Myself, my wife and two teenage children have just returned from a 2 night stay here. The room, food and service were excellent. However, due to the pool policy which is applied to children under 18 years of age -the overwhelming impression was that our children were subjected to direct and unacceptable age discrimination during the summer school holidays. When children were eventually allowed into the pool at 4.30pm , some adult users regarded them like creatures from another planet. This policy could perhaps be regarded by customers with children as divisive and cruel during the summer school holidays and appears to be a tool which some adult users (non - residents) of the pool are more than willing to wield so as to discretely intimidate the children of paying residents. I was expecting the Kiddy Catcher to appear at any moment as the atmosphere was so oppressive and unfriendly towards perfectly well behaved children. The pool should not be advertised unless it is available to everyone all the time - especially children during the summer holidays. The brochure indicates that children are welcome - however the pool policy may have the unintended potential to promote negative behaviour towards children by some of the less scrupulous and less mature adult users of the spa and hotel. Our children were so upset by their experience in the spa that I would ask that the hotel does not merely respond to this message by attempting to justify or re-affirm their pool policy - as this would simply be adding insult to genuine injury.I only hope that this message serves to highlight a significant underlying issue to the hotel so that it can consider some modification of its pool policy before a negative culture is permitted to develop in one of its primary areas of business. Finally , if you intend to visit this excellent hotel - or just its superb spa facilities - please take some time to reflect on the FACT that you yourself were once a child and an adolescent. Please have the maturity and grace to allow the children to enjoy what remains of their all too short childhood.

Room Tip: This is an excellent hotel - I don't believe any room will disappoint.

We stayed for one night hotel beautiful, service excellent, spa fantastic. We opted to upgrade for an additional £20 each to the restaurant as the brasserie was too noisy with children running round and seemed to have no one in charge we walked in and straight back out and opted to upgrade to the restaurant which was quiet, well serviced and an excellent menu. I would advise anyone staying here to do the same as soon as you check in as the upgrade is worth every penny. Food was excellent as was the service breakfast the following morning was fresh local produce and served with a smile.

This hotel has has the whole hospitality experience sorted.
Check in was smooth with a free sherry. Our rooms were delightful; lovely furnishings with plenty of extras, such a tv in the bathroom. My mother had reserved a single room but was upgraded to a superior double close to our room. We were lucky to have a room with a balcony which made for a pleasant cup of tea in the sun. The views from many rooms are great and if you can't see from your room, the eating and lounge areas provide them.
Every member of staff is exceptionally polite and professional. Nothing is too much trouble, so much so that not one stood out, but each individual would in many another hotel.
Afternoon tea was top notch. (I always eat cheese scones and these were the best I've had!)
The spa and pool facilities were brilliant - pool is good for swimming lengths whilst the small pool is great for kids. The outdoor jacuzzi makes relaxation easy and is picturesque.
We ate in the formal dining room- the menu contained a wide variety of options, and had a great atmosphere.
Breakfast is another treat. This was my second time here and I will be back!

Set in unbelievable scenery this Hotel is all about stately mansion living. The building itself is beautiful, as is the grounds with forest walks just yards away from the rear of the house.

The view from the rear of the building takes in step hills on either side of Bassenthwaite Lake - it's stunning. The room was luxurious as was the en-suite.

The swimming pool and Spa is top quality and there's a large outdoor Jacuzzi and sun lounging area.

Dinner in the Dining room is formal with a strict dress code, but in the nearby Brasserie it's `dress how you like'. The food is excellent as is the service .

It's expensive for a one night stay, but we got a Groupon deal for half the price, it was great to see how the other half live.

After a god swim in the spa we were hungry and popped into the Brasserie for some well earned food. Marion and Sunshine are always there to tend to your needs, they make you feel so welcome.

The homemade burger was scrummy with the blue cheese topping, the hubby ate the salmon with couscous he said it was rather delicious - I wouldn't know I didn't get to taste it!

How lovely to have good food at a good price with great service - please keep up the good work

We have had another lovely experience at Armathwaite Hall, the last time we were there was twenty one years ago, I was so delighted to be back. The service here is exceptional, you are treated so well by all the staff, they make you feel really special. We had a lovely room, no.143 which is on the ground floor with a small patio area, my husband and I sat with a lovely bottle of sparkly wine and enjoyed the sunshine, a perfect afternoon! We booked for our evening meal too, which was fantastic quality, the waiting staff take care of you from the minute you go for a pre dinner drink in the drawing room, right through to the end of your meal, they will take your drinks and bring coffees through to the comfortable lounge area to finish your evening, cant fault this hotel at all, loved it.

I would like to apologise to the staff of Armathwaite Hall, for the delay in writing this well overdue shower of well deserved praise; for my wife and I’s silver wedding anniversary stay at the end of May.
Having travelled from Eastern Scotland, on arrival, we were greeted by Danni with a very warm and friendly welcome, together with a sherry; whilst a very efficient porter, who had whisked our cases up to the second floor and into our super room so very quickly. So quick in fact, I didn’t get an opportunity to tip him.
Our Club room had recently been refurbished was on the side of the hotel, with its own small balcony with seats giving wonderful views to Bassenthwaite lake to the front and over splendid countryside to the rear. The room was large, with huge big bed with superb fresh crisp white sheets and duvet with a quality cover at the foot of the bed. Quality white towelling gowns were sitting on the bed neatly folded into small bundles. Storage was a large oak wardrobe with ample capacity for our five night stay. A conveniently placed LCD flat screen TV was wall mounted facing the bed. Finally two comfortable wing chairs were placed either side of a small circular table. Behind them was the access door to the balcony.
The bathroom took us by surprise, with a well specified and equipped fully tiled grooming centre. The towels were very soft and thick, always a good sign. The bath had centrally mounted taps and plug release. Above the bath were two wall mounted bi-fold glazed doors, which pull around you, once standing in the shower within the bath. Unusual and works well, however if you’re cuddly like me, then you might struggle to keep the doors together when moving around inside it. If you like to soak in a bath, then the wall mounted TV with remote may be of interest. Don’t forget to ask for a non-slip bath mat.
Pre dinner drinks were served in a very comfortable lounge with a spectacular view of the lake. So very restful, I could have stayed there forever. As long as someone kept the G&T coming. Dinner was taken in the Lake View restaurant. The food was of a high standard but the temperature of it on the plates could have been hotter, perhaps improving the dining experience. Service at times seemed a little slow but they were rather busy, as I understand they were full and hosting conference dining guests too from a Rolls Royce and Bentley motor club. On our actual anniversary, we sat at the table at the centre of the window, giving the best view of the lake. Antonio the maitre d' and waiting staff was so very kind and even the chef prepared a wonderful happy anniversary desert. It was absolutely delightful, and a wonderful gesture.
On two evenings we tried their Courtyard Brasserie and found the two gentlemen of staff, swift and efficient with the same quality of food on hot plates, delicious.
Breakfast was a leisurely affair, served in the Lake View restaurant. Apart from very pale thin toast on most mornings, it was another successful experience, with a wide range to suit all tastes.
Everyone at Armathwaite, including each member of staff, was warm and welcoming, friendly and generous with their attention to detail. We loved it and are looking forward to a pampered winter return.
If you’re looking for an old country hotel, full of charm and character with old fashioned high standards, Armathwaite Hall should be experienced; as it’s a credit to the industry.
