Best Western Plus Lake District, Keswick, Castle Inn Hotel
Ranked #5 of 5 Hotels in Bassenthwaite
Reviewed May 28, 2014

We spent the May weekend at this hotel and had a lovely time. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable, the bathroom was also a generous size with clean white towels. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast choices were good, the leisure facilities more than met our needs where we enjoyed a quiet swim. We also appreciated the 11am booking out time. Our only minor complaint would be the lack of atmosphere in the bar but overall a good experience and would definitely return if in the area.

Executive room well worth the extra - spacious, modern bathroom, but no bathrobes. Disappointed to get last minute offer via email just before I arrived offering free breakfast and dinner ... I booked in advance and paid more, without any meals. Indoor pool was good, food reasonable but staff a bit overwhelmed at times. Need more seating outside rather than just a few tables in the car park. Lovely location.

We stayed here for one night on the way to Centerparcs and wished we had stayed longer. The hotel staff couldn't do enough for us or our children. Our family room was HUGE! The beds were comfortable and there was a high quality bathroom with toiletries. They provided a travel cot in our room and there were plenty of other child facilities throughout the hotel. Our 2 year old daughter particularly liked the games room and the pitch and putt. The gardens are beautiful, we were fascinated with the thousands of frogspawn in the ponds. The food in the restaurant and the bar was also excellent. Great hotel and we will definitely be staying again!

We stayed here for 2 nights at a rate of £144 per night (advanced purchase B&B). Room was lovely and we enjoyed a great dinner in the restaurant each night. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Our only small grumble is that the hotel was extremely stingy with consumables in the room. On the first night/morning, we emptied the 1 small bottle of shampoo and the 1 small bottle of bath/shower gel and we also used the very small bar of soap. These were not replenished and so on the second night/morning we were left with just a small slither of soap. The drinks were also rationed and so we had sachets of hot chocolate on only one of our days and only one sachet of decaf. I have never come across a hotel of this rating which was so mean with consumables and, as our total bill for the room and food for 2 nights came to £498, I am disappointed that they couldn't be a little more generous with these items.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for your recent feedback. I am sorry about the toiletries and drinks, we do keep spares in the wardrobes and extra supplies at Reception, but we are really sorry that this was not better communicated. I will speak to the team to make sure that this is replenished more frequently and that it doesn't happen again.

We are glad that you enjoyed the rest of your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Best wishes

Stayed at Castle Inn Hotel, Bassenthwaite 5th to 10th May 2014 on B & B basis. Food in restaurant and bar quite expensive so ate out locally. Standard room was large and spotlessly clean as were all public areas and fitness centre. Cannot praise it highly enough and would definitely recommend it to others.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your recent review and I am really pleased that we exceeded all expectations.

I am sorry that you felt that the food was a little expensive the average main course in Lakers Bar is £12 and a three course meal in Ritsons Restaurant is £25 per person, we feel that these prices reflect the quality of food which is all homemade and where possible only using locally sourced ingredients.

Thank you again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Kind regards

Booked a couple of nights at short notice to get away from it all. It should have received top marks from me because executive room was clean, tidy and spacious, breakfast was nice with plenty of choice, wifi was good for most of the stay, swimming pool was good. But, whether it was because I was tired or the weather was not great, I did'nt feel inspired by the place. Evening meal on the pub side wasn't particularly of 4-star standard, although the prices were. Fire alarm went off early on the first morning when I was in the shower so I had to quickly put clothes on while wet and get out of there. A few minutes later the alarm stopped, there was clearly no fire, but nobody came to advise us of the situation and we eventually just went back in. Later after asking at reception we were told it was an alarm set off in the kitchen from cooking breakfast. Bassenthwaite Lake just down the road was nice for a walk, saw salmon in the water from the bridge and plenty of bird life. The hotel is remote, about 15 minutes by car to the nearest shops in Cockermouth or Keswick which was fine for us but may not be for others. An osprey viewing centre is nearby, although the walk is steep. A drive around Derwent Water and the Honiston Pass was lovely.

Dear Guest

I am sorry that we did not meet all of your expectations. We did have a false alarm caused by somebody drying their hair. My apologies that nobody spoke to you to advise you of the situation. We do have full procedures in place to deal with these situations and staff are fully trained. I will re-emphasise your concern to the team.

I do hope that you will try us again and if you would like to contact me direct I will personally take care of your booking.

Best wishes
