Had a nice pint in here after a long walk. It was Boxing Day and the pub was fairly busy. Old beams and a roaring fire. Nice friendly bar staff. Had an average meal - but as it was Christmas, the Chef may have been off

Found this on our way back to Threkeld one sunny August day - lovely pub with the added attraction of customers with friendly dogs - worth seeking out for the ales

I live nearby and used to love this place. Always busy, tables difficult to get and fresh, honest food. Things changed a couple of years ago when it changed hands and we stopped going. I'd heard that it had changed hands again so decided to try it for a family Sunday treat.
We arrived to find the dining area empty (7pm) and the lights off. As was the heating. Zero degrees outside and although we had jackets on it was too cold to eat in the dining area. We moved into the bar area to sit next to the fire. As soon as we sat down the landlord switched off all the lights in the dining area! We ordered from a very dreary menu and were served very dreary food. I hope the people that are running the Sun take some advice and can turn the place around. As things stand the only positive from our experience was the bright and cheery waitress who unfortunately stood out from an otherwise lifeless pub.

Lisa and Paul at the Sun Inn have made a splendid contribution to life in the village since they arrived in the summer. Their hospitality has made the pub once again a meeting place for locals as well as visitors – something of equal value to them as licensees and to village people in the lean, mean winter months. And their hospitality is shared by an excellent team of good-humoured and efficient bar and waiting staff.

It’s a good place to eat, too, as the menu has been carefully planned to offer good-value standards like steak and chips or steak and ale pie and a good range of specials like spicy stuffed aubergine, four-fowl roast and sea bass with an olive and tomato sauce. Starters are good, too. The scallops with chorizo and the moules marinieres are delicious. Lisa, a vegetarian who likes good food, is creative in the soup department. There’s always a special on the go, such as butternut squash and sweet potato, butternut squash and horseradish or even a beetroot you may not have thought possible – and all of this good food at pub prices, not restaurant hype and overcharge. Where else can you expect a regular Monday night choice of four curries plus a superb special like the Thai fish curry
for £7, including rice and trimmings?

All this adds up to a real plus for Bassenthwaite. Thank you, Paul and Lisa and the Sun Inn team.
