“Service Poor/Food Bad”
Reviewed February 18, 2006

My friend and I just returned from this beautiful hotel, unfortunately the beauty of the resort is damaged by the poor service and terrible food. We lived on bread and fruit all the while loving the weather and the grounds which they are constanly working on at all hours including around the spa at 10 am.
They also had tend to drive the work carts with trailers dragging behind them around the grounds at the crack of dawn.
Would never stay there again.

We, too, recently returned from a group conference at the Paradisus and couldn't have asked for a better resort for this conference! We traveled with a group of 60 and, to my knowledge, there were NO major complaints - we were fairly evenly divided between Royal and Regular service, too. We have been on 8 or more trips with this same group and, to my knowledge, this is the first time there were no requests for room changes and no complaints.

We had room service several times during our stay and the food came 10 - 15 minutes sooner than expected, every time; we had a Super Bowl party at our place and Roberto, from banquet services, couldn't have been more attentive; Angel and Anthony, our butlers, were fabulous and even came to check if we needed anything on 2 or more occasions and Juan Carlo, who handled our farewell dinner, was equally attentive and concientious of our every need. Elizabeth, st the excursion desk, was great too! We had arranged for a small group to take the night kayak trip to the Bioluminescent Bay and it gradually turned into a group of 40 - which could have turned into a big problem or a disappointment for some - but because of her expertise, it didn't! It was one of the most amazing side trips I have ever been on!

My husband and I came to the Paradisus for a site visit in 2004 and found everyone to be very accomodating then, too.

I have read many reviews of different resorts on this forum and it seems the disgruntled are much more likely to take the time to write a review than the satisfied are. What a shame we are fast to criticize and very slow to praise!

Just returned from a group program. Overall, we had a great time..Rooms were excellent, service friendly, pools beautiful. Food was average and can be improved for a 5 star resort.

The staff was delightful and all of us (60 people) had a great experience.

I read previous reviews on trip advisor just before our departure, I was nervous. I strongly agree with the people who said it was a very nice resort, but food was average, couldn't get into restaurants that required reservations, and we started the first day we arrived and only made it to one in a week. Apparently they are understaffed in Restaurants. I think they have to cut cost somewhere and it's cheaper for you to go to one of their Buffet restaurants. We had Royal Service, but that didn't really get us any further along. We spoke with managers, they appologized said they would work on it but no one (four different people) every really followed thru. We wanted a good meal and decided to go outside the resort to a restaurant another guest had told us about. The resort provided transportation to and from Restaurant, it was about 20 min. from resort. The restaurant was La Parilla, highly reccommend. Open air (nothing fancy, but not a total dive) locals restaurant, very good food, good presentation, very friendly staff, a little slow but enjoyable. We enjoyed ourselves, if we ever went back to Puerto Rico we would go there. We had our four kids with us (ages 5-17). They were very accomodating to the kids.

Paradisus-Very nice resort, but wouldn't return because of Food issues (poor management).

Went to paridisus to get away from the cold.

Poor service, average food, rooms ok.

Would recommend staying in the number 1500 bungalows or the number 100's bungalows. Everything else is an extremely long walk to get to pools and dining. I'm not averse to walking; however, you have to plan your evening around a long hike to and from your room.

Bamboo dining was decent but the hostess acted as if we were disrupting them by asking for seating for 4 (no reservations). If we weren't so hungry we would have requested management. The Hibachi tables were empty!

Bartenders not very helpful and spent most of the evening staring at their shoes.

I would not return or recommend this resort to any family members or friends.

$100 cab fare to get downtown; when you are on this resort you are stuck.

Evening strolls were infested by gnats/blackflies- I am still scratching 1 week post stay

We stayed at the Paradisus hotel the week of January 22nd, and found it to be a very rewarding and relaxing experience. The hotel staff was accomdating and friendly, and the service was good throughout. We were thoroughly happy with the hotel. The horizontal layout of the hotel is a bit sprawling, but taxi service is provided to vacationers' bungaloes, and this service is more than adequate as waiting is kept to a minimum. The food is excellent across the board, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, and the selections are varied. There are several different types of restaurants for discriminating tastes, including oriental, italian, and continental. We preferred the buffets, and the Italian restaurant was particularly good. The pool is vast and winding, and interestingly contoured. The scenery at poolside along the ocean is a thing of beauty, and comfortably laid out. The only problem we had is that we found that we had quite a few mosquitoe bites when we arrived home, so we would recommend protection. As for tours, we enjoyed the rainforest and its myriad types of birds, insects, vegetation and plants. However, our favorite jaunt was to the fortress at El Morro fronting the town of Od San Juan. The fortress was constructed in the mid 1500s to repel invaders, and you can almost feel the battles while walking through this massive, multi-storied structure. And don't forget to take a walk through Old San Juan, which has character and diversity, as well as good buys for interested shoppers. All in all, we had a great time. If you like a relaxed and relatively tranquil vacation, the Paradisus is ideal, as it is tucked away on a remote peninsula, away from the maddening crowd.

This is a beautiful resort and much effort is obvious in maintaining the grounds, pool area, beach etc. Do not, however, let the high cost of the resort lead you to believe you'll get outstanding service. Most of the staff seemed well trained to respond to complaints, and were very courteous. When their mouths moved, rehearsed words came out and sounded smooth, but a sincere desire to help was absent. One buffet hostess at the Caribbean in particular, was rude by nature. She loved telling you to go to another restaurant as they were closed.(I don't think they have set hours to be open) We were forewarned about the system for dinner reservations, to the extent that we made several calls before our arrival to secure a nice place to eat. We were assured by Maria Garcia that there would be no problem and we just needed to make reservations after we checked in. Still being doubtful, I requested from Maria, specific night reservations for the different restaurants, giving her flexibility by not specifying a time. When we checked in, the reservation desk was closed. The next morning we went to the desk again to find Maria had succeeded in one nights dinner reservations for our 7 night stay. It was for 9:30 pm. OK, yes, two buffets are available without reservations, so you will not starve to death. However, our experience in both buffet locations, (for food and service) was on a par with our local $8.99 buffet dinners. We were "successful" on the 2nd day with the help of our travel agent and secured a reservation at the Romantico Restaurant for 10:00pm. We were seated at 11:00 pm, and were served the last course, our dessert, finally at 1:00 AM. At 1:05 am, all the lights were turned on full bright.. It was the staff’s message to us: “ok we’re thru with you...get out” Unfortunately, this trip was with my best customers and the resort did not give me the results I wanted or expected.
