“loved the hotel”
Reviewed March 19, 2005

This hotel is very beautiful- the rooms are nice, the beach, the pools, and the restaurants. The beach is right off the pools which is convenient and there are plenty of chairs. Service is great anywhere in the hotel. I would make reservations at the restaurants before you go because they fill up. We have 14 in our group and we liked the Grill Room Restaurant the best. I would stay in the ocean view. pool view, or the ocean front rooms only. The mountain view is pretty but I preferred the ocean. The casino is small and packed every night. The clothing shop is fair. The beds are so comfortable. Overall, the food is pretty good. We had a large group and it was the perfect place to stay- not too large. I heard the EL Conquistor hotel down the street is very nice but the beach is not right off the pool and the hotel is spread out. Everyone in our group really liked the Westin. One day, we went snokeling on Captain Mingo's boat- very dissappointing. The water was too rough and we didn't see much!

My mom and I just returned from 4 wonderful days at the Westin. After reading some of the reviews on this site, I wondered if I should take some food with me... but, we were both extremely pleased with the food at all of the restaurants, and we tried them all but Cactus Jack's. Yes, it's pricey, you knew that before you went. We especially enjoyed lunch at the outside restaurant near the pool. The food was wonderful.
The rooms were great. The beds were AMAZING. I miss that bed!!
We were there with a group, and the accomodations were excellent. From the moment we got off the plane until they made us leave! I cant express enough how great everything was. I would highly recommend the Westin!!!

Stayed there twice over last six months because it was in close proximity to my aunt who is in a nursing home. Room rates are what I believe expensive. About $200 per night the first time and $400 per night the second time. (went with my wife and got continental breakfast, a small buffet dinner and a top floor room included)
Both time I complained to Westin about minor service items. They included a room safe that didn't work, room info book not up to date, continuously broken elevator between lobby and garage as well as other small problems. Normally this would not bother me but at the price per night it did.
Now what's nice. The location is very good, the grounds are great especially if you play golf. The first time I used some of the resturants and they were fine. The second time we only puchased one lunch by the pool and it was okay.
Bottom line if it were not for the convienenced regarding my aunt I'd stay somewhere else.

We enjoyed the Westin Rio Mar and would probably stay there again. Nice beach, pool, casino, but ... impossible to get a lounge chair by the pool during busy weeks (we were there Christmas week). People pay hotel employees to "reserve" lounges. When we went down to the pool at 9 a.m., every lounge had a towel on it. Something needs to be done about this system. We ended up on the beach every day instead since we couldn't get near the pool.

The food is average, casino is small, but nice. There should be more things for teens to do at night ... many of them found their way into the casino (illegally).

But, our rooms were very comfortable, the staff was very helpful and overall we had a very relaxing week (once we stopped looking for pool lounge chairs!).

Just returned w/ 2 young kids (4 & 20 months). Generally the resort is a great vacation. the grounds, pool are beautiful. The bad parts are: the service is very erratic; some people are nice & helpful, some are extremely unfriendly & make no effort to help. THe kids camp is good, but the staff seemed sort of bored & there was no effort to get more kids to sign up. the resort is full of kids, so we felt comfortable. The food is standard, but very kid-friendly. The beach is large & very beautiful. The room (junior suite) was very large, but horribly maintained. The thermostat didn't work & never really was fixed despite pleas & the front door had chipped paint like a college dorm room. The ride from/to the airport isn't too bad & we had no trouble checking in.

The pool was great, great water slide which my son (4) loved. The kiddie pool is also great-w/ sprinklers & loads of toys they lend you.

My wife and I returned from a quick three night jaunt to the Westin. We came away impressed, and if we're to return to Puerto Rico, it's likely we'd stay here again.

THE GOOD: The property and hotel are lovely. The public spaces are all tastefully done and attractive - a large lobby area has a number of cool seating areas and a bar and overlooks some of the restaurants on the level below. The casino is relatively small but very lively.

We were happy with the rooms, which are standard Westin, and therefore a touch nicer than the average Caribbean room in resorts of similar caliber - they're nice sized, have an outdoor balcony with a table and chairs, and have all the fixings you'd expect from a Westin - including a couch, handsome desk and the heavenly bed. The bathrooms are really very nice, with a great shower and separate room for the toilet.

