“Disappointment in Paradise”
Reviewed March 27, 2006

We just returned from four days at the Paradisus, and we will not return. There are not many resorts as beautiful as this one, but there are many areas in need of improvement. The climate is wonderful, and the landscaping is well designed. Rooms are spacious and very clean. The pools offer everything one wants, but the beach is one area that does not encourage visitors. Housekeeping needs improvement. Often they do not get to your room until very late in the afternoon or early evening. There were no washcloths or hand towels after the first day. Repeated requests for these items were ignored. Room service was terrible; service was slow, trays were not picked up for days, and the food was poor. The restaurants were not open in the evening, and you were told there were no available reservations when you called. The only meals available were buffets in two restaurants. Food that was to be hot was barely warm, and the buffet tables were not refilled very often. You need to get there early to get any food. Casino is small, and you might want to forget the gift shop. The spa was excellent, and the staff professional. Perhaps Paradisus has a lot of problems because it is only a few years old.

We recently returned from a week at the all inclusive resort, Paradisus, in Puerto Rico. It was very very disappointing. Although the staff wanted to be helpful and were friendly, they were horribly understaffed and untrained. The hotel boasts of 5 fine dining restaurants, yet 2 of them were low grade buffets. The outdoor buffet was unsanitary, due to birds eating in the food and bird droppings. The "reservation" restaurants were poorly run, understaffed, relying on low quality meats and ingredients.
We opted to upgrade to "Royal Service" which provides a "butler" and a private pool. The pool was lovely, but the butler was NO WHERE to be found. The food in general, was horrible and the room service was extremely slow and sometimes did not show up. Every day required arguing and fighting for what we had already paid for (and we were paying over $700.00/day). Upon arrival we were informed that no reservations were available ANY night before 10 pm.
The beach was rocky with a lot of vegetation growing on the floor of the ocean and it was not good for swimming. The only plus was that the property was nice and the Royal Service ocean front accomodation was well appointed. It is rated a 4 star property and it is not even close.

Before we went to Paradisus,I read all the negative reviews, so I booked a backup room in San Juan. The day I arrived, I cancelled the backup reservation. The place is beautiful and relaxing. I never write reviews but I feel I have to refute the negative ones I had read.
All the Carribean Islands are a little laid back as far as service and the way they do things. But overall this place is worth it. It is a great place if you just want to lay by the pool, relax, and have a few drinks.
Enjoy the Paradisus.

We arrived at this hotel to meet with friends for a long weekend. After an easy flight from JFK we had to wait for over 35 minutes for the hotel bus to pick us up and bring us to the hotel.
We arrived only to stand in a line for 20 minutes before anyone told us since we were 'Royal Sevice Members' we were to go to another area.
We booked an Ocean front room. Well, all we saw of the ocean was the roof top of another building.
We were told prior to getting to the hotel that our reservation had been honored, mind you we paid up front. So they move us to another room garden view on the 1st floor, dark and smelling very moldy. NOT ACCEPTABLE. We are then brought to another room garden view with 2 small beds, not acceptable for $100.00 a day. Then brought to yet another room 2nd floor garden view, bearly acceptable.....The room we requested and paid for would not be ready until the next day.??????????
With this special 'ROYAL' service at an additional $100 each we were to get a butler? and have some of our clothes cleaned if necessary. Neither was provided.
The food was less than adequate. It appears there is one main kitchen. If you like to each the same food all the time....go for it. The Benihana type restaurant was just a show with everything dumped onto a plate. The bird droppings often found in the Mirador Grill usually found on the plates and tables did not help.....disgusting and certainly not acceptable in the light of the bird epidemic.
The royal service pool was pleasant and very cozy, the staff was very wonderful. The casino there is a bit sketchy.....many of the machines were not functioning properly and the atmosphere was not pleasant....small is not even close.
Where was Management?
Seems they had a major problem...They were ABSENT.

Think twice before spending the money.....we will never return even if it were FREE. There is much better out there.

We booked our stay through ORBITZ, but we called the hotel to guarantee a late arrival and was given a confirmation number. When we arrived at the Paradisus, we were told they overbooked by 18 rooms and we could stay at the El Conquistador 3 nights FREE. We were upset to say the least after traveling all that while, but what could we do. We got to the El Conquistador around 9:00PM. The next morning I called my credit card company to cancell the payment to ORBITZ. We had a loverly time at the El COnquistador by the way. When we got back home, we called ORBITZ only to be told the El Conquistador billed the Paradisus and they inturn billed ORBITZ which means we have to pay. Needless to say we are in arbitration regarding this bill. I am sure they had 18 other unhappy lodgers on their hands also. How could they totally ruin all these peoples hard earned vacations and just disregard what was told them? What a way to do business. Needless to say we will never return. It much to expensive a place to be run so poorly.

My husband and I had a very restful and relaxing vacation. It was a company trip so we were with a large group and had some of our meals planned ahead of time. We had no problems getting reservations the other nights. I am pregnant and a picky eater and did not go hungry. There were plenty of healthy choices and the room service was wonderful during the day. The late night service took two hours. After reading previous reviews I was tempted to pass on the trip and stay home, but I am glad I gave it a chance. The staff was friendly and the spa was wonderful! I didn't get a single bug bite. We brought a candle for the room and that took care of the slight odor. I did get a pretty nasty sunburn, so bring your sunblock and a good book and relax. The weather was perfect the entire time.

We just got back from a week at the Paradisus and loved it! Definitely go for the Royal Service - we asked for scented pillows and ended up with over 16 on the bed. We were able to get restaurant reservations for all 7 nights at exactly the time we wanted 6:30, 7:30 no problem. Food was excellent. Try the tuna or snapper. Desserts are super. Room service was quick and hot. Pool towels were not a problem - we just walked down to the royal pool and helped ourselves each morning - never had to even show our cards. The casino is small but does have pennies, nickels and quarters. Terrible vp selecetion and pays, but I won $600 on two different nights playing Eagle Rock. Sign up for the players card - they give you a tee shirt and $30 in match play coupons.
Get a car and go on one of the catamarans to Icarcos - we went snorkeling twice, once with Spread Eagle/Capt. Tito and once with Island Flyer (High speed catamaran) with Capt. Jim.- had a nice day both times.
Only complaint - and this is really a stretch - they had a daily fee to park your rental car (there are devious ways around this)
Royal Service Rooms in Building 17 are closest to everything - top floors have cathedral ceilings and more privacy.
NO bugs, no musty smell - would go back in a flash.
