I
I am very familar with the Lake District having stayed at The Beechfield, The Bell field, The Langdone Chase & other places. There prices should be those of a local B& B. All else is a joke!.

Dear Mrs W,

It is NOT unexpected to have received your comments. We are always open to feedback from our guests so that we can get better at what we do. In the short 11 months since taking over Ravenstone Manor, we have welcomed many guests into our home and have never been faced with such contempt. We are saddened and a bit embarrased for you, that you felt you had to take such an angry approach when leaving your feedback.

In truth, I knew, from the moment I welcomed you at the door, that there was nothing that I myself, my partners or my staff would be able to do to help you enjoy your visit to our home. It was clear from the very start that you simply did not like anything about Ravenstone Manor.

I can only apologise again, as I did when I walked you to your car, and reiterate that every traveller has their own tastes, and we can only repsct that.

On behalf of myself, my partners and the staff at Ravenstone Manor, we wish you many happy anniversaries and many happy travels in the future.

Warmest regards,
Cherin