The outoor areas are nicely done as well, with landscaping that's very pretty but not overdone. There are essentially two large pool sections - one right next to an outdoor bar/lunch restaurant and the (annoying) music that comes with it, and another further away that's much quieter. The pools are very nice, with plentiful chairs bordering it.

The exterior of the hotel was attractive as well - it looks like the upscale resort you're paying for.

By far, the reason to come here is the beach, which, compared to the beaches we've been to in San Juan, is the nicest we've seen in Puerto Rico. As it's 45 minutes from San Juan, the hotel is in a relatively secluded area and its beach stretches for a mile or so - and it's beautiful. Puerto Rican beaches aren't white sand, but the water is beautiful, there are plenty of chairs, and it's deep enough that you can easily find a spot without people right on top of you. Great, great beach (complete with wait service, should you want it).

Finally, there are a number of bars to choose from located in different parts of the resort - plenty of different places to sit an enjoy a drink or cigar.

THE BAD: The hotel is something of a trek from the airport: 35 min - 1 hour, depending on traffic - which could be longer if you're taking one of the shuttles included in your package. We chose instead to take a taxi for the speed of it, and that costs roughly $65 each way with tip. (If you do this, make sure you ask your travel professional to take out the airport transfers from your package - which cost extra $$.) The road there looks more like you're on the outskirts of Miami than somewhere Caribbean.

The service is hit or miss. It ranged from very friendly and accommodating to "I'm annoyed that you're asking this of me". Overall, more good service than bad, though.

Finally, once you're there, it's likely you're staying there. Other than being adjacent to El Yunque (the rainforest), there isn't anything worth seeing or doing in the immediate area. Other restaurants are a cab ride away minimum, and there aren't many options.

THE UGLY: As you've no doubt read by now, the restaurants do leave something to be desired. Don't get me wrong - none of the food is inedible or scary, and some of it is pretty good stuff. But more often than not, it's completely generic and expectedly very pricey. Worst of all, none of the seafood at the resort is locally caught - all of it is flown in, we learned, and therefore more expensive and not as fresh as you'd like.

There are a number of restaurants to choose from - which is nice - and they're located all around the sprawling resort (some of which you'll access by a trolley). But the biggest disappointment was Palio - their "destination" Italian restaurant. The room itself is really fun and attractive, but it pretty much ends there. The tomatoes in my wife's $16 pomodoro were incredibly mealy - to the point where we actually sent it back. We ordered room service one night (from their full service Marbella restaurant) and the hamburger was of surprisingly poor quality. The lunch menu is pretty spartan, with no good salads and sandwiches that were so-so at best.

We did enjoy Ajili Mojili - a Puerto Rican restaurant that is an outpost of the original in San Juan. We've eaten at the original, which is better than this watered down version, but it was still the best and most interesting meal we had while there.

There is also a Tex-Mex and an Asian restaurant there, but we didn't try either. The $20 lo mein wasn't calling us.

A hint: either load up on their adequate buffet breakfast ($18) in the Marbella restaurant and skip the marginal lunch options, or hit the David's Cookies adjacent to the casino, which has hot breakfast sandwiches, yogurts, muffins, coffee, etc. for a lot less.

If we'd stayed longer than three nights, the restaurants would have been more of a problem.

OVERALL: Due to the lack of interesting food at the resort and the inaccessibility of other places, a seven night stay can get a little long. But the good in this resort outweighs the bad, in our opinion, and if you're looking for a very nice resort with a great beach in Puerto Rico, you'll be hard pressed to find a nicer spot than the Westin.

I very nice property. Don't be alarmed by - reviews. Service can be a bit slow if your from a USA city area but in PR this is the way. No need to rush your on vacation. Rooms are fine but not as nice as most Westin hotels in USA. The staff is very friendly my cousin has lived in Westin Rio Mar 3 months out of the year for the last 6 years & he is from NYC & happy with things. Rent a car from airport or at Avis in hotel. Food is not great so leave off to a place like Brass Cactus down Rt 3. Not perfect but very nice.
